Sadly missing most of Taito's best efforts.

Some interesting games on there, but I'm afraid the Sega Genesis Collection has set new standards for future retro compilations.

Not only was New Zealand Story incredibly average, but the map of New Zealand in it looked as though it was copied from Captain Cook’s dairy. I have a friend who swears this game is great. But he also loves Wonderboy... I guess he's just got a thing for piss-easy platformers.

Or maybe he's got fond memories of being able to make his money go further up at the local fish 'n' chip shop. One credit on Wonderboy would guaranteed a novice player a solid half-hour of snail jumping. Where as true classics like Rygar really seperated the 12 year-olds from the 15 year-olds.

I can't believe Eurogamer has accepted ad money from the world's leading anti-semite Mel Gibson...

Don't worry all the good Taito titles will eventually make it onto XBLA PSN and VC and charge us individually for each retro gem.

And itamae has got me intrigued with his comment.

What's in Sega Genesis Collection?

"Is he a member of Klu Klux clan?"

The KU Klux Klan is also noted for its anti-catholicism, so I doubt it.

The Megadrive/Genesis collection has a great lineup of games and all, but apparently the emulation is severely dodgy (especially when you compare the Sonic games to those on Mega Collection). I bet it's bloody Digital Eclipse again.

I see.

Well, I wouldn't know.

But anti-semitism is a pretty strong charge. I don't follow the showbiz industry, so any evidence / substantiation?

Huh? That the first I hear of that. The games look and play absolutely fine to me, and Sonic in special seems to be absolutely identical to the Game Gear version I played yonks ago. Care to elaborate?

Well, I haven't had first hand experience myself, but...

Video is mostly respectably emulated, but Digital Eclipse's usual lack of any support for these games' native resolution has once again left this writer in the lurch. They did include an option for progressive-scan, though, which will marginally help these games' appearance on HD sets. As they are, in 480i, they look swimmy, indefinite, and flickery.

Sound emulation doesn't fare much better. The music seems to be streamed off the disc to save on CPU usage, but this has caused oddities like the music in Sonic 1 and 2 not speeding up when it should. Plus, there are glitches here and there with music starting or stopping in the wrong place. Sound effects sound fine in some games and dreadful in others, but there's a general cast of inaccuracy over the whole package that will grate on you if you've played any of these games recently.

I see, cheers. Mmh, to be honest I did notice one or two music dropouts while playing Phantasy Star II, but thought it was caused by the game, not the emulation. I can't comment on the graphics of the PS2 version, but the games look excellent on the PSP's screen. I guess I'm not anal enough to notice the flaws. ;-)

I received this game in the post today and although i've only briefly flicked through it even at £5.99 it's a rip off.

It's amazing how your brain tricks you into believing the games of your youth were so great and when you come face to face with them again it's such a huge disappointment.

Quite surprising this got a 7 considering the price for the collection and the lack of Triple A titles. Can't believe they left off Rainbow Islands and Bubble Bobble, I doubt it'll sell half as many without those.
