Tabula Rasa Interview

PC Interview by Rob Fahey

9 August, 2007

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

Call us cynics, but when a game designer takes the podium to lambast all the other games in his chosen genre for being stale, stagnant and un-innovative, our first response tends to be somewhat uncharitable. Eurogamer writers stand around in front of mirrors perfecting the Roger Moore arched eyebrow and the innocently purred "so, what are you doing about this?" - so yes, call us cynics. We'll shake your hand.

Richard Garriott, though... Well, we'll grudgingly accept that if anyone is going to go off on one about MMORPG design being stale and rooted in the past, he's got more of a right than most. After all, he practically invented the genre with Ultima Online - or at the very least, popularised it after a few other stabs in the dark from titles like Meridian 59. If anyone's got a right to slag off the Sistine Chapel, it's probably Michelangelo.

Besides, Garriott doesn't pull his punches - and we appreciate a man with un-pulled punches. We appreciate a man who dismisses every MMORPG on the market at present as "manic level grinding, keep up with the Joneses, turn-based whack-a-mole" (owch!) without then rushing to tell us that was off the record.

Finally, we really appreciate a man who isn't just moaning for the sake of it. Garriott doesn't have an axe to grind; he just thinks he's got a better game. He may even be right.

Blank Slate

'Tabula Rasa' Screenshot 1

The interface is very stripped-down by MMO standards - the clearest reflection possible of Garriott's ambition to get away from the conventions of the genre.

Tabula Rasa is Richard Garriott's return to the MMORPG space, ten years after practically creating it with Ultima Online. When he talks about the changes that have taken place in the market since his last title, he's certainly impressed by the commercial success. He's full of praise for WoW, up to a point, describing it as a "wonderful product" and noting Blizzard's talent for "polish" - but on a very basic level, Garriott almost seems disappointed at how little the genre has evolved since UO.

"Ultima Online was frankly a stab in the dark," he explained. "There were no giant, successful, massively multiplayer games prior to Ultima Online. So the features we put into the game were basically first attempts at what might work in an MMO space."

"Similarly, EverQuest, which was developed at about the same time - it really had quite a few differences to Ultima Online, but those two games basically established the original feature set that you now see in most MMOs."

"What I'm critical of, in our industry, is that over the last ten years most MMOs have included those exact same features... I'm a critic of is the MMO genre, the space - all the games we've produced," he says bluntly.

"Those fundamentals are serviceable, clearly - I mean, the genre has grown immensely, in spite of the fact that I think that the type of features which we offer players have not evolved very much."

"That's really the idea with Tabula Rasa. In fact, the whole name of the game - Tabula Rasa, blank slate. The whole point is to wipe the slate clean."

'Tabula Rasa' Screenshot 6

Big stompy robots and shiny power-armour, oh my! It's the tech fetishist's dream.

Okay, so that's the election pitch - but so far, so rhetoric. Wiping the slate clean is all very well, but what does Richard Garriott plan on building in its place?

"From a fiction standpoint, the one thing we didn't want to do was medieval fantasy," he says. "We've all been doing medieval fantasy for 25 years, and almost every MMO is medieval fantasy - so that was the one thing we weren't going to do."

Instead, Tabula Rasa is a near-future science fiction story, set in a universe where the earth has been attacked by a nasty alien race called the Bane. The survivors of the attack fight back against the aggressors, using technology nabbed from an ancient and apparently extinct race called the Eloh. At release, the game will feature two planets on the front-line of the battle; future expansions will, presumably, add additional planets.

The science fiction setting, of course, isn't entirely innovative - games like Anarchy Online got there first, after all. However, given that Garriott is best known for the medieval fantasy of the Ultima series, it's an indication of how far he's prepared to depart from his "comfort zone" with the new game. In light of the changes to the MMO game formula he proceeds to show us, the sci-fi setting even starts to feel like one of the more minor departures.

Back to Basics

'Tabula Rasa' Screenshot 2

It's no graphical stunner, but some great monster designs definitely help that along - and the amount of action on-screen at once gets very impressive at points.

Aside from moving away from medieval fantasy, Garriott points at three key areas in which Tabula Rasa will be departing from previous MMOs. Firstly, the game promises what he describes as a "fast-paced, tactical combat system". Secondly, it will all take place across dynamic battlefields, with computer controlled characters actively involved in fighting for territory and bases being captured and lost as the game ebbs and flows.

Finally, he believes that the team has crafted a storytelling system vastly more complex than anything previously seen in a massively multiplayer title.

Rather than simply reading the mission text and then doing exactly what it wants, the game will ask players to make moral, ethical judgements about how they carry out their missions - or whether they carry them out at all. Those choices can have major ramifications further down the line in the game, a system which is occasionally found in offline RPGs but has rarely strayed online.

While that's certainly a welcome twist to the genre, our interest is piqued most of all by the claim that Tabula Rasa will deliver fast-paced, tactical combat - something which seems far out of reach for existing MMO titles. Garriott is withering in his criticism of games which fail to engage the players in the action before them, focusing instead on a "safe" turn-based system.

'Tabula Rasa' Screenshot 7

This is why we can't have nice things.

"Once you highlight an opponent, you know that they're going to sit there in a turn-based way attacking you," he says. "You could put a black cloth over the top two-thirds of the screen, and watch only your text window and your shortcut bar - and play the rest of the game until the combat is done."

"In our mind, that's an example of a world not being set up correctly. I'm not really immersed in the battle that's going on, because I'm not paying attention to what's going on. All I'm watching is the numbers."

So despite all this talk of reinventing the genre the game is still based around stat-based combat, grinding mobs, levelling up, character classes, hit points, etc.

So basically pretty damn similar to every other MMORPG ever except 'fast-paced' and with a sci-fi theme. Woot.

Not sure what people were expecting, of course it still has the MMORPG basics - how else would you want to tie the community to the game for months or years?

The completely different setting to 99,9% of the MMORPG market and a more action-based combat as well as a "bot" AI that's a lot more active than it is usually in this genre sound sufficiently different to me.

Neocron did most of this 5 years ago, delivering action fps combat in a mmo setting. Admittedly its faded now and full of problems, but he should not claim to be re-inventing the wheel as much as he is.

Psychonauts MMORPG anyone?

Run around other people's heads collecting figments, then build levels in your own head for other people to come play in...

Now that'd be innovative.

I think it looks cool. Future warfare wouldn't involve a bunch of clownsuited eejits flying round on silver jetpacks. And I like the idea of being able to 'branch' character development. Still wondering about the combat mechanism though.

I'm going to keep an open mind, something that would appear to be a rare commodity around here...

What's interesting is that Garriott has had very little interaction with the TR community to the point where people were wondering if it was just him being paid to have his name on the box to shift copies, and yet here he is giving interviews. Hmm.

Anyways fun game, but is there any depth? I heard the latest update had improved things.

The art direction (not to mention the setting) appeals more to me than WoW's, some of the shots are excellent. Garriott is a good designer and it's nice to see that he tries to include moral choices in the gameplay. Also, real-time combat elements in an MMORPG are a welcome change.

I really regret that I won't be unable to try the closed beta due to a holiday trip though...

Hmph, i thought it sounded good. I like the idea of being able to create character copies. I quit wow from having to deal with shit like waiting to hours to find an appropriate class to do an instance with. With TB you could just switch over :P

Then again it could all end up being poorly implemented of course.

Just signed up for the beta. As long as everything runs smoothly, it should be a successful game.

If their client update system is anything to go by I'm going to fucking hate the game- 6 hours to get to 75% only to have them disconnect me, reconnect and the pissy fucking thing is somehow back at 39% and has another 6 hour estimated time. Assuming their c64 servers don't disconnect me again.

No - we are complaining about not being able to get into the beta in the first place BECAUSE of huge stalling downloads/patches...

Which brings me to my patching process which ended with an "abnormal server disconnection" (or sth. like that) at over 50% (which has taken me half the day to download at a really crappy speed) - now it seems I have to download the patch again. Wonderful!

Garriott in no way created the MMO genre, and it's a fuckload older than ten years too. The only thing that Ultima Online did was popularise the concept of putting a graphical shell around things. Before that, we used to play our 'MMOs' in text.

Critical bunch, aren't you?

1) Say what you will about the history of MMOGs, Garriot designed the first wide-reaching and popular MMOG.

2) This sounds like its sufficiently different to your average MMORPG. From what I've read, it almost sounds like a diablo x mmorpg x fps. I'll see further once I get the beta this weekend.

3) Nothing will ever, ever be completely innovative. It will always have its roots in other things. Simply speaking;
Boardgame -> MUD-> Mmorpg.
And in each case it built on that which came before. All MMORPGs will build on lessons learnt in previous attempts. WoW did it. Even UO did it. TR will as well.

Its all about combining things in different mixtures to try and create something that feels "new", rather than re-hashing that which came before and putting it in a pretty box. (Eg, majority of game sequels).

Not to say re-hashing/sequels can't make for great games, but the truly innovative and trend-setting games are almost always new IP.

Risky though - it can always flop. The flipside is that if it takes off, you are guaranteed profitable sequels/expansions etc.

How about an enemy without a stupidly appropriate name in English? As if an alien conqueror would name themselves "The Bane" (unless they had a really really bad PR department). And no similarity to The Flood or The Combine, huh? At least the Strogg sounded like a plate of yummy cream based stew.

Wonder if Hitler and Goebbels sat about discussing spooky sounding names for the Luftwaffe over a plate of saurkraut. "Der Shroud?" "Nein. Lame. What about Das Swarm?"

If I was an evil alien conqueror, I'd name my race of uber mutoid cyborgs The Fluffy Bunny Wabbits from Planet Kyoote Ki'Tun. No-one would see *us* coming.

v v good point with Third Reich, but even scarier is that they WERE totally into progaganda - why do you think the Schutzstaffeln had skulls and crossbones as their insignia? To look like pirates?

Second point - any alien will know that we are easily misled by appearances and visuals. Perhaps the best bit of MArs Attacks is when the evil Martians are running around frying people and shouting "GAK GAK", and out of the universal translator machine the words "we want to be friends" come out. You have ot ask yourself - is the machine not working, or are they actually saying that?

I digress...

Even if it played almost the same to WoW thank god its not another fantasy setting. Absolutely sick to death of gandalf wannabes. Nothing like a big rifle.

Being able to create clones of your character at certain points is the best thing here. Imagine in WoW if you get to level 30, you can begin a new class at that same stage. No more effing crossroads woot! :)

Would describing the beta as 'laughably unexceptional' break the NDA? It'd want to very quickly become a very different game to even approach Garriott's modest ambitions.
