SWTOR is "biggest MMO project ever" News

MMO PC News by Ellie Gibson

18 August, 2009

LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez has declared Star Wars: The Old Republic is "the biggest MMO project ever developed".

He was joined on stage at EA's gamescom conference by BioWare's Ray Muzyka, who confirmed the game will feature "more than 40 novels' worth of content".

Rodriguez went on to announce that LucasArts is "completely localising the entire game in German and French". In other words, "Every character will have his, her or its own German, French or English voice."

To emphasise the point, they then played the SWTOR trailer from E3 again - but this time with a voiceover in German. Ja.

A release date for SWTOR has yet to be announced.

Is this unusual? I'd assumed all games of this type were translated into all the major european languages.

*desperately trying not to be cynical about anything Star Wars*

Lucas: "Hey, guys! Look how much we're throwing at this baby, it's going to be the best thing ever!"

World: "Yeah, right...that's what you said about Phantom Menace, remember?"

Damn. Still want this to be awesome, though.

Hopefully this means there will be British, French and German servers, not European servers.

@PlugMonkey
It's a fully voiced MMO, so yeah it's unusual or at least a massive job.

Still a bit dicey, could really pay off mind. The cynic in me is winning though.

Far too much focus on the voicing, what about the gameplay, the variation of quests and the endgame? That's far more important.

If it's kill 10 droids by pressing hotkey 1 and 2, then I couldn't give a **** if it had Eliza Dushku reading the quest text in her lingerie, I still wouldn't be interested.

Yep, they focused on gloating over herculean voiceover many times now. I still can't shake the feeling that in case of an MMO this money (and there's quite a lot of it I'm sure) would be better spent on developing interesting gameplay and content.

I'm looking forward to this game but I can't say that I'm not worried about the level of interest the various lines quests will be able to bring. If I look back at games like KOTOR and Mass Effect, I've really indulged their main story lines, yet at the same time been fairly bored with the majority of their side quests.

After seeing the walktrough, I'm sold. Not so much for smuggler, but either Jedi/Sith or BH.
