Relive the glory days for less than six quid.

The legendary Super Mario Kart will be available to buy from Wii's Virtual Console shop this Friday, 2nd April - which is appropriately named Good Friday.

This cherished SNES game will carry the usual price-tag of 800 Wii Points (Ł5.60/€8).

Super Mario Kart founded a racing series that has sold millions and millions of units in numerous guises - Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Kart Double-Dash, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii - over the years.

The idea was simple: put characters from the Mario games in Mario-themed vehicles, arm them with Mario-themed weaponry and have them race around Mario-themed worlds. Donkey Kong is obviously the best, though.

Mario was the best - good handling and overall speed, and most importantly couldn't get shunted by the heavier characters.

I wrote in a forum back in November we'd either get the game Christmas day and if not then Good Friday as a joke on how long we sometimes have to wait here for the big virtual console games from their US release. Wasn't expecting it to be the outcome!!

Even though their stats were identical, Koopa was better than Toad, due to not being Toad.

No need to download this as the original still gets a weekly run out in my flat, still absolutely wonderful.

For 2p it was always koopa versus toad. Bowser was too fat, if you got shelled you were done for. I was toad, but only because my brother battered me if I picked koopa. Pretty sure toad was the bitch's choice, but I still have love for the bubble headed freak and stick with him on all later versions.

This is a game I'm going to instabuy just because it was so good Nintendo deserves it. Even if they are corporate-whoring, fan-neglecting, living-on-past-glories slags.

PS. Time-trialing mario circuit 1 is the stuff that dreams are made of.

LBoom: According to Rare, Donkey Kong Jr. is the current DK, so in the end it doesn't really make a difference I guess. I always thought Cranky Kong being the original barrel throwing ape was a nice touch.

Having waited this long its kind of a shame they couldn't have spent some time putting online multiplayer in and improved the graphics, added some more tracks... basically creating a follow up to the best game ever rather than release the convoluted versions they did.

At last! *THE* best MK game largely because, you know, it was actually a RACING game first, and a party game second.

Aged? Pfft! Nope.

Best chara's were obviously Koopa/Toad for 2P, DK/Bowser for TT. Unless it's changed, all the World Records are with DK/Bowser.

It'll be the sloooow PAL version though won't it? Gah, impossible to play that after years of the NTSC version. Ergo, no sale

Wonder if this will be the PAL-optimised 50Hz version or a full-on 60Hz update? Personally I hope the latter although I imagine a lot of Euro peeps will have the 50Hz timings ingrained.

Spent loads of time with this as a kid. Think I've only got 500 or 700 points left though. Either way they will make me buy 1000 or what is the minimum. Might just search the catalogue for stuff to spend all the remainder on

Honestly, what kind of flackin idiots buy these overpriced worse-than-emulated ports to the wii? I have had this on my mac/pc for years and it sucks. Sorry, nostalgia is a dirty slut. And for you dumb eggs that want to keep shoveling your hard earned money to these dead in the water devs you might want to try a little thing called a torrent. It will save you hundreds. Laters.

Look at 0:34 and you'll see the graphical 'weirdness' at the bottom of the screen that was only present in the 50hz PAL version of SMC. I can only assume that was a by-product of Nintendo trying to optimise the speed at the time.

Looks like I'll be sticking with my 60hz SFC cart.
