I know what Japanese people look like, I want to see a big picture of the game and a small pic of the locals. Except for the ones playing Warioware.. all akimbo like that..

Super Mario Sunshine was better than 95% of the games ever released. But still it was one of the worst mario ever released, so that's why it gets all the hate...

On the Wii, yes.

In general, NO.

But listen, I guess it depends what 'compels' you personally. Captain Howdy from the Exorcist found 'the power of Christ' rather compelling, I guess for you it's bright colours and childish looking characters. To each his own.

So what exactly would you define a "kiddy" visual style as then - as that's what was being refer to. Regardless of the depths and complexities in the gameplay Mario games, for me, epitomise a "kiddy" or "childish" graphical style.

See, regardless of your definition, just the fact that you look at those screenshots and go "it looks kiddy" instead of "it looks awesome" means that you still have a lot of growing up to do, no matter what your physical age is. ;) In five years or so, you'll understand. Hopefully.

No one said it won't be awesome, just that it has a childish artistic style, which it indubitably does! Besides, Mario is a 'kiddy' game, it always has been, I used to play it back in the 80's when I was ...erm...a kid so I really don't understand why anyone would get upset about another person saying Mario is a kids game or has a childish art style. It is and it does get over it ;-)

First of all, it's Mario. Nintendo will not limit the newest main installment of their most iconic world-famous franchise to kids only. They wouldn't, and they don't. They'd lose money. This is a simple fact, and you should just get over it, punk. ;) Just because a game doesn't involve SHOOTAN, blood, and big sweaty hunks moaning and groaning at each other (which a lot of you people seem to love), doesn't mean it's the fucking Teletubbies by default.

You seem to be missing something. I'll repeat myself. Nobody is denying that Mario and friends can mostly be described as "adorable". No, it's the fact that you apparently feel the need to come in here and basically call people childish because of the way those screenshots make you feel, that makes you sound as if you've yet to grow hair in your nether regions.

"Upset" is an overstatement. It's more like being annoyed when some thirteen year old tells you Bugs Bunny is for kids because it's got cartoonish characters with big heads in it. He's too grown up for that, it's not cool anymore. He wants to watch He-Man now! Then you sigh and realize it's just a phase, and when he -really- grows up he'll see those old cartoons for what they are: well and truly for everyone.

"come in here and basically call people childish because"

This is why I love debating on the Internet, you see, people like you seem to forget that this is a group chat not a one on one conversation. Therefore everyone can see and read exactly what you and I have said. Nowhere in this thread have I called anyone childish or even implied it. You might still like the way fizzy cola bottles taste, this in itself does not make you 'childish' so in the same vein enjoying the childish style of Mario does not make you childish in itself either.

"First of all, it's Mario. Nintendo will not limit the newest main installment of their most iconic world-famous franchise to kids only."

Yes I agree, Ninty aren't going to put an 'under 10 years' rating on the SMG game box, why would they? They know people of all ages will have a go but as far as I'm concerned, games consoles are toys hence childish by nature. Obviously some games are more specifically aimed at the younger gamers than others, Mario being a prime example (what would you buy your kid, Mario or Manhunt?). Again I never once implied it was illegal for an adult to play or even enjoy the game, there's nothing wrong with that. It's people with over sensitive attitudes towards their favourite little 'toys' that I would consider in need of perhaps maturing a bit and maybe even allowing a pube to grow ;-)

And on a lighter note.....

"Nobody is denying that Mario and friends can mostly be described as "adorable"."

(At the risk of lowering the tone) LOL "Mario is teh like sooo adorable" You're ghey innit :) .... Sorry, couldn't help myself but you know you still love me :D

Now, at the risk of sounding like one of those people who quote a dictionary at every occasion (I don't usually, honest :p )....

"Childish, infantile, childlike refer to characteristics or qualities of childhood. The ending -ish often has unfavorable connotations; childish therefore refers to characteristics that are undesirable and unpleasant: childish selfishness, outbursts of temper."

You referring to a person, or the things that person enjoys, as childish, is basically the same thing. Whether it's intentional or you don't even realize it: you sound very condescending. And to be frank, I have a sneaking suspicion it's the former, even if you won't admit it. ;)

Also, you still seem to be under the assumption that the game is aimed at children only. It just isn't. Children like quick, linear romps with little complexity, freedom or thought in general. One particular eleven year old in my family loves all sorts of online flash games where you shoot stuff or race laps while collecting stuff on the track (he also likes Killzone, btw), but when presented with something like Mario Sunshine (arguable a very bright and non-threatening game) he's constantly whining that he doesn't know where to go or what to do next.

If they wanted a game for children only, they'd make Mario Runs Along a Rail Avoiding Crap For Five Minutes. Instead, they make something that holds interest for everyone. It's a simple truth no matter how much you would love to believe otherwise. "For all ages" truly means "for all ages" here.

And for the record, yes I do enjoy the bright, colourful and technically very impressive graphics of this game, even if only for the fact that it represents a break from the frankly nauseating torrent of identical brown and grey shooting games with identical hollywood type tough guys firing identical guns at identical monsters or guys, that come out each year. SMG is more "immediately visually compelling" than ALL of those shooters. And whether it looks better than all other games in general would be hard to say (there are a lot of games...) but I'd say it's damn close.

And, yeah, I'm not even a native English speaker so if "adorable" holds some sort of gay connotation to you Brits, I wouldn't know. Then again, after the Elebits/Eledees thing, nothing surprises me anymore. ;p

To me theres a clear difference.

Lets take a pixar movie for example - it's a cartoon, it's SUITABLE for kids.. But that doesnt mean it's ONLY for kids and "kiddy".

Now lets take an episode of sesame street, or telletubbies, barny, or whatever - which is clearly made just for kids. That is "kiddy".

Just because a game doesnt have hoes and guns, and violence and gore doesnt automatically mean it's for kids. Just because it's suitable for EVERYONE doesnt mean it's just for kids.

Personally i think needlessly violent gory games are more suitable for kids who think that kinda shite is cool and can ignore the lack of gameplay just because its "adult".

Adults tend to have been playing games longer and know that no matter what, just because a mario game looks cartoony - it'll still provide a good challenge that many modern games lack (due to trying to appeal to kids).

And dont get me started on the modern sonic games which tried to end up looking "more grown up" to appease moron kids who think this is too "kiddy" for them - and end up looking like shite.

Now run along children, we grown ups will be enjoying a great game.. you go back to your mindlessly boring shooters...

Oh, and by the way, are you... serious? You mean to tell me there's NOT an absolute overabundance of shooters that all look similar? That's just fucking rich, LOL! Do you even have eyes, or are you typing this on a braille keyboard?

For once I actually agree with you smelly I must be getting senile or something :) . Just to make it clear though, I still hate you ;-)

@Nikanoru

"The ending -ish often has unfavorable connotations"

Note the word 'often' meaning 'not always'. If you took my comment as condescending it's because you chose to take it that way, not because of anything I've actually said.

"Children like quick, linear romps with little complexity, freedom or thought in general."

That's a generalization and I totally disagree with it, as a child (8/9ish) I used to love games like Zelda/Landstalker more than life itself and so did many of my little chums at the time. Don't you remember that far back? Kids scrambling to the news agents to get their latest copy of MeanMachines or CVG. You talk about gaming almost as if it's a new thing...

"And for the record, yes I do enjoy the bright, colourful and technically very impressive graphics of this game"

I like the style too, I never said otherwise as for it being 'technically very impressive', for a Wii game, it's pretty good, well, the best so far atleast. Compared to a modern PC/360/PS3 game it's not "technically" impressive at all, but still 'nice' to look at.

"One particular eleven year old in my family loves all sorts of online flash games where you shoot stuff or race laps while collecting stuff on the track"

Awwww, you're talking about yourself aren't you poppet, bless your little cotton socks ;-)

@Supine

Okay.. i'll say what i really think (and REALLY upset people).

I personally think the worst thing which happened to console games was microsoft getting involved.

Since the xbox all we seem to have as gamers are games traditionally given to pc gamers - "adult" (cough) games in dull colours, which more times than not feature nothing more than moving a crosshair and pressing fire (the WORST kind of mini-game imho .. one which is extended for the whole game). Which are seemingly only different to each other due to the fact that one is more pretty than another, or more well marketed or more violent and gory.

No-one seems to give a flying fuck about whether games are any fun any more.

So I personally say thank fuck for nintendo - sure i may not agree with all their choices of late.. At least we're seeing games which DONT look the same as every fucking thing else on the market.

And that's spoken as a gamer who enjoys playing games.. and nothing else.

Sure, you may think mario is kiddy.. Go fuck off and play halo 3.. i'm sure you'll enjoy it.. as it'll have pretty pixels and you get to shoot things (again). Personally i pitty your choices. I feel sorry for you not getting to enjoy games like this (despite probably not even given them a chance because they're not "mature" enough for you), but I dont give a flying fuck if you dont.. it's your loss not mine.

.. just please stop coming into every nintendo thread telling me you dont.

"Childish behaviour is something we should all try to leave behind us as we grow older."

It totally depends upon the context though doesn't it, I don't believe (for instance) that having a childish sense of humour is a bad thing at all. I have a good friend who is (when needed) an extremely mature and serious person (she's a paramedic) but she finds things like Southpark or general toilet humour hilarious, this is what I was trying to explain to Nikanoru earlier but he didn't seem to get it...Then again he just likes arguing with me coz he fancies me and wants to play with my wii.

I say you're wrong on that one.. Mario games tend to be the best designed games around with near perfect learning curves, etc etc.

I call that pretty sophisticated (when compared to just running down corridors shooting shit)

Damn, I missed a lot of the fun!

First of all, Kryon... you know kids these days aren't the same. Way back then, we had games with no clear paths, and no map screens, and we had to walk through snowstorms, uphill both ways just to buy them. And we liked it! Any modern day child would crumple under such asperities!

And second, you may deny your trolling ways, but that's like MJ saying he did not touch that boy anywhere he didn't want to be touched. You're not fooling anyone! ;) ...that was a bit too much, wasn't it. Yeah I know. :(

I actually agree with Smelly there. The thing with Mario games is the sophistication and complexity. Something a lot of platformers completely miss when trying to copy.

In some ways it's a bit like the content of Pixar movies. Lots of stuff for all ages. Things kids won't notice and stuff adults don't appreciate as much. Works on a lot of levels.

Graphically its still "kiddy" in my opinion and not my cup-o-tea. I enjoy the games despite the graphical style.

"But that level of sophistication is asked of the developer, not the player."

But if a game is crafted well then the player shouldnt have to notice those levels of sophistication becasue they're too busy having fun.

When I played mario 64/mario sunshine for the first time.. every level i approached wondering how they're going to suprise me next - how will the environments change? Am i going to get a new ability? What if i take that ability back to previous levels? etc etc.

I play a fps (not mentioning any names) and i go "oh look some more story.. snore.. oh look a new weapon.. snore" - I'm still shooting stuff.. nothing's changed.

THATS why i enjoy mario games over everything else.
