Street Fighter IV unveiled

Ryu and Ken still at it.

The big announcement Capcom has been counting down to was none other than the unveiling of Street Fighter IV.

It came in the form of a single cinematic trailer, though, so no specific platforms, gameplay details or dates are known at the moment.

In the video - now showing on Eurogamer TV - we meet the familiar and grizzled expressions of Ryu and Ken, who are still trying to use the same array of moves to beat each other up - only one is like Ben Stiller and the other Owen Wilson.

The action is shot in a stylised watercolour-inspired montage, and shows the red and white-clad karate heroes pulling out dragon punches, fireballs and annoying kicks that block you in a corner and stop you from getting back up. Don't get me started on M. Bison, he made me smash my SNES pad.

It could all just be a rather artistic introduction to the fourth instalment in a 2D fighting series, of course, or it might be an indication that the action is about to go 3D. No one knows, yet. But we will be here to tell you when we do.

Until then, head over to Eurogamer TV to see the very first trailer for Street Fighter IV.

  • LOLLERS #2 5 years ago

Apparently I disagree wih the rest of the internet in thinking this looks rubbish. For a trailer.
  • TONYgr #3 5 years ago

lets hope its 2d and some old favorites return!
  • Steroyd #4 5 years ago

SFII will always have a place in my heart.
  • AcidSnake #5 5 years ago

I broke my SNES pad too because of Bison!
    The git kept winning...
So I wanted to really kick his ass with a heavy kick...That's when the shoulder button broke in half and my finger slid into the controller...
    The bastard...

What Street Fighter needs to do is be more like Virtua Fighter. Hardcore fighting sim mechanics, but with fireballs and large, green electrical creatures.

It also needs to be done in the art style of the trailer, because that was lookin' so sweet.
  • Steroyd #8 5 years ago

If SF becomes more like VF, they've instantly lost one sale.
  • login_name #9 5 years ago

If it is 3D it better be a whole lot better than the other 3D efforts. I enjoyed EX a little but it wasn't Street Fighter.
  • patlike #10 5 years ago

    Please be 2D.

    *crosses everything*

According to 1up, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD won't be out this year, while Capcom continues to struggle with eliminating fun-crippling lag worms. Relevant to both XBLA and PSN versions. It'll have proper widescreen support, and (uh-oh) remixed music when it is released, as well.
  • Milbe #12 5 years ago

I hope they just go back to good old SFII and make it next-gen...
  • semprini #13 5 years ago

Nice trailer, reminds me a lot of the Ryu & Sagat fight from opening to the anime film.
  • thepiedpiper #14 5 years ago

er, what's the point of that trailer?
  • Pac-man-ate-my-wife #15 5 years ago

If this isn't 2D it's not Street Fighter.
  • Darren #16 5 years ago

I never understood the appeal of the 2D Streetfighter games at all, they're were pretty dull to play IMO. However, I do remember buying Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes on the Dreamcast and being blown away by the spectacular gameplay... now THAT was a great game.
  • Iora #17 5 years ago

    @thepiedpiper

The point of this trailer is very much the point of any trailer.

They are announcing to the world that they are making StreetFighter IV [fans get excited] Were you expecting a story or something?!

*sighs* no but i dunno, just something more than just fmv? it doesn't tell you anything more than this article. know what i mean?
  • Grogmonkey #19 5 years ago

It wasn't, in fact, a trailer. It was a teaser. The difference between the two is that your standard teaser has a complete lack of anything that tells you what the thing being teasered is actually like. It's used to tease people. Hence the name.

If I wasn't at work now I would be jerking off all over this web page...

Oh fuck it, nobody will notice!
  • Pac #21 5 years ago

If it is in 2D what pad would you play it on?

the 360s D pad is crap and the Wii doesn't have the right set up unless you use the classic controller.

    mmm classic controller.
  • HiddenAway #22 5 years ago

Hold on. Were platforms for this even announced? O.o
  • Turambar #23 5 years ago

If it's 2D i demand a lot more graphical detail. If it's 3D i don't see why the gameplay can't be exactly the same if they use a fixed side on camera like the 2D versions.
  • Pac #24 5 years ago

    @FluffyTucker

Interesting...might give it a go. Can't get any worse.
  • Jac #25 5 years ago

    That music is awful.
  • Kami #26 5 years ago

M worry is that Capcom are going to be in a really hard place on this. They're going to have to keep you 2D purists happy as well as trying to make it appeal to those of us who have moved on to greener pastures - or to appeal to the few people who may not actually know what Street Fighter is. That's going to be a tough one.

In just hope they pull it off. Street Fighter is classic, but then, so is Soul Calibur. I know which one I have more fun playing these days.
  • Darren #27 5 years ago

@FluffyTucker - You ARE joking, right?

The Xbox and Xbox 360's controller have the worst D-pads I've ever come across in all my years of gaming and even worn, they're vastly inferior to the excellent ones the PS2 and PS3 controllers. I can't understand how Microsoft can make a controller for the 360 that is otherwise so utterly wonderful but yet completely balls up the D-pad... it's dreadful. It's the reason I bought a Chatpad as the analogue stick is too tetchy for entering text and the D-pad was just unbearably awful.
  • Zuiyo #28 5 years ago

Street Fighter II on the new PSP is all I play now, day and night. I played back at the day when it hit the arcades. It still blows me away.

I don't want to speculate, but I would love this to be the equivalent of Gradius V for fighting games. Great 3D looks, solid 2D gameplay. On the other hand, this is going to be the first SF game created for consoles only, skipping the arcade stage.

I am very excited, want to know more!
  • TONYgr #29 5 years ago

darren you are wrong.well thats my opinion. i played sf 3 third strike with akuma on 360 and works perfectly.no problem with uppercuts or fireballs.just perfect!

This would be amazing for online play. I'm a tad worried though that it'll prove I'm not nearly as good as I always thought I was...
  • legendmir #31 5 years ago

i would be so happy about this but all my third strike buddies have shipped off to spain :( fucking ea...
  • rhinoxious #32 5 years ago

    Turambar +1

Agreed, as long as the grpahics are good and the gameplay retains the immediacy of a 2D system then it's still street fighter to me.
  • DarthCheesiest #33 5 years ago

All I need now is Shenmue III and my life will be complete, that is so long as it is better than Street Fighter 3.
  • Shrub #34 5 years ago

I can't see them using sprites, unless they plan a DS/PSP version. I think they will render everything as 3D models - but they could restrict all movement to a single 2D plane thus ( I would imagine) satisfying the fans. Yep, that would be best idea, IMHO :)
  • login_name #35 5 years ago

    @Shrub

You obviously didn't play the EX series.
  • DarthCheesiest #36 5 years ago

I know nothing about arcades these days. It seemed like games systems were getting better than Arcades last time I went. I just assume it would be coin-op first and therefore maybe 2D to be cheap and still look good, no one wants another crappy looking StreetFighter EX.
  • MBar #37 5 years ago

    Holy lots of swear words.

I suck at fighting games but that looks like a buy.

Goddamn trailer is lieing to me obviously, but we'll see.
  • Pulsar_t #38 5 years ago

Darren you're absolutely right! I couldn't bother with SFIII even if it's so nicely emulated using that new CPS3 emulator.

Still, this is the best news of the autumn so far.

  • VMerken #40 5 years ago

It will be in 2.5D a la Paper Mario. Or the trailer is gameplay footage with a few cutscenes and slow-mo thrown in. I'd love either option.
  • gelf #41 5 years ago

Now this is something that could convince me to finally get a "next gen" console...whatever it comes out on...
  • BillGaitas #42 5 years ago

  • Pulsar_t #43 5 years ago

"Next gen" should have been a two year old phrase by now! With regard to 7th gen console hardware that is. Or, in other words..

    STOP USING IT FFS!
  • Apologie #44 5 years ago

Awesome..., one of the best fighting games ever. Can't wait
  • Ryuken #45 5 years ago

  • Bumhug360 #46 5 years ago

"It will be in 2.5D a la Paper Mario. "

Ohh like the idea, so Ryu throws a Hadouken at you, quick switch to 3D mode and sidestep out of the way
  • gelf #47 5 years ago

""Next gen" should have been a two year old phrase by now! With regard to 7th gen console hardware that is. Or, in other words..

    STOP USING IT FFS!"

Calm down, I put it in quotes for a reason, I'm sick of the term myself. Its my next gen anyway..well if your one of those who only count it as only graphically as I already have a Wii.

I hope it'll be 2D in gameplay and look, I mean sure it could be cel shaded stuff or whatever but it should fit it look of the old games.
  • Kami #48 5 years ago

Or do like most fighters these days, just make it 3D with combat on a set plane and the ability to move/sidestep across the arena/around the opponent. It's not reinventing the wheel but then, do they really have to?

As for looks, well, Capcom are brilliant at graphics whorage. The problem with the EX series was that even compared to fighters of their time, the games still were ugly as sin, not to mention unlike their rivals they suffered slowdown, graphical glitches and sloppy controls. Basically, the EX Series was top-class shite and Capcom should be thanking their lucky stars people have pretty much put those ghosts to rest.

If I want anything from SF4, it's for it to be on a par with fighters today. Okay, so we'll have the inevitable fireballs and dragon punches and most likely super-combos that make your eyes bleed, your fingers crunch and the screen filled with meteors faling from the sky. Which is fine. I just hope they don't get so stuck on it, because what I love about that trailer, and the animes and all the other SF stuff not game-related, is that their special moves aren't used much. They get stuck in, they fight toe to toe before pulling back for a show-off move.

If Capcom can get anywhere close to that, I will lick their shoes. You can also quote me on this. It just ain't gonna happen, sad as it feels...

The only thing this SF4 announcement has made me feel is that there's a high probability that it's going to backfire on them, end up shit and ruin the dream for many of us...
  • The-Bodybuilder #49 5 years ago

    >"All the world needs now is Shenmue III "

    Fixed for truth.
  • Genji #50 5 years ago

That teaser looks horrible... Ryu looks like a mongoloid! What an ugly bastard.
  • Rash' #51 5 years ago

Where would video games be without Street Fighter? Don't bulls it up Capcom. In fact do one better and remind us all why Street Fighter was such a defining moment... (Looks at previous Street Fighter games) Yeah, maybe just "don't bulls it up" will suffice for now.
  • bahamut.zero #52 5 years ago

Hope they release this on Wii
