Wowzers. I managed to play the arcade version of this in Edinburgh, when Capcom were touring Gamestations eariler in the month, and I was incredibly impressed. Somehow they've managed to keep the SF look and feel, while taking the visuals into 3D. Still, 10/10? This just went from a "buy when the price drops" to an "...oh dear, it looks like the overdraft is getting yet another hit" game!

Ah Street Fighter.. how i loved thee.

I was a huge Street Fighter II Turbo fan back in my snes days.
I could see from the premise of this review, the feverish anticipation, the stage was set for a 10/10.

This might just be the game that gets me back into beat-em ups.

Yeah, shut it STKD. Nice review Simon. I'm also glad to hear about the net code as my childhood street fighter buddies now live on the other side of the world. I hope it stays good after the release date has come and gone.

This was going to be a purchase, even without a review. I don't even mind that this review has barely got any important facts about the game in it. All I need to know is that the netcode is robust, that they have calmed down on all the extras like Super moves, cancels, isms, etc. And I am sold.

Roll on friday.

Ahhhhh...

/climax timed perfectly to coincide with reading "10/10" at the end of the review

Really nice review, I do disagree to some extent with a couple of points from this paragraph:

"Street Fighter IV's niggles are few, and overwhelmed by its many triumphs. There is some disappointment with the four new characters, none of whom seem to quite fit the classic Street Fighter aesthetic (Crimson Viper in particular looks like she's just stepped out of an SNK game) ... We found being forced back to the character select screen after a continue an unnecessary irritation, adding an often superfluous load. And finally, the lack of any spectator slots online, something that may be addressed in a future patch to allow for friends to play winner-stays-on, is a slight oversight."

In order:

1) I think I've heard the "Viper looks like an SNK character" line too many times now since the first sighting of the new characters, so I'm bored of it. Also, no, she doesn't really look like a "classic" SF character, but she's not - she's an SFIV character. You know, a New Challenger. Also, Abel fits SF perfectly. Rufus and Fuerte not so much, but only really because they seem too "comical". As an idea for a new SF character, a Luchador makes great sense in the context of the karate champs, Sumo wrestlers, Kung Fu movie star etc.

2) Being able to pick a new character after a continue is always a good idea, and is a "tradition" that we seem so pleased to uphold elsewhere.

3) The apparent "bare-bones" approach to the online is more than an oversight, it's a massive black mark against the game. Yes, I'm glad that they focused on getting solid netcode together rather than adding in four or six player lobbies that lag to hell and back, but not being able to do both definitely has to count against Capcom, imo.

No comment on PS3 vs 360 game quality and joypad suitability? Or do we have to wait for a wanky pixel and frame count from everyone's favourite Richie?

Damn this would be a hard game to review, the majority of readers and writers on this website would have grown up on street fighter 2. It would be impossible to look at this game with objectivity and so what... cant wait!

Last SF I played was SFII: Special Championship Edition on the Megadrive. The day I got it was one of the most exciting of my childhood. It's gonna be a long week!

Just downloaded the SFIV theme from PSN - it's even got customised sound effects!

Since this is in the 360 section, I am guessing the net code for XBL is what Simon tested. What I would like to know does is the PS3 netcode on par.

My problem is that I have PS3 and 360 friends who will be getting the game. Since I have both systems, I have to decide which system to get or both. The majority of my friends who play Street Figther are on the PS3. At this moment, I am leaning towards the PS3 version but if the net code on the PS3 is not as good as the 360, I might go the 360 route.

A lot of people that grew with SF2 actually preferred Mortal Kombat.I hope somebody will make a great MK game in the end of this generation, but with Midway and Ed Boon in charge that simply won't happen.

What's the point? We all know the game will be of a slightly lower quality on PS3, either accept that and be happy or buy a 360 and stop whinging.

Hmmm.

I would love to play this game. However, having played the Arcade version of SFII I can honestly say that the 360 pad makes it unplayable for me.

How are the controls for this one? And more importantly, is there a Gamepad for the 360 that matches the quality of the SNES original pad? Playing SFII Turbo on that machine was pure pleasure.
