Stranglehold slips a bit
Dated for 360, PS3 and PC.
Stranglehold has backed casually toward the counter of retail and slipped its bottom gently along it - which is a meaningless way of saying it's now due out in mid-September.
The Midway-developed shooter, built on Unreal Engine 3, will now be released in Europe for 360 on 14th September, for PC on 21st September and for PS3 in October - and Midway assures us the game is "gold".
As you know by now, Stranglehold is an action game created in collaboration with John Woo, throughout which you take control of Inspector Tequila from Woo's influential action film Hard Boiled.
In-game Tequila's been done up to look like Chow Yun-Fat (or Ben Grimm, depending on what you make of the modelling), with the latter's voice acting and lots of diving around destructible scenery.
That's thanks to a range of Max Payne-inspired moves including cough-cough "revolutionary" slow-motion Tequila Time. As well as diving around firing at people's heads in slow-motion, you can slow-mo target someone and follow the trail of the bullet to its destination.
You also face the occasional stand-off, where the idea is to dodge incoming slow-mo bullets with the left stick and aim and fire back - or at interactive bits of the scenery - with the right stick.
There's a demo on Xbox Live Marketplace now if you fancy seeing how it works, and you can check out our various impressions on the 360, PS3 or PC gamepages.
Update: We previously reported the PS3 version's release date as 21st September, when it is in fact October. Apologies for the error.

Only problem I can see is that it'll probably be a lil too easy to finish, so no doubt it'll end up being one of my trade in titles for Halo 3 a few weeks later.

Pretty sure the version with Hard Boiled is US only.

Same day as Super Paper Mario, a game I've been waiting for since the Wii launched. Didn't much like the demo either, but could see this being a big hit and joining Riddick in the "decent film-tie ins that aren't actually the film plot" group.

How do some of you live with your incredibly poor taste?"
My thoughts exactly. Simply the most fun I've had since Crackdown. I've played that demo through about 20 times now. Intelligent storyline/dialogue? Fuck right off.

Very short, and by the end of it it seemed they were sick of slow-mo. But there seem to be awesome set pieces galore.

No demo, no sale. And preferably before its release.

The demo was ok, but was still flawed. Given that it shameless pinches pretty much its entire gameplay model from Max payne, it seems reasonable to expect it go at least get the same stuff right.
Shooting might be more hectic in Stranglehold, but a lot of the "I'm the invicible hero, you are the nameless talentless enemies, I shall now kill you in a cool way with complete control" feel of both the MP games AND the Hardboiled movie wasn't really there for me. The basic core gameplay wasn't as tight as MP in many places, and the level design was pretty dire most of the time.
Not a crap game, but not as good as I hoped (which as mentioned is slightly less forgivable given the MP games exist).
