Star Ocean-themed PSP revealed News

Square Enix has taken the wraps off of a fancy Star Ocean-themed PSP Slim & Lite in Japan, which it will release bundled with SNES remake The First Departure in December.

The second game in the acclaimed role-playing series is also being remade for the PSP, although both titles are currently only confirmed for Japan, with European appearances lurking in "TBC" land.

Star Ocean is a sci-fi-inspired series from developer tri-Ace, the mastermind behind the excellent Valkyrie Profile role-playing games.

Both The First Departure and The Second Evolution remakes will feature new cutscenes, graphics, fully voiced dialogue, and new playable characters.

Square Enix is also working on a fresh instalment in Star Ocean 4, although platforms and specifics are not confirmed.

Well given at the moment out of all the ones they promised the only colour we’ve got is black!! I want the new PSP, but I want a white one, but I can’t even get one of those!

So, this is clearly a product of the massive success of the Final Fantasy PSP, eh?

Won't see light of day over here, though. Star Ocean just isn't popular enough outside Japan.

Star Ocean 2 and 3 I think did reasonably well in the US, so I'd expect to see them there. And since the PSP is unregioned, if Squenix do the usual thing and give us the shaft, I'll just import them.

Since Star Ocean: The Second Story is one of my all time favourite games, and I never got a chance to play the original, I'm hoping these remakes get at least a US release. My poor PSP has very little titles to its name, compared to my DS.
