Star Ocean PSP for October News

PSP News by Robert Purchese

21 August, 2008

Square Enix plans to release PSP game Star Ocean: First Departure in Europe this October.

This, a remake of Star Ocean for SNES, will mark the first time the space role-playing adventure has appeared outside of Japan.

Of course, being some 12 years later, Star Ocean: First Departure will be treated to brand new cut-scenes and polished visuals, while retaining plenty of interplay between key characters. Oh no Melanie Mangle has been shot by a duck hunter, for instance.

Star Ocean: The Second Evolution is also being remade for PSP, although no European plans have been hinted at yet.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the fourth instalment in the series, will be released on Xbox 360 sometime next year. No other platforms have been associated with the game.

Remake of the SNES version?

I'm not sure whether this is a good or bad thing.

Surely better than a straight port?

The Snes version is a great game.

You can a translation patch for the rom which makes it playable.

I'm guessing they'll update the graphics though or that really would be a bad effort.

The graphics were really good back in the day but the story was great.

I'll pick it up for another run through.

That's my point. Remember what they did with Final Fantasy I & II?

The one thing is that the port will hopefully be done by Tri Ace who make the games.

They are published by squenix.

Ah yes, a sprite update, I see what you mean. I'm sure I read it was getting a 3D overhaul.

I prefer the sprite updates on the PSP, to the 3d stuff on the DS Final Fantasys. 2d stuff looks great on the PSP screen.

FF4 DS looks on a par with FF7 almost... although very slow. I'd love to have that on this system.

Oh please, check the videos and screenshots before you complain about the (potential) graphics. It's been released in Japan a while ago, as well as 2nd Evolution.

Yeah, these were released ages ago in Japan, and feature pre-rendered backgrounds, 3D battles, new animated cutscenes and full voice acting.

Which is great, in my opinion. Also, I think, there are new characters and an improved, perhaps even extended, story.
