Err will that be out with his next release??
• Moonbender #4 10 years ago

Stalker gets the price for being the first shooter to sport a protagonist wearing a woolen pullover.
• Razz #5 10 years ago

Or the Pee Wee Hermen version: Stalker: Singled handed crusader. :D

Holy cow, this really looks quite fantastic. Sorry, can't think of anything more original at the moment. This could be the best-looking FPS currently in development (*hint* *hint*).
• Moonbender #7 10 years ago

(*hint* *hint*)

You may hint, but I don't get it ... was that irony?
• UncleLou #8 10 years ago

Not at all, the screens DO look fantastic, don't they? I was just trying to provoke some comments on another FPS whose name I've momentarily forgotten.

Er, forget it...
• Moonbender #9 10 years ago

Okay. Anyway, I agree the screens look great, so in the end all is good. ;)
• Razz #10 10 years ago

Those screens.. good?!?
o_0 eh?!?

Look those shit 2d trees! SoF2 looks much better!
Fools!

• Moonbender #11 10 years ago

The plants do look a bit flakey, but there's so many of them (trees, shrubs, grass everywhere), I can live with it. The best trees I've seen so far are in the 3D Mark Nature benchmark, and even those don't look anywhere close to real.
• Razz #12 10 years ago

"3D Mark Nature benchmark, and even those don't look anywhere close to real."

What do you mean! I thought it was an mpeg of Hampsted Heath when I first saw it, besides you probably have a shit graphics card. ;p

UncleLou : "Holy cow, this really looks quite fantastic. Sorry, can't think of anything more original at the moment. This could be the best-looking FPS currently in development"

Yehh, the screen shots look great :)

When I got to see the FMV movie of this game, I couldn't stop watching it. I can't wait to play this game, and if they wanted, I would pay them for my copy now. ;)
• Moonbender #15 10 years ago

And the best thing is: What they've told us so far of the gameplay makes it sound like the most original FPS of the past years!
• M #16 9 years ago

Yeah vermin sometime in 2004.
• Blerk #17 9 years ago

Crap name. Sounds like a death-metal album title. :-)
• UncleLou #18 9 years ago

Trust Blerk to find something he can complain about. ;-)
• FWB #19 9 years ago

• Whizzo #20 9 years ago

It is looking rather special.
• FWB #21 9 years ago

They just need to do something about this.
• Rowley #22 9 years ago

Don't know what you're all blathering about, certainly looks the biz, if they can put a game in there amongst the gorgeous textures and moody outdoor environments this could be a cracker. It does look like those screens were taken from a system running a quad p4 with a super-duper gfx and more memory than a herd of elephants. Min spec 1Ghz with 64mb gfx and half gig mem I reckons.

I can always find something to complain about. And it is a crap name, isn't it?
• FWB #24 9 years ago

Blerk, its named/based after/on this.

Here's an English copy of a book which undoubtably influenced Tarkovsky, Roadside Panic.

Cripes, that's what I wanted to tell him!

Er, the book's called "Roadside Picnic" though. Obviuosly you haven't even read it, FWB. Tsk tsk.

• Blerk #26 9 years ago

That's very interesting, both of you. It's still a crap name, though. :-)
• FWB #27 9 years ago

Opps, my mistake. Right you are Lou. Tis indeed "Picnic". Dyslexia at work. :)

Blerk, try the Russian version. Translations never work. :)
Edited by FWB at 08/05/03 @ 14:22
• UncleLou #28 9 years ago

No, not dsylexia. It's obvious you haven't read the book, or this mistake wouldn't have happened. It's quite a severe mistake, btw. You just wanted to impress Blerk with knowledge of a book you haven't even read!

What do you mean, I certainly have no friends?
• Marcus #29 9 years ago

A very strange choice for a license though - Being loosely based on an obscure (to non-movie buffs) film. Still, better than basing it upon Solaris I guess.

I would imagine it is obscure to "westerners", but its pretty well known in the East (the film that is).

So Lou, what's the storyline? ;)
• UncleLou #31 9 years ago

It's about an alien artifact that seems to fulfil the wishes of the people who see it. The deeper question of the book is whether it's really something special, a present by the aliens for example, or whether they just made a "roadside" picnic on their trip through space, and the artifact is nothing more like, for example, what the ashes of a cigarette is to us humans.

Heh! ;-)

Btw, I can't find the preview (or news story) on Stalker, no matter what I type into he search field, it either brings useless results or Mugs telling me to be less specific. :-(

Er whoever posted these up seems to have slipped some random screenies from another FPS. I'm talking about the red one and the one next to it. I've been following this games progress for a while and I don't think they're from Stalker, unless its shots of really early stuff. Apologies if I'm mistaken.

Edit: OK I am mistaken, They are from that really early stuff they released. There I was trying to look all clever. Won't try that again.

• ssuellid #37 9 years ago

This is looking nicer and nicer. Just hope the gameplay is good - IMHO this looks more interesting than either Doom 3 or HL2.
• UncleLou #38 9 years ago

I agree, ssuellid. If I had the choice of getting a finished version of Stalker or HL2 today, I'd choose Stalker.
• Tiger_Walts #39 9 years ago

It promises to be less structured in plot development than any other FPS in current development, the ones that get closest to a freeform structure are, in descending order Deus Ex: Invisible War, Far Cry and Thief 3.
• UncleLou #40 9 years ago

What I'd really like (I don't know if that's an actual feature maybe) to have is a hut or house or something where you can store stuff, sleep a night, park the Lada in front of it, and use it as a base for the whole game, with maybe NPCs visiting or trying to raid you at night etc.
• gamesb*tch #41 9 years ago

best thing is we don't have to choose we can have both! ray for PC!

the real difference between the games is the in-game transportation, choose between cranky Yugo/Trebant or tricked out beach buggy!

beach buggy please!

• Tiger_Walts #42 9 years ago

Yeah, but East European and Russian vehicles are built like tanks...
• UncleLou #43 9 years ago

the real difference between the games is the in-game transportation

I hope this isn't the biggest difference, tbh. I think HL2 will be great, but linear (which is absolutely ok for an FPS), while I hope that Stalker is much more RPG-heavy, with many NPCs to interact and trade with, a very open level-design etc.
• Shadrach #44 9 years ago

Another good thing is you can play through single player co-op with up to four mates apparently. A nice LAN, a couple of ninja PC's, Roger Wilco and a like minded house mate? I think this could be good. Halo proved co-op play can work like a charm, I want to see developers catching on to it. Its cool to be able to share all your single player experiences with a mate.

No idea about the house, but that's my understanding of the game. You even have to maintain the car, fill it up with petrol.

According to the last interview I read, that's not true. Its even better than that. This will have specific co-op gameplay, with specific endings (I highlighted that "s" for a reason :) ) not available in SP.

A friend of mine does Lada rally driving in Russia. They're actually not bad cars. They just don't have all the modcons. :)

there's a new video just released yesterday finally showing off the DX 9.1 effects outdoors for the first time. it's rather nice although a little jumpy for some reason.

I like this quote from may 2005:

"i actually like the fact that they don't (yet) succumb to some deadline pressure but try to make the best out of it. "

Still not succumbing then
• Snooz #53 6 years ago

@Fruit: Loved the "joke" too, but seeing that it was posted in 2003 kind of turned it into a sad thing...

Stopped drooling on this game for about a year ago, but would still give it a go if it will get released. (2014 maybe?)
• Grom #54 6 years ago
