S.T.A.L.K.E.R. prequel gets date News

PC News by Robert Purchese

27 March, 2008

Deep Silver and GSC World Publishing will be releasing S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky around the world on 29th August.

The game been expected towards the beginning of the year, but a slight delay is unsurprising given the legacy of the first title.

Clear Sky is a prequel that offers an alternative view of the events in the 2007 PC original, granting you the opportunity live your life as a mercenary and fight for numerous factions.

Alongside all this will be smarter enemies and technological improvements to the open-ended world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is based around the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in a fictional world where everything went even more pear-shaped than we remember it. And we loved it; it was gigantic and scary, if a little rough around the edges.

Pop over to our S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Review or Clear Sky first impressions to find out more.

Nice!
I'm playing the first one at the moment.
Sooo good.

I should have a more monstrous graphics card by the time this hits.

Considering GSC's record on the original Stalker, it wouldn't surprise me if we were already living in a radioactive wasteland by the time this actually gets released.

Did they ever get the first game working properly?

STALKER was ace. I shall play it again at some point I think, probably with a few mods to sort some of the issues.

It's had a fair few patches and the buggy, system-killing dynamic lighting code was fixed by a third party in the end:

Any chance of a summary of the bug and what Float32 did to fix it?
I think I've got an unpatched vanilla STALKER on my system...

I think the full dynamic lighting code was stuck on at the last minute and really unoptimized, so it's basically a bit of a system killer on non-beastly rigs.

The float32 mode is just a re-write of the dynamic lighting code that not only looks better but can give you around 20% better framerates!

I've only got an cheapo 8600GT, but I'm playing the game at the moment with the float mod installed and the graphics maxed out at 1440X900, it's running really nicely and looks fantastic.

I wonder if they've optimized the engine any for the prequel.

I've got a 8600GTm DDR3 and my screen is 1440res... I'll have to put this on and see what happens because I can set all the sliders to max which aren't quite hitting that yet! I think I'm playing on 1280res at the moment too.

I must check to see if I'm fully patched too. I think I just read the game is patched up to v1.6, so will do some digging.

I found float32 version 2.0 to be a bit buggy, but the final 1.5 version is still on the site and it works nicely.

I just need to get the nerve up to continue playing, my manpoints took a dent as I actually had to turn it off last night due to proper fear ;)

Yes. Worked flawlessly for me after the first patch.

Does the game look a lot worse if you switch dynamic lighting off?

Yep, it uses a completely different directX 8 renderer in static lighting mode, you lose nearly all the bump and normal mapping, all the HDR, all the torchlight effects... it's like a completely different game altogether.

As far as I know, you actually can't play properly without dynamic lighting, because the torch doesn't work. And you really need the torch.

Hmm, can you use the patch if you get the game thru Steam?

The Steam version is automatically patched whenever neccessary, like everything else on steam.

I wish they'd just work on the promised 1.1 patch instead. It was supposed to be released last year and add some good stuff to the SP mode - most notably, a Freeplay option which removes the limits from the ALife system and lets you play independent of the storyline.

It's a great game all in all, but GSC really need to get their act together. I mean, look at companies like Deep Silver or CD Project. The Fall was flawed as hell at release, but it got speedy and thorough support through patches. The Witcher gets a huge content patch soon as well. And a lot sooner than a year after release!

We're talking about a 3rd party patch, though.

Float is more a mod than a patch, so you should be fine using it with the steam version.

Float is on. Now running at 1440res with all but shadows on grass on, very little Antistropping Filtering and Anti Aliens though.
Still cheers for that mod!
