Tunguska is suspected to be an asteroid that detonated about 6-8km above the ground and flattened trees for approx 22km in 1906ish, no-one got there until 1912 or maybe later as it's in Siberia.

The people at NASA who are meant to look for these things in real life are underfunded, and have an annual budget similar to the budget of a PS2 game. So if we do get killed in asteroid impacts due to underfunding, at least we know the money was used sensibly on stuff like Driv3r.
