Doesn't hold a candle to what I've seen of GT5. In fact, I'd go so far as saying GT4 looks better. Some of the backgrounds especially look decidedly last-gen.

Then again, we can't all be Polyphony.

Is it just me or is this fairly unimpressive next to various other racing titles? Looks are starting to reach a limit in this genre even with next gen technology.

It comes down to gameplay and handling now and even then there is a peak thats already been achieved, can it get any better?

Low framerates would actually make sense in eyecandy racers. Then you'd might be able to notice any of it while driving.

That's not really how it works, though, because a low framerate doesn't mean you have more time to admire something in the scenery, it just means the scenery, while taking the same time to fly past you as in a game with a high framerate, gets updated less often in the process. :)
