Exceptionally pretty. Where are the other cars though? :-)
  • Alastair #2 10 years ago

Hmm, I may have to find a way of renting/borrowing an XBox when this comes out - the appeal of driving round Edinburgh is quite strong.
Although not strong enough to make me want to buy one!
  • st3ph3n #3 10 years ago

    Alastair,

Do you think the tourists would randomly walk across the roads in the game? Or would you keep getting arse holes driving down the bus lanes?

I'd love to try and get the back end of a porsche 911 sliding coming screaming down from work (where george IV bridge meets the high street) towards princes street. It's quick, downhill and fairly twisty.

(note: I tried this in my Vectra, but with limited success)

    st3ph3n,
Wonder if they've programmed in the tramp who stands on the edge of the pavement and waves through the traffic, as if he's got right of way, but is giving it up gracefully! Have you ever seen him?

Remember a great plan, oft discussed at Uni ski club pub nights, of 'skiing' down the high street while being towed by someones car. We would have used some old club skis. Not suprisingly, it never amounted to anything!

Doubt it'll have the stretch of road where I got flashed by a Gatso and earned my first 3 points! :o(

  • st3ph3n #5 10 years ago

I've been speeding succesfully for 4 years now, been flashed twice heading towards the camera though. Mind you being a native weegie there aren't nearly as many cameras on the westside as there is through here. I think I pass about 4 if I drive to work.
  • Razz #6 10 years ago

ARGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! I've barely got over the first one, and you show me this! M$ Xbox is god!

    -Razz
  • Alastair #7 10 years ago

Was flashed several times I think but only done for one of them. Typically I now can't remember where it was though - somewhere on the 45 route out to HW campus.
  • Super Stu #8 10 years ago

That's more like it. Perhaps now we'll see the Xbox strutting its stuff. Btw, do you reckon it would allow me to leave Edinburgh and drive up the A9 to where I live? hehe.

Good to see the cars aren't total mirrors, as is the case with Sega GT2002. Scenary is looking fractionally sparse at the moment though, it all looks a bit clean, if you know what I mean.

    Impressive stuff, though.
  • otto #9 10 years ago

Wow, featuring all of Edinburgh's top attractions eh? ;)

Before you Scots get too carried away, just think: thousands of American xboxen owners will be asking each other, "where tha hell's Edin-BERG?"
  • Super Stu #10 10 years ago

Yeah but who gives a shit. I could find my way home from those signposts :)

  • Alastair #13 10 years ago

Hope you get the chance to whizz through the Grassmarket and up Victoria St. Or down the Cowgate...
  • Super Stu #14 10 years ago

Guys, was just speaking to someone who doesn't live too far from these shots and used to catch a bus near the signpost in that first one. He says it's pretty damn accurate, save for some traffic lights and crossing removed.
  • Nemesis #15 10 years ago

Well, this is Bizzare after all; they are a wee bit @nal about the details.
  • Alastair #16 10 years ago

    And where is said signpost?
Memories of precise geography of Edin. are fading....
  • UncleLou #17 10 years ago

The building in screenshot 1 looks impressively high-poly, or is there some optical trick involved?
  • Super Stu #18 10 years ago

Alastair - taken from a thead on NTSC-UK...

Mr Dark Pretty looking forward to driving past my house in the Edinburgh in PGR2

NickG Mr Dark,I reckon the 2nd and 3rd shots of PGR is of the side of the caledonian on lothian road, taken from the bus stop where I used to wait for my uni bus a long time ago, amazing detail. Am I right?

MrDark Yep! You can see the Usher Hall from one of the screen shots. They also cut out a lot of the pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.
  • Alastair #19 10 years ago

    Super Stu
    Of course! :o)
I used to live on Morrison St, and so would walk in to Grassmarket this way to meet my chums who lived in Grindlay St (down the side of Usher Hall).

Wow, the first XBox game to actually tempt me!
  • Gestalt #20 10 years ago

"The building in screenshot 1 looks impressively high-poly, or is there some optical trick involved"

As in the first game, most of it's just texturing, although it does look like they're throwing more polys around this time. AFAICS the windows and air conditioners, for example, are just photos slapped on to a flat surface, but the columns on the side of the building are real (if fairly square looking) polygonal architecture.
  • Super Stu #21 10 years ago

Alastair.. innit. It makes you wonder how accurate the various tracks are on MSR and PGR, as I've never visited any of those locations myself.

Anyway, the Xbox purchase can wait until Christmas, when everyone will hopefully do their normal good deals/cheap bundles.

And, er, a 1 wire X-ecutor from Lik Sang :)
  • Alastair #22 10 years ago

'It makes you wonder how accurate the various tracks are on MSR and PGR'
Played MSR on Dreamcast and the central London stuff felt pretty accurate, except for that fact that the roads weren't clogged up and there was no imminent congestion charging!
    :o)
  • otto #23 10 years ago

Anyone want to lay any bets on how far into the future we'll have to wait until PGR's nth sequel plugs into your Galileo receiver (GPS is just so 20th century) and lets you race in your home town, wherever that might be?
  • Super Stu #24 10 years ago

Well, I plugged my mates into mine to auto configure my Astronomy software. Dunno about PGR ;)
  • ssuellid #25 10 years ago

'It makes you wonder how accurate the various tracks are on MSR and PGR' -

The London tracks are very accurate - a few shop names have been changed. The telephone boxes and post boxes are all in the correct places. When I first got MSR my housemates spent weeks remembering which post box they had thrown up in etc.
  • Alastair #26 10 years ago

Do you think the 10 day return policy at Game extends to buying the console as well?
Could be worth taking a week off work to play it solidly then take it back!
  • Merefield #27 10 years ago

More Americans will get the chance to say:

"Edinburgh's Cooool...Look how close they built the Castle to the Shops!"

    Sorry, old one...
  • Sonics_Idiot_Brother #28 10 years ago

Edinburgh should be great to drive in.

Shame the 911 is canary yellow though.
  • Whizzo #29 10 years ago

Do you think the 10 day return policy at Game extends to buying the console as well?
Having had my Game statement today with a catalogue the only thing it states that aren't covered by the 10 day return policy is magazines.
  • Merefield #30 10 years ago

But will PGR 2 simulate the meagre four hours ;) of Edinburgh sunlight in winter...

And will I be able to pop into any pub and drink until 3am...

Great choice of City, tho ... Ah, student days....
  • Super Stu #31 10 years ago

Do they sell blondes, out of interest?
  • Alastair #32 10 years ago

'Having had my Game statement today with a catalogue the only thing it states that aren't covered by the 10 day return policy is magazines.'

    Ooohh, tempting!
Unless I can find someone who's got one that I can borrow while they go on holiday or something. Actually I've got someone in mind, but I don't know him all that well. Still, I've got a year to cultivate the friendship!
    :o)
  • Pirotic #33 10 years ago

got my Game thing today too, only racked up £7.50 this time. thats £7.50 off resident evil i suppose but i remember getting £25 voucher last time :(
  • Nemesis #34 10 years ago

Good old Game gave me a 35 quid voucher in the post! What a frickin' shame there's nothing to spend it on.

    /twiddles thumbs/

35 quid voucher in the post!
35 quid! Bloody hell someone's been spending a lot in Game, I'm pretty happy with a fiver off now and again. I tend to buy from them online and you can't use them there which is understandable if a pain.
Oh well Wolfenstein Special Edition for £15 seems reasonable to me.
  • Super Stu #38 10 years ago

    Everything to he who waits.

I'm more of a "pick it up after 4 months for next to nowt on Ebay" type person, these days. It's the only way I can survive the wrath of the missus.

    Now, here's a worrying question....

How many of you, during your time of playing games, have turned down s*x so they can finish a level?
    Edited by 1 at 09/08/02 @ 15:57
  • otto #42 10 years ago

Well, I've often turned down an invitation to come to bed "so you can massage my feet" to finish a level...

    *shudders*

I get to hear things like 'I'm off to wash up, so you can play on your game'

You're joking?? Wow, no wonder you're marrying her! ;)
    Edited by 1 at 09/08/02 @ 16:02
  • st3ph3n #43 10 years ago

Anyone with Edi knowledge picture this. Where George IV crosses high street would be a prime place to get airborne before sliding the 911 past the Bank of Scotland, round past the wash (where I got horrendously drunk on my 21st), before a tight hand brake turn down towards the station.

Only problem is, if you get a car like yours and start throwing it about in the game you might be tempted in real life. I can picture it now.
  • Nemesis #44 10 years ago

Yeah, the foot thing, you know, I'd rather play something horrid on a DVD Interactive Format (TM) than massage someone's stinky hard-skinned feet.
  • Razz #45 10 years ago

"How many of you, during your time of playing games, have turned down s*x so they can finish a level?"

LOL!! I've stopped once or twice in the middle of sex to change the vis in winamp.

    -Razz
  • Nemesis #47 10 years ago

Actually, on the subject of feet, one of the blokes admitted to a really extreme foot fetish. One of those bloke type conversations had started at lunch and we got around to what you noticed first on a woman. The usual trend of eyes, legs, bumps, the usual and one bloke says "Feet. I always look at feet first. If they have dainty feet I'm sold".

and then he told us something I wish he hadn't

'How many of you, during your time of playing games, have turned down s*x so they can finish a level?'

Don't know that I've turned it down directly, but I've certainly spent many Friday and Sturday nights up late playing.....

'You're joking?? Wow, no wonder you're marrying her! ;)'

Jealous? Hoho! I do also get nagged for *still* not having finished the bathroom ceiling and floor though.
    :o)

'Where George IV crosses high street would be a prime place to get airborne before sliding the 911 past the Bank of Scotland'
Yeah, it could be linked with my previous suggestion of Grassmarket followed by whizzing up Victoria Street.
The Wash - think it was called Oblomovs in my day....if we're thinking of the same place.
  • UncleLou #49 10 years ago

You guys are sick! Get a life! And about the massage: Just remember Pulp Fiction!

  • Alastair #51 10 years ago

'True history: I bought Dreamcast's, for one week and took them back so many times to EB that I got vouchers enough on your statement to actually buy one and two games. '

Interestingly (or not), when I got my new GAME card to replace my EB one, it mentioned that the above practice would not work. If you take back a game you earned points on, they'll remove those points from your account.

  • DocX #53 10 years ago

My missus is the opposite - there are some games she positively encourages me to play, particularly stuff with a story & cut scenes. She finds it relaxing just watching em. Bit of a backseat driver too: "I told you to go left & jump over it", that type of thing. So in our household its more likely "Pleeease put on Final Fantasy"..."Not now love, I've got a headache."
  • jaa #54 10 years ago

    Notice how silent jaa is?

    heh

Well, otto, you should know that, after that visit to EG a couple of days ago, my wife has a theory about you.
  • Nemesis #55 10 years ago

    O ho, what's the theory?
  • Razz #56 10 years ago

"My missus is the opposite - there are some games she positively encourages me to play, particularly stuff with a story & cut scenes. She finds it relaxing just watching em. Mine was like that with "Outcast" and "Giants". Positively loved the games, sometimes she would rather watch me play than watch Corrie! Amazing!

  • jaa #59 10 years ago

She says otto isn't real. otto is in reality Gestalt or someone from EG. They use him to keep threads alive. No one real could possibly post as much as he does and still have a job and a family. That's what she says... and it kind of makes sense...

    edit: called you 'it'. Sorry.

Cool, Otto. You've become a conspiracy theory!
  • Alastair #63 10 years ago

Gamesb*tch - fair enough, might get to keep the points when I take XBox back after playing PGR2 then... :o)

Otto, you've made it onto the staff list at EG!
    We're all so proud.
  • Alastair #64 10 years ago

'has anyone seen me and Gestalt in the same room at the same time'

Has anyone seen either of you at all? Except those obviously faked up pictures of you with your daughter and Gestalt supposedly at the EG Christmas party or something.

Now that we've found out, I bet "otto" will soon decide to migrate to New Zealand, and a few days later, a new guy with a name like "fritz" or "karl" will start posting here excessively. Or this thread will be zapped and we all get killed.

I gave a speech there last year.
"Good evening everyone, today I will be outlining a proposal for a new propaganda programme entitled "Project Eurogamer". This project will involve the indoctrination of gamers worldwide in the intricacies of the European Union, dispelling myths about our great organisation, the drinking of vast amounts of coffee and the playing of games while sitting on the loo. While this may seem a waste of resources and unproductive I will respond with three letters : CAP....."

I'm still uploading the shots but the gallery has output with a new timestamp anyway, so please hold off the sarcasm for a little while :)
  • Zero Beat #114 9 years ago

Hahah, we'll let you off this time ;)
  • krudster #115 9 years ago

Pretty bloody impressive new shots, i'd wager.
  • Zero Beat #116 9 years ago

Showroom shots! Are these exclusive shots Mr Krud, they're damn impressive new ones nonetheless.
  • Zero Beat #117 9 years ago

I bloody hate high res screenshots though, not only are they difficult to view, even at 1280x1024 but they show up imperfections in the graphics that you wont likely aknowledge on your tv. 800x600 is the highest reasonable screenshot res for a console game I think, unless it's been specifically designed for 1080i like Dragons Lair. Rant over!

If we're not careful this is the next Driver 3 thread, and I ain't having the goodness of this destroyed.
  • ObiJo #121 9 years ago

Yes, lets not make this a competition to beat the irrelevence of most of the Driver 3 thread, which is improving now i think.
  • bluebird #122 9 years ago

Very nice car models, but these obviously aren't X-box shots but PC devkit screenshots. It's kinda cheating. How about them letting us see some shots of how it will really look?

    /logon: donitard82 pass:***

Why are there no motorbikes in any screenshots? This game will suck without bikes.

    /logoff
    /end of line

"" Before you Scots get too carried away, just think: thousands of American xboxen owners will be asking each other, "where tha hell's Edin-BERG?" "

Honestly, and I know i'm insulting myself as well, but I have never heard of said city/town/shopping center, whatever it is. Thus I agree with Otto. Thousands of Americans are going to complain to Microsoft about "making cities up".

Well BGiE, ask the 4% of Americans that have passports, they all come and stay here during the festival, and we charge them a months rent for one week self catering, LOL, dumb yanks .......... Gee honey, were in Scotchland, aint it quaint. ;P
Whenever I have been in America, when I say I live in Scotland, the automatic reply is "Gee I have an Uncle in Scotchland....[insert name]....do you know him?", to which I reply, "Oh, yeah he lives in the Castle next door to me, can't visit him until the sabre tooth tiger breeding season is over" ....
    American - "Golly Gosh"
Honestly...... I've lived in houses older than the American country.

Heh, Edinburgh during the festival, I never heard a single Scots accent except from behind a store counter or bar.
  • cynic #126 9 years ago

Mostly Aussies behind the bar in Edinburgh, in fact anywhere you go in the world there will be an aussie behind the bar (usually a few in front of it too :P)
Is Australia some sort of international temping agency for bar staff?

And Edinburgh in the Festival, its just finnished so Edinburgh is relatively quiet at the mo (i.e. you can actually walk on the pavement) but the students are just about to come back :(

"This game rocks like 700,000,000,000,000,0000 watt game it's thebest."

lol, he measures how much things rock with wattage.
  • chronom4n #130 8 years ago

everything about PGR2 is spot on EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. and i am really vexed off about this... and it is the fact that is in not possible to save your time trials as replays and watch them back.. gt1, gt2,gt3 and gt4 all do this. imagine pulling off the ultimate poweslide in a porsche 993 or ferrari 360 challenge stradale on capitol thrill' washington dc, the bit with the awesome jump along the straight and where it kinks abit to the left. in time trial mode and not being able watch it. so what is the point of having beautiful cars/scenery if i can't watch my replays. they (bizzare creations) shot themselves in the foot big time in my opinion.
  • Aga #131 8 years ago

WoodenSpoon, you need lots of watt to play really loud rock...
