Would have been nice with something a bit more varied and horror-ish. Like "Monster Inc." minus the cuteness.

From both a technical and atmospheric point of view this game really delivers. The moment you leave your tiny camp and see your first vista I guarantee you'll be checking to make sure it's only your PS2 running the game. :)
The sense of ongoing ecology and random life cycles Mhunter conjures is utterly convincing....from the grazing herbivores, wandering boars and bizzare Cat race miaowing about their dailly business in the marshes (who occasionally mug you for items) to the randomly perching lethal dragon who flies over the huge landscapes, sometimes coming to rest in the most unexpected of iddylic zones.
I'm currently at the beginning of the third suite of offline quests, with the 'urgent' quest of hunting and killing the King Blue Velocidrome...a kind of 'Raptor-a-like. God, it's a toughy!
Armed with my 12 foot (I kid ye not) cumbersome iron sword, a couple of timed barrel grenades, a few monster-blinding flash bombs, and a few evasive moves and health-ups, you have to keep the head 'Drome's lackies at bay, while damaging the leader, all the while making sure he doesn't slip away to another zone where he'll heal to 100% in an instant...meaning all your work was for nought. Terrific real time gamepad-breaking fun!
The excellent real time combat dynamic is offset against the game's beardy RPG side-quests, like herb/ berry gathering, fishing (beautifully tranquil and superbly realised)/ cooking and general atmospheric exploration...Oh yes, and all the weapon/ armour buying/ selling / upgrading. The game shifts gears through all the moods and gameplay styles utterly seamlessly, and links it all together with a really refreshing sense of humour (cat people who speed your unconscious body on cart-back only to dump you unceremoniously back at camp, and a comical running animation from your character when spotted by a boss saurus...for example).
The bizzare mix of mythical/ prehistoric/ sci-fi/ sword & sorcery makes for one of the most captivating game worlds I've wandered around in a long time. I'm almost cussing HL2's arrival next week, because obviously Mhunter is going to have to be shelved out of respect...
As a sign of how much I rate it I'll be buying it AGAIN on its April 2005 PAL release, because I quite simply HAVE to take this game online!
