Own it for the 360 but would prefer to play it through again on a PC, assuming it doesn't have the loading and texture popping issues
  • towser #2 4 years ago

Playing the Xbox version at the moment. There are some very nasty bugs in this game! Popping in of textures all over the place and getting stuck where polys meet are two of my main gripes.

And dont get me started on the driving. Fuck me its worse than Big Rigs or whatever that game was called. What a waste of time! If they don't fix that for the PC release then they should be publicly flogged!

Anyhoo, story is engaging and combat is a bit meh. Too far in to quit now. Need to stuick with it to see how it ends.

:S thought the driving was pretty straight forward.

Texture popping was only my issue.

Anywho, good more folk will be able to enjoy one of biowares best.

I suspect I'll need a monster PC to run the game at my required 1680x1050 (I have a 22" widescreen monitor) with the game looking as good as it does on the 360 in terms of modelling, lighting and texture detail, far in excess of the console specs but that's always the case with PC games and it doesn't help that the UE3 itself is quite a resource hog.

Driving was pretty straight forward, although there were a few instances where some of the terrain was just way too steep! The texture popping is a glitch, not a bug. Never got caught in any scenery.

"The texture popping is a glitch"

To be honest, the amount I'm seeing it I would class it as a bug. It's very shoddy optimisation IMHO.

Have the 360 version, but just got new PC which will run this at my monitors max res (1440x900) with out much issue. If all the niggles (mainly texture popup) are fixed then I may very well hold out for the PC version of the other installments. Though it's going to have to make a noticeablt different for me to move from sofa and large HDTV to office chair and 19" monitor!
  • Darren #8 4 years ago

@towser - I agree with you. All it would take to mask the texture pop in is to show the loading screen for a second or two longer while the engine drew them in in the background. Looks very shoddy when you can see them being filled in.

Hm, I respectfully disagree. The UT3 demo and Gears of War were flying on my PC at the highest settings, native res, with really everything enabled that there is to enable. I don't like the look of many UE3 engine games a lot, but I'd be hardpressed to name a more effective engine.

@towser don't bad mouth big rigs it's responsible for the funniest video review on gamespot in history.
  • LeD #11 4 years ago

I can't wait to see that scene again where Liara masturbates with wanton abandon, in higher res.

    Big Rigs was a classic.
  • Velios #14 4 years ago

Well I totally BUM Mass Effect. It was one of my favourite games so far this year!

The PC version looks cool, and I recommend this to anyone that enjoys Bioware's type of RPG's. I'll probably be downloading the extra content for XBOX this weekend too just to squeeze a little more enjoyment from the game.
  • asphaltcowboy #15 4 years ago

@everybodyknowsadave - it was possible to switch the film grain off on the 360 (and rightly so - it looked much better with it off!)
  • Agent_Llama #16 4 years ago

Mass Effect is super, apart from the occasional freezes, and that HIDEOUS inventory system. WHY can't they release a patch to change it - it's bloody awful, and nigh on the worst I've ever encountered in any RPG, with D&D Tactics the only one worse.
  • iWolf #17 4 years ago

We need Spec requirements ASAP Bioware!

Mass effect 360 : Requires cheap 360 to run
Mass effect PC : Requires 1 grand pc to run, just for the privilege of not having texture popup.

I'm sure it's worth the extra money
  • Gaol #20 4 years ago

Lot of tosh abourt needing a 'one grand' pc to play this. PC hardware is cheaper than ever, and is already two generations ahead of the 360/ps3. £500 quid would do it with all bells and whistles, and I'm sure it could be done cheaper if you tryed hard enough.

Exactly. People really feel the need to exaggerate when it comes to PC specs. I bought my PC over a year ago and it's cost me far less overall than HD gaming on my 360. The price of the games and peripherals (not to mention the HDTV) really push the price up over time. It also happens to run cross platform games much better than the 360/PS3 versions (better graphics, better frame rate and in most cases better controls).
  • darkphoenix #22 4 years ago

    Yes.

    Consoles are shit.

PC is the future of gaming.

    ....right.
  • gallow #23 4 years ago

So what is the average playtime?
  • login_name #24 4 years ago

    @darkphoenix

Nope, they're both viable gaming platforms and any serious gamer would have access to both.
  • Siberian_Khatru #25 4 years ago

ME is exceptionally polished for an RPG. Best fun I've had this generation, unexpected depth, some truly unforgettable moments.

PC gamers are used to playing games that are bugged to death so they won't mind some minor pop-up. I'm sure it'll be a hit, million of downloads at the very least.
  • Zoink #26 4 years ago

1k PC? Just bought a prebuilt box from Komplett for £400 (2.4G dual core, 2gb mem, 500gb disk), added a 9600GT and 22" SM226BW, total was £750. Could have saved a few quid if I had built it myself or gone for cheaper mobo.

    Oh, the bitterness. Funny.

Though it's going to have to make a noticeablt different for me to move from sofa and large HDTV to office chair and 19" monitor!

Connect your computer to the TV then. And buy a receiver for Windows for your 360-controllers. Easy.

I play many games on my PC, slouching on the couch.

Mass effect PC : Requires 1 grand pc to run, just for the privilege of not having texture popup.

If it's optimized for the platform, no. Nowadays, you'll get a PC that greatly trumps the 360 in terms of speed for about 500€. This has been discussed and proven all too many times for it to be news for anyone; quit living in two years ago.

Oh, and there were more improvements than just texture popin. Framerates, UI and inventory for example.
