    Someone's been watching LoTr :D
  • Sid-Nice #2 8 years ago

I don't think LOTR has influenced these pic's in any way, the pictures are basically OOT given a Gamecube upgrade as is the Zelda video.
  • Zero Beat #3 8 years ago

Great characters but blurry, somewhat flat environments, hopefully that's work in progress. Certainly nowhere near the quality of the Spaceworld demo BUT it's Zelda!
  • Daryoon #4 8 years ago

What -isn't- inspired by LotR these days? You can barely show a sword without someone screaming "LotR RIP OFF!"
  • KraftWerk #5 8 years ago

You see from the look in Link's eyes that this game will be worth the price.
  • Blerk #6 8 years ago

Looks a lot better in motion than it does in the screenies - see the video if you can. However.... compared to Wind Waker it's all so 'lifeless'. Sigh.

That said.... it's Zelda. It will be good, nay excellent. And I will get it.

Most good looking GC games are blurry. Should be use to that by now :)

    Lotr Ripoff!

    The video screams of Balrog!

  • otto #10 8 years ago

This is such a disappointment to me. Wind Waker was such a glorious piece of visual design. Now they've gone all cod-fantasy. What are Nintendo thinking?? Are they testing the waters to prepare for the day when they only make games for Xbox??
  • Nemesis #11 8 years ago

Otto, relax mate. Wait until you play the damn thing! Have they ever let us down with the Zelda games? It'll be fine. Relax. Eat pastries.
  • otto #12 8 years ago

Yeah but the graphics were the best thing about Zelda by far, for me! /sniff

  • Tiitiz #13 8 years ago

Have they ever let us down with the Zelda games?

Let me down with the cell shading in WW. So, yes, they did let one person down o.0
  • binky #14 8 years ago

im loving the dark look of this, but that said, its a shame they've gone away from WW.
  • MBar #15 8 years ago

    LOTR

oh, shut up. you do realise ocarina had a big nasty fire lizard demon thing too, don't you?
  • killerbob #16 8 years ago

hahah.. this is windwaker all over again..
"oh, but i don't like the graphics.."
shut up, and wait until you play the game!
i'll bet it'll grab you by the balls and never let go,
the second you turn it on.. mark my words..
  • Daryoon #17 8 years ago

    * Balrog firey guy with (chain) whip,
    * Epic confrontational battle scene,
    * Beast back riding enemies (virtually the same IMHO)

Because everyone knows LotR owns the copyright on those standard fantasy set-ups.
  • mal #18 8 years ago

I'd like to think they decided they wanted to make a darker game, so they had to go for a more semi-real look, but it's more likely that they decided to do a darker game because everyone moaned about the previous un-real look.
  • HarryB #19 8 years ago

I like it, I may pick up a cheap gamecube before it dies and play games like this - a nice adventure

not played one since the N64 days
  • Kami #20 8 years ago

In motion, this title looks amazing!

LOTR rip-off? Puh-lease... aside the better visuals, this looks and feels like Zelda through and through... The LotR games can NEVER compare to Zelda. They just can't. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

And once again, people are moaning... FFS PEOPLE! GET A GRIP! You moan about Wind Waker being too "toon". Now this is too "dark"... again, FFS Get a GRIP! I think it looks absolutely sublime and I can't wait to see more of it...

And when I say see more... I mean these key points:

    * Will it have an ocarina?
    * What will it's subtitle be?
    * Who's the bad guy? Is Ganondorf back again?
    * What's Zelda look like?
    * And does it offer anything more than a new combat system? Underwater combat? Improved spells?

It's going to sell. OoT did more than sell, it flew off the shelves... and this game, with it's more grown-up look, darker feel and incredible fights from the videos, should in theory equal that...

It looks magical... I remember seeing OoT for the first time and tingling with excitement. This one nearly brought me to tears of joy... Nintendo... all is forgiven...

    *looks at Virtual Boy*

    Well... nearly everything...
  • Blerk #21 8 years ago

You moan about Wind Waker being too "toon".

    I never! I always loved it. :-)
  • bungalooBunny #22 8 years ago

That screenshot on the horse in the forest looks like an attempt to mimic Ico.. what were they thinking.

It's all very LOTR as people said, but not that it's a bad thing. I'll get it anyways.
  • Trowel #23 8 years ago

Hey, those gutted this isn't in the same vein as Wind Waker need only remember that this is just another tech demo Nintendo have knocked up to get the shiny mature boys excited a la E3 2002; us fanboyz know they'll actually unveil "Wind Waker 2: Tom & Jerry's Adventure's in Hyrule" later on in the year...
  • Kami #24 8 years ago

Blerk, I didn't mean you, I meant YOU as a generalised demographic of gamers. (Which is probably wrong to do so but I think it needs to be said)

People whinged that Wind Waker was too kiddy. Bigger fool them, while I admit it was the easiest of any Zelda game I've played and wasn't as revolutionary as we expected bar the graphics... it is still Zelda. It plays like a Zelda game. I FEELS like a Zelda game, and it has that magic...

So, from people moaning Zelda WW was too kiddy, to people moaning this one looks too grown up... again, FFS THIS IS STUPID!!!

People moan Nintendo have a kiddy image - what happens when they DO release a mature looking game with amazing graphics? Yup, you guessed it, I hear people whinge and moan and whine and complain and bitch and just grumble constantly that it's not what they asked for!

Yeah, a lot of us are insanely happy... but theres still a healthy chunk out there who aren't excited about a new Zelda game...

Some people are never ******** happy... are they?
  • Randy Eastman #25 8 years ago

Hyrule was here long before the LOTR movies or games those of us who have played Ocarina of Time, can see the resemblance. This just looks like an adult OOT upgrade if the story follows on from that then I can't wait.
  • Scimarad #26 8 years ago

    Aside from the Balrog guy...
  • Blerk #27 8 years ago

Yeah, a lot of us are insanely happy... but theres still a healthy chunk out there who aren't excited about a new Zelda game...

I'm disappointed that they didn't stick to the style that I loved, but hey - it's Zelda. Barring a balls-up of phenomenal proportions it's going to be ace. :-)
  • Kami #28 8 years ago

"hey - it's Zelda. Barring a balls-up of phenomenal proportions it's going to be ace. :-)"

Oh yes, completely agree with ya there Blerk.
  • ruttyboy #29 8 years ago

Ripping off Ico? LOL! How long is Ico on a horse for? Must be about 1-2 minutes max in the whole game... Link has a horse, he lives in a world with forests, he travels a lot, sooner or later he's going to end up riding through one. It has pretty graphics, so it must be ripping off Ico. Are they supposed to make it look really bad so they don't? I just really don't understand that comment...
  • eviltobz  #30 8 years ago

the first thing i thought on seeing that screeny was "ooooh, ico." its not about the horse or the forest, but the way that it's lit, not that its a bad thing to look like the most beautiful game i've seen.
  • ruttyboy #31 8 years ago

Yeah sure, but they're not trying to rip off Ico are they, it just looks similar as you say because of its beauty.
  • ruttyboy #32 8 years ago

    You read a book? Really?
  • Kami #33 8 years ago

But Squall, point is, Zelda is older than the FILMS, right?

I read the LOTR trilogy when I was at school - waaaaay before the films as we know them (IMO, first film nice, second film poopsmithing, third film marginally better but even then).

Everyone know thinks these classic games are ripping off the movies. Fact is, they're not. OOT was before LOTR films - was THAT ripping off LOTR?

In other words, just because they share common themes, doesn't mean they rip each other off... I mean, in a fantasy setting fire monsters, horseback riding and swordplay against hoardes of enemies are - to me anyway - standard issue material. Difference is, LOTR focuses on the seperate journeys of seperate groups, and is a beautifully told story. Zelda focuses on the cliche Save Princess Zelda and Hyrule theme, and Link is your main character. And Zelda is (usually) a beautifully crafted GAME.

Which is ironic. LOTR is a good film, but so far has made lousy game material. Zelda is a classic game which has nearly always done things right, but I can't see it being a film myself... Zelda relies on interaction and in a film I think that would be lost.

So, LOTR rip-off Zelda ain't. Anyone who thinks that really needs to go back and realise OOT did some of these things way before we knew of a LOTR film...

Not that I believe in such things lightly... but sometimes, things really are merely "coincidences"...

Nope! Must've missed it. Linkaroonie if it's in game footage, don't bother if it's not.

    Peej
  • Blerk #38 8 years ago

Linkaroonie. There's some in-game footage there - enough to see for sure that it's based on the Wind Waker engine, anyways.
  • pjmaybe #39 8 years ago

Cheers Blerk. Looks mighty fine, some very weird nods to Ico in some of the graphical "looks" there.

  • Aristagon #40 8 years ago

Certainly nowhere near the quality of the Spaceworld demo BUT it's Zelda!
You should dig up a link somewhere for "that" Spaceworld demo, because this looks a lot better then that techdemo.
  • WoodenSpoon #41 8 years ago

Who gives a fuck if some scenes look like LoTR!?
  • OnlyMe #42 8 years ago

If you say it's a LOTR: the books ripoff, I'd laugh in your face, 'cause the world of LOTR was only in our minds before any form of films startet to surface. I don't think anyone could have foreseen how LOTR the movies would look like before they were made (well, except from the visionaries that made the film ofcourse). The LOTR we know today is not even close to the LOTR we knew before the films came out. So basically, I don't think anything could have been a ripoff of LOTR BEFORE the films came out, and Zelda is definately still not a ripoff of LOTR, even if it has some similarities. Zelda is Zelda, nothing comes close to the genuity of Zelda. It's the best, it's the original, just like Coca Cola.
  • Blerk #43 8 years ago

Which one's the new shot, then?
  • Roarer #44 8 years ago

Actually, the three last ones are new.

Hey EG, how about putting some dates on the new screenshots? Or at least a line separating the old ones from the new ones?
  • dadrester #45 8 years ago

yeah. and as everyone has said before. what about next and previous buttons. hmpf!

anyway as for the cell shaded V's slightly more realistic look.... i loved OOT's graphics and i loved WW's graphics. the video for this one looked fantastic and the graphics look marvelous. i also like the graphics in four sword adventures on gc. why not just enjoy the range that we've been offered instead of moaning that it doesn't look like the last one. if we did that it'd end up looking like this.
  • dadrester #46 8 years ago

oh and as for LOTR. i reckon there is definitely an influence there, but why not. it doesn't take any credibility away from the zelda franchise, and it's not as if it's a bad thing either. i know if i were an artist or were setting the camera up for a certain cutscene i'd use reference material. since zelda and lotr are both set in mythological worlds and share other traits wouldn't it make sense to look at one of the most popular films in recent years for inspiration. it's not like zelda won't be unique in it's own special zelda kind of way
    /ahhh zelda
/looks at pictures and video again
    /wanks
  • Liggur #47 8 years ago

I like the new look for this Zelda, however, I dont think that Link looks right. He is a much too Cartoony character, with his floppy hat, to be in a game with realistic graphics.

I love the Toon Style of Wind Waker, which I think suits Link better than this one.

Link of the Rings, it definatly looks like to me.
  • MaTTy_P #48 8 years ago

jeeeesus w h smith. All this lotr moaning and groaning. Allthough in some respects people are right about the comparisons with the films being highlighted in zelda, it is true zelda and its influences came out before the films, but not before the books. ANY fantasy series (set in the past especially) has lotr influences, such as warhammer (geekahhoy), baldurs gate, diablo even. etc.

So less complaining about LOTR style stuff, jees. Everything is influenced by some past form of writing/historical/mythical content, even games/books/films have some reference/influence by things that have been done/seen/heard/read before. Get over it and get on with it.
  • Mr Richard #49 8 years ago

I do believe this is too little, too late. So here we have yet another Zelda title, after the beefed up Gamefests that were GTA:SA and Halo2. I love a bit of Zelda, me. I do. I really do. I lapped up Windwaker like a hungry cel shaded cat but there's only so many times I can 'lock on to my enemies and pivot around them while hitting them with a short, or long, sword, a bow and arrow, possible a grapple hook and a boomerang'. Oh look! Another bloody dungeon! Another six hour labyrinth of repetitive, decrepit Nintendo gaming reworked, again.
  • tengu #50 8 years ago

    No pleasing some folk...

This looks like pure Zelda pr0n from where I'm sitting. Now if only there was a bastard release date already!
  • Dagon #51 8 years ago

2005 should be all you need to know so far, eh?
  • tengu #52 8 years ago

I need a bit more than that, I'm afraid!

Like does 2005 apply to europe, or just Japan? Can't come fast enough!
  • Blerk #53 8 years ago

They already announced 'second quarter 2005' for the US market, so it'll definitely be here next year. I think... Autumn.
  • tengu #54 8 years ago

Aaaaaawwww... I could be dead by then! Plus PS3 and Xbox2 will be out by then, so why would anyone want to bother with THIS?! :)

Seriously though, this game looks ACE! I can't wait!
  • Zero Beat #55 8 years ago

Have you seen my little Richard? He does like to go out for walkies during the night.

Then Nintendo release, what, half a dozen screen shots to whet our appetite. It's just not good enough.

Give us a release date. Tell us more about it. Do good things to us because we love you, Nintendo. We love you like our own wives, now take your clothes off and give us some!
  • Nikanoru #58 8 years ago

I don't care for more screenshots or details, they'll only provide spoilers anyway. I'll buy the game regardless. And so will all of you.

  • Azu87 #59 8 years ago

"Well, Zelda II was bollocks, and a friend of mine recently bought a 3D0, need I say more?"

First of all the Zelda game for 3DO wasn't made by Nintendo and Zelda II wasn't a bad game, it was just too hard IMO and that ruined the fun of playing a Zelda game
  • mal #60 8 years ago

OoT wouldn't have looked like this if they'd had the tech. Mainly because Jude Law wasn't a major star at the time they made OoT;)

  • Nikanoru #65 7 years ago

Are these new shots ones from the new trailer? Hmm, no in-game footage I see.

    ???

All looks very ingame to me.
  • mal #66 7 years ago

No, I mean 'in-game' as in non-cut scene. You know, with the legend telling you what the buttons do and maps and stuff. These shots are obviously not FMV.
  • Nikanoru #67 7 years ago

Hmm, you're right, the buttons, health bar, etc. aren't in these screens. They looks pretty much like what could be ingame camera angles though. Maybe there's an option to turn off the icons? I really hope so.
  • mal #68 7 years ago

Yeah, there's a handful of combat shots which are just about in classic over-the-shoulder orientation - but there's an equal number that aren't

I don't know, the angles don't look too out of the ordinary. There have been a fair few early screenshots where the camera angle and lighting game the games look extraordinary, but when the camera's confined to a more usual path, they're a lot less special. I don't suppose we'll have that problem here, but I'd still like to see a heart meter to be sure.
  • mal #69 7 years ago

But...she's his sister! Oh well, I suppose they're trying to appeal to an older audience with this. Should appeal to all those husband and wives/cousins in the mid-west.
  • Chtulie #70 7 years ago

Not so much too long as dragged out with that triforce hunt and the lacklustre wind temple.
In some respects it was actually too short as some dungeons had been cut out and reduced to fetch quests (like the third pearl, go here, woops, not there anymore, now go there, ah, can't get at it, best to go way back there then come back here).
  • bionutz #71 7 years ago
