    "OMG THAT LOOKS AMAZING"

is what i might have been saying if it wasn't for Half-Life 2, and the fact the Source engine piss's over carmacks effort from a great height.

normal mapping is nice, but you can still see its really low polygon underneath it all - and the design is so bland. maybe im spoilt by the vista's of HL2 but this looks very poor.

meh, I thought most of halflife 2 was very uninspired. Sure, you had the big building you saw in the distance, but the rest was just what we've seen before, designwise.

    And could get very angular.

Couldn't disagree more - design-wise, HL2 is a revelation, and miles, miles ahead of nearly anything else out there. One of the very few games where I think the medium might finally leave its puberty status and become a more "serious" form of entertainment.

I think Doom3 has a superior lighting model than HL2 but HL" was outdoors and very pretty also

Im well up for a bit more Doom - loved it - but as the reviewer said - its a one off experience

Take away the physics gun and all you're left with in HL2 is bee-line linearity in levels populated by average A.I. and a story with more padding than a drag queen's bra -- in the shape of those interminable driving sections. That's nearly 50% of the game pissed away driving along canals and roads.

Take away the physics gun in the DOOM 3 mission pack...I guess all you're left with is, erm...DOOM 3? :)

One of the pros of building a game to include a gimmick rather than revolve around one entirely.

It's funny, but the 'tech demo' accusations levelled at DOOM 3, while not entirely unfounded (but at least the tech is there to serve the atmosphere via graphics and sound) are just as valid when looking at HL2. If they'd found anymore contrived ways to include physics gun use in HL2's Source engine I'd have been genuinely in awe of their ingenuity, instead of just bored shitless.

    :)

    interminable driving sections

Missed the corridors, did you? With UncleLou on this, real state-of-the-art game that supercedes its own entertainment by hinting at joys to come.

    Missed the corridors?!

No, I just got them another way.

    :)

    "hinting at joys to come"

With you there. One day someone will craft something truly amazing with Source. As they will with DOOM 3's engine.
