PS2. Where did I read it this morning? Can't bloody remember... I'll look back over my history.

Anyway, from what I remember this is a PS2 game - Criterion said they're not working on next-gen stuff yet. It's not just 'Burnout 3' remixed, it's a whole new game. Apparently.

Wait a minute, I'll go look.

Ah... here. I should've guessed. 'tis in German, though.

    They say 'PS2 and Xbox'.

    Xbox and PS2, this one.

Its debut is set for E3.

Gah, that Blerk, he's so quick on the draw.

A rough translation from German but you should get the gist.. sounds like an update more than a brand new game:

"02.04.05 - In addition ones to the pictures of yesterday some new details follow to the running play Burnout 4 from Criterion from the ' Official PlayStation2 of magazines ' (the USA).

    - Burnout 4 should not be improved Burnout 3, on the contrary the developers want to invent the series of reason on new.
    - a version for the next console generation is not planned.
    - the diagram is to work more realistically. In Burnout 3 everything had the typical ' Arcade Look ': The sky was radiating blue, the houses pictorial. Now are the palette and lighting completely different, whereby all looks more realistic.
    - Alex Ward compares it with the star Wars films: If Burnout 3 ' Return Of the Jedi ', because Burnout is 4 ' The Empire Strikes back'.
    - with the Crash one experiments with new sound effects. So one wants to possibly mix animal cries or noises from horror films with the bursting of metal and fragments of glass.
    - the scenes in the play are to be called exactly the same like the original places in the reality.
    - makes from each place some photos for Criterion and examines whether it would fit perfectly in Burnout 4. However one copies no complete city, but takes some suitable ranges and integrates her into the Burnout distances.
    - running take place at eight different places, those in Europe, which the USA and Asia. Are confirmed Hong Kong, Rome, Detroit and Tokyo.
    - the team wants more explosions, to more possibilities ' to fight ' and more deformations insert.
    - in two minutes are enough for sequence of the play Crashs from many films like ' bad Boys 2 ' or ' star a Wars episode 1 ' (Pod running) were built. This assembly is possibly part it Trailers, which is shown shortly. - the runways are to be designed in such a way that they tempt aggressive driving. Thus some passages are intentionally more narrowly designed that the cars too close must come themselves and ram inevitably. There are to lead also more things on the roadway, those to a Crash can (lanterns, strassenschilder, etc.).
    - there are ramps, abbreviations and many more jump possibilities than before.
    - traffic is many closer. In addition come more contractor, against whom one drives at the same time.
    - one can ram other road users, without suffering thereby even a Crash. - the cars are sketched by genuine ' Car designers ': Lee whale clay/tone and Dan Walker worked already for Jaguar, Nissan, Peugeot and Ford. The vehicles are divided into the three categories Racers, Muscle Cars and Crash Cars.
    - the points, at which a car becomes bent and deforms with a Crash, were doubled at the models. Each car possesses individual construction units, which can fly off or distort themselves.
    - load times should be shorter than before, the camera perspectives (e.g. when implementing the Crashbreaker) improved."

I was looking forward to this until i read the "more opportunities to fight" part. Dammit, that's what ruined B3 for me. :(
I was hoping for a return to the Burnout 2 "actually have a race" game mechanic. damn.

Its not what Burnout 4 will offer that bothers me, its more what I'm praying it doesn't offer this time round.
Criterion are bound to release a brilliant and polished game, but I'll only be buying it if it ships without in-game advertising for EA products, and without the stupid DJ and dumbed-down "Rad" presentation.
If it ships with these features "In the game" (tm), I'll continue to stick with Burnout 2, thank you very much.

Don't you like DJ's dropping phat choonz? UR sO uNkOoL

    jellyhead & yautja: YES!

BO3 was completely ruined for me by the fucking horrific teenage yank shit tacked onto it by EA, and by the move away from actual racing (every time I think about it I start getting angry so excuse my language). Takedowns would be a fun ADDITIONAL mode, but it's not a racing game any more.

All I want (and it should be easy Criterion) is the BO2 gameplay mechanics with updated graphics.

I doubt I'll be buying this - it seems like everything I loved about the first two games is slowing being leeched from the series.

/rant mode off... taking deep breaths... slowly calming down. ;-)
  • og.loc #15 7 years ago

But the Xbox and PS2 have more than enough plain racers now. I love Burnout 3 because it's invented a new genre. May it continue in the same vein.
  • pjmaybe #16 7 years ago

Gee, wonder if they'll fix the LIVE implementation this time round.

  • magicpocket #17 7 years ago

Yeah bring back the Acclaim Burnout...
  • Razz #18 7 years ago

I hated the Burnout series before I played Burnout 3 at ECTS. I bought an Xbox just to play it when it was released. First thing I did was turn off the DJ and listen to my own music I had saved on the Xbox.
As I understand it, the PS2 (I dont have one) doesn't have this functionality... figures... the console is getting on a bit. Yes, I know the DJ can be turned off in the PS2 version and the PS2 lacks an internal hard drive.

Anyway, I hope they get rid of the crash mode in Burnout 4, and integrate Road Rage more into Race and Eliminator modes. And fix the lack of music playback in muliplayer.

Do you get to open your car door just as a cyclist is trying to squeeze past?
  • jellyhead #20 7 years ago

If the game could remember which custom soundtrack i was listening to last time i played and load that up when i start the game so that i don't have to spend the start of each session going through five menu's to change the stupid music back to the custom soundtrack that i was listening to last time i played then that would be nice thank you very much indeed.

in short - remember my settings and load them at startup. please.
