Squenix starts new mystery countdown News

DS News by Robert Purchese

31 July, 2009

Square Enix has made another mystery countdown website, which displays the text "VI DAYS" atop a down-ticking clock.

We'll check back in six days.

The last Square Enix countdown reveal was turn-based DS role-playing game The Four Warriors of Light: A Final Fantasy Anecdote.

That, the publisher announced yesterday, will be out in Japan on 29th October.

There are videos and and more of Four Warriors of Light over on the official website.

I like how it went up yesterday saying 'VII days' and the FF7 fans went BESERK!

Hehe. It seems countdowns are the in thing for game announcements at the moment.

I'd like to be FFVI. It won't be, but I'd like that.

This is such a brilliant marketing strategy. Let the hype build up to unrealistic expectations and then disappoint everyone with your actual announcement.

sheesh, talk about diluting the brand. the name Final Fantasy used to just be about big exciting releases. I REALISE that as times get harder there has to be an effort on SE's behalf to make money more easily, but this slew of spin offs etc is pretty tedious.

In fairness though, I don't think anyone can call any of the FF spin-offs "bad". None of them get low ratings on review aggregation sites anyways and the ones I've played have all been above average. So, sure, the FF brand is being diluting, but at least the spin-offs aren't all that bad and are actually excellent in some cases (Crisis Core, Tactics Advance, Dissidia).

@CitizenGeek

None of the FF games tend to get low ratings but, I suspect that has less to do with us gamers than with seriously dodgy review scores.

I know I haven't enjoyed any FF games for a long while now. In fact I can't stand random battles after playing the likes Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery etc. etc. I find that fighting 20 random battles while trying to walk 2 feet on a map screen just sucks the willpower and joy out of me.

If you make a viral site for EVERY announcement, that makes the countdown part of a regular announcement, not only for exciting extremely hyped announcement only, turning the viral marketing pointless, so why dont announce the game once and for all? Also, how can a remake of a game be hyped? Is a game you have already played, how can it dissapoint you?

And why am I writing about this if im not even interested on the game?!

@CitizenGeek : Played Dirge of Cerberus? A game all about Vincent had so much potential :(
