Square Enix reveals 360 release dates News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

10 June, 2008

Square Enix has listed a load of release dates at the Xbox 360 RPG Premiere event in Tokyo.

Star Ocean 4, or as it's officially titled Star Ocean: The Last Hope, will be released for Xbox 360 in 2009. There's been no mention of when, or indeed whether, it will turn up on other platforms.

Next up is Infinite Undiscovery, confirmed as a 360 exclusive and down for a European release on 5th September. The US will get it three days earlier while Japan will have to wait, for once. But not for long, as the game's out there on September 11th.

And finally there's Last Remnant. The game's in development for PS3 and Xbox 360, but will be released for Microsoft's console first. The 360 version is down for a global release this winter, with no word on how long PS3 owners will have to wait.

The 360 is actually *the* place to be for all game categories. No matter wich category you prefer the 360 has a lot of games in that category.

Seems like SE get their sales elsewhere? The DS is the place to make money on RPGs in Japan anyway.

Well if there is any way for MS to sell more 360s in Japan it must be RPGs, but I doubt that PS3/360 still have a chance in Japan. Traditional console gaming seems to be dead there.

>The 360 is actually *the* place to be for all game categories

Yea ok.. but JRPGs is a bit of a surprise ;) 360 already has 5 or more atm and 5 or so coming. Impressive.

Wouldn't be crazy if these new JRPGs magically turned around the 360s fortunes in Japan, kind of like Monster Hunter did with the PSP.

It'll never happen of course, but it would be funny.

YET, Japan will never give the console a chance ..... I still applaud MS for trying. I certainly cant ask for a better JRPG line up. Tales of Vasperia, Inifite Undiscovery, Last Remnant and then Star Ocean. Bloody hell, if FF makes it to the 360 - I may never have to buy the PS3

its unfortunate, but xbox will never take of in japan, and that is purely a cultural thing.

if you look at the following line up

Tales of Vesperia
Spectral Forces 3
Infinate Undiscovery
Last Remnant
Star Ocean
Blue Dragon 2 (well, it was big in the land of the rising sun)

Thats a killer line up for any system in the next 12 months, but i doubt it will make a dent.

For me, i don't know how i'm supposed to fit them, along with Age of Conan, and Warhammer online.

Personally, some fingers crossed for portage to PC or PS3.

Be interesting to see if Star Ocean 4 is any good. I played the 3rd one for a bit on the PS2, kinda got halfway through and lost the vibe for it.

Also, lets not forget that these announcements ALL COME FROM A MICROSOFT PRESS EVENT. So don't expect there to be any word about Sony or Nintendo product unless it can't be helped!

@Arbiter

Let's not forget that your comments all come from a Sony-centric mindset. If these JRPGs were listed for PS3 (Last Remnant is due later on PS3 - a problem the xbox had with PS2 getting games much sooner), you would be touting "see how diverse the PS3 game library is, my friend" :)

This stuff all looks great, but I can't see it changing the 360's fortunes in Japan.

Not least because the two biggest hitters - Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy - are going to Nintendo and Sony platforms respectively.

Not to turn this into a fanboy war but the PS3 has an equally impressive (if not moreso) list of upcoming JRPGs so claiming the 360 is "the place to be" for JRPGs is a little premature.

The PS3 doesn't have any JRPGs at present though, so for now, the 360 is definitely the place to be for said genre. In a few years time, that may change, or maybe it wont...

so a bit coy on yes/no for Star Ocean on the PS3, then again I doubt shouting about it surfacing on another platform at an event like would have gone done rather well.

I think most people will see that MS is working VERY hard to widen the software lineup of the 360. TBH it has one of the best software selections ever for such a young console. Every time some game comes to the 360 people are shouting "MS BOUGHT IT" (as if that is a bad thing). 360 has great games and is expanding every day into different types of software. The fact that the PS3 and 360 are fighting hard has been a good thing for gamers (and especially 360 owners). And to be truly a wide range console you need the "niche" products as well (like these JRPGs arguably). BTW a lot of the "succes" of the software lineup for 360 is not due to money hats but due to easy dev tools and very good dev support. Most of the devs I know have a 360 at home to play. Devs love the machine and MS is quietly laying a solid base for a long console future with many new generations to come (dev support).

Probability has nothing to do with it,PS3 is also on life-support in Japan,if they cared about sales in Japan Wii would be their target console. As for FF you are not going to see it until PS3 reaches 5-6 million in Japan,Square does not gamble,DQ is proof for that.

>You judge future opportunity based on past performance

Err.. yes and no ofc.

PS1 had no official chance against the others remember?

Also the 360 is already a pretty good success for MS. They do not need to reach that 100M landmark. They have gained almost all the devs and will probably reach 50M by the end of the cycle, breaking the dominance of Sony and largely increasing their share. Of course Sony and MS will have Nintendo to deal with next generation ;) since the Wii looks like the 100M boy this time.

Anyway.. the brilliant games selection on the 360 is a requirement for MS to gain market share. They have no Wiimote or Bluray so they are fighting it on software quality, online features and price (and dropped the ball on reliability sadly for them). So it is very logical that they are grabbing as many games as possible. I am a bit surprised that they haven't bought some of the big devs yet... maybe the games market is not *that* important to them anyway ;)

Lastly, one of the strongest features of the 360 is its software library which is NO DOUBT better than Ps3's right now (which isn't to say that the PS3 has a poor softwware library - its actually pretty good and improving all the time) . However, most of its big marquee titles (up to now) do not appeal to a mainstream buyer, there's a major lack of casual/family-orientated products and a surfeit of hardcore gamer orientated fare.

And that, is a "problem" when it comes to predictinhg future growth - by appealing so strongly to a relatively niche market MS are arguably ghetto-izsing the 360. And until they rectify this, Analysts will favor the broader (if arguably shallower) portfolios of Sony and Nintendo.

Getting worked up about there being no casual games on the 360 is like getting worked up that the latest V8 off-roader isn't "environmentally green" i.e. the people who buy them couldn't give a fuck, while those who do care about it should buy something else. I don't care if the granny down the road is convinced to buy a 360 because it's got MS Wii Sports or not as it doesn't affect me and what I like to play in the slightest.

The 360 has by far the best exclusives in its genres, and better versions of multi-format releases too, and since these are the genres that are important to me, that's all that matters. When I want to play Nintendogs or Cooking Mama I'll give the relevant Nintendo-badged console a spin.
