You judge future opportunity based on past performance.

Tell that to Atari, Nintendo, Sega and now Sony.

Things change. If they didn't then we'd all be speaking Latin now.

Just a quickie, I didn't realise sales of PS3 were bad in Japan and as I'm not sure if it's true i'll not comment on the ongoing battle. Did want to say that as Monster Hunter led to massive PSP sales (still inferior to DS but massive nonetheless) so couldn't these titles do the same for the 360? No idea if they're big enough IPs to achieve similar success, but nice to see Microsoft bringing the fight to Japan anyway. I think variety is always a bonus, and like an above poster says at least they're showing their ability to cater to a wider market.

Even if the Japanese resist this generation of Microsoft there's a good chance they'll come round next time if they see titles that cater to their interests, and I think that's important as this will encourage Japanese software developers to embrace the system too.

hmm well the cast majority of people who buy these machines dont come on the internet to bicker about who has made the right choice-theyll buy a ps3 cause they owned a ps2-not cause MS are gonna release some JRPGs that normal folk have never heard of before.

but whatever. good to see MS releasing a wide variety of games.

now whens Sonys FPS Presser?

Ugh I will need a 360 at this rate. JRPGs on a console with little Japanese installed base - you can't fault Microsoft for trying. PS3 is in desperate need of some RPGs - only one I've played this year is Mass Effect on PC :p

"isnt releasing jrpgs on 360 a gamble? i think so"
Of course, but it seems that releasing jrpgs on PS3 is even bigger gamble.

This gen is all about online shooters, lets kill everything that moves,RPGs in general will have hard time selling imo.
As you said aside from FF an DQ,JRPGs were not that popular in sales last gen(with 120mil PS2 userbase).

@Arbiter-''Do you actually read my posts?

If you don't, please refrain from passing comment from your pedastol of blissful ignorance.

If you do, which parts of what I wrote do you disagree with and why? ''

From having a quick skim over your comments on the MGS4 thread, I kind of disagree with the fact that you went on and on and on, about how basically, the reviewer's final opinion didn't match what your own expectataions of the title were (I say expectations because I'm guessing you hadn't actually played the title by that point) you went on about it so much so infact that EG's staff writers ended up replying to you.
And you kept bringing up the Online aspect of it, even though it had been explained why it had been left out, it was just all a tad bit immature, it wasn't the type of comments you'd expect from rational thinking grown up, y'know?
Which is why it's always kind of strange to see that you keep telling others on here to ''Grow up''.
Annnyway, I'm not going to argue about it, I'm just explaining my previous comment that's all.

So all the more reason to ramp up the development of that if they are capable of making such all-time classics!

In defense of Arbiter, even though I thoroughly disagreed with almost all of his points on the MGS4 thread, unlike most of the other people there he was at least making an effort to fit his thoughts into some kind of coherent argument. Something that you could actually have a discussion about, as opposed to the usual.

It doesn't matter that I think he was wrong, wrong, wrong on almost all points. It doesn't even matter if I think the logic he was using was extremely flawed. Whatever I think of the actual content it was presented in a way that made it at least possible to engage with it above the usual gutter-level, so he's really not the bad guy here.

"Also, lets not forget that these announcements ALL COME FROM A MICROSOFT PRESS EVENT. So don't expect there to be any word about Sony or Nintendo product unless it can't be helped!", says Arbiter.

@DJFlex52

Oh just grow up. Please.

@Arbiter

Pot - kettle - black, Arbiter.
The reason I even commented on your post is because what you stated was such an obvious attack (you even added caps) of MS on something so matter-of-fact. The point is that, OF COURSE, Microsoft wouldn't be mentioning if the RPGs are coming out on the PS3 or Wii....Duh! Neither has Sony or Nintendo mentioned MS at their press events. So why would you even bring that up in the first place? Immaturity on your part?

After the genre was almost completely unrepresented on the original Xbox, who would have thought the 360 would become the home of Japanese RPGS, certainly not me.

Is Microsoft throwing all sorts of money at Squeenix of late, or something? I mean, they're not getting FFXIII, but they seem to be pretty much cleaning up with everything else.

I've been into the PS3 for sometime now, I like the machine, the games and what's on the horizon but I agree with most of what Dizzy is saying.

Had the 360's reliability been better I probably would have stuck with it and not bought a PS3 as well. I also think that if they had produced a machine with rock solid reliability it would have been much harder for Sony to regain some ground after turning up a year late.

Generally speaking the 360 has better performance in the games, nicer looking, better online and loads of games... credit where it's due... MS is really pulling out all the stops... by the end of the year I hope they bring out a newer re-styled ---- re-engineered and better reliability XBox 360... if they do then I might just Jump back in.

I loved Star Ocean 3. Real time combat, no random encounters, and a decent story made it one of m favorites (even if the voice acting was sub par). I played through it twice. I will probably get this installment if they stick to what made 3 good.

But this news leaves me with a question: why the hell did I buy a PS3 again? (At least I can play FF XIII on it if/when it comes out - unless that goes multi-platform too.)

Eh? SO3 was all random encounters. You randomly encountered things and then got put into a 3D action battle grid.

Widge,

In SO3 the monsters were all wandering visibly on the map. You walked into them and entered the real time grid. Or you could avoid the monsters - although that would really shaft you on leveling. I though this was much better than the FFX and Shadow Hearts "random attack out of nowhere" system.

I'm wondering whether Square's strategy of releasing JRPGs on 360 first is a smart one. Perhaps they got a huge sack of money from MS but at this stage of the 360's life, I can't help but feel that this kind of support arrives too late. True, without putting stuff on 360 first, it would probably have sold even worse in Japan, but all the extra support hasn't made the 360 perform much better than the original xbox.

Apparently using third party exclusives as a means to sway people to a particular platform has lost much of it's effect. Which makes you wonder why platform holders (MS it seems in particular) keep pursuing this strategy. And the pay-off for the publisher for (timed) exclusivity must better be good, as it must outweigh both the loss in sales compared to releasing multiplatform as well as the negative effect it will have on growing the installed base of current gen consoles overall (so people not getting a 360 no matter what but also not getting a PS3 (or vice versa) for a game that's being perceived as old by the time it gets released on the next platform).
