Square Enix dates Valkyrie

Euro dates for Lenneth, Silmeria.

Square Enix has confirmed that Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria will be coming to Europe this year.

Those of you with a PSP can expect to get your hands on Lenneth on 27th April, whilst PS2 owners will have to wait until late summer for Silmeria.

The portable RPG puts you in the middle of the largest battle in Norse Mythology, between warring factions Aesir and Vanir. You, as valkyrie Lenneth, must venture to the mortal realm to seek out and train an army of fallen soldiers, appearing before the best and bravest humans at their moments of death, enrolling them on your godly side as Einherjar. However, there's naturally more to the story than meets the eye, and you soon start to discover things about yourself you didn't previously know.

We got our hands on it last year and found it to be a rare and original expression of Japanese role-playing individuality, and an absolute must for owners of the handheld. You can find our Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth review elsewhere on Eurogamer.

The PlayStation 2 offering, on the other hand, is even better still. The story takes place hundreds of years before Lenneth's, and focuses on valkyrie Silmeria, who was banished into a mortal body by the great god Odin. Normally dormant, she soon awakens in the Princess of Dipan's body, causing one host to share two souls, something Odin won't ignore for very long.

Even though it essentially builds on ideas laid out in the original Valkyrie game for PSOne, it was still a wonderful and fresh experience for us, and even more essential than its handheld counterpart. Adventure your way around Eurogamer to find our Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria review.

I love the way Silmeria uses 2D and makes it fresh. Best use of it since Abe's Oddyssee, I reckon.

Very late, but the games definitely sound intriguing to me. I really want a PSP now! I'll probably get the sequel for PS2 regardless.

As Blerk said, better late than never.
Silmeria is an absolutely gorgeous looking game and I cant wait to play it, having already gone through Lenneth on the PSP (yay for handhealds being region-free) which was one of the most compulsive RPG experiences I've had in many years.

Just the usual Squenix timelines then.

I know I'm not being a good European by saying this but can't Squenix release the English version first instead of having to bundle it (along with delay) with the other localised language versions?

EDIT: PS2 version, not PSP of course

Nice. I wasn't holding my breath for Silmeria and TBH I don't know all that much about it, but the fact alone it's from Squeenix has tickled my interested.

Can you guys eastimate how long it will take SE to release the PAL FF13 after JAP release? I guess it will be faster than this one. :)
  • Raziel #16 5 years ago

Wow, I actually gave up on a EU version of this a while back. Good to hear its still coming...

Stargazers - "Can you guys eastimate how long it will take SE to release the PAL FF13 after JAP release? I guess it will be faster than this one. :) "

Unless they pull their finger out of their arse, probably something ridiculous like 9 - 12 months.

To be fair though, a lot of japanese home console RPG's took that long to come over - that is if they ever came over at all.
I remember Dark Chronicle took about a year, Shadow Hearts 2 roughly the same, Rogue Galaxy looks to be more or less the same again, ditto for the likes of 'small fry' offerings like Suikoden V, Wild Arms 4, Stembot Chronicles/Bumpy Trot and so on and so on.
Dosent make things right of course, it just dosent make SE any worse.

Bought Lenneth a while back on import...wasnt really all that impressed with it to be honest.

May have been because of the time constrictions imposed whilst playing - I like to take my time and explore a bit in my RPG's.

Valkyrie Profile 2:Silmeria is great although it took quite a while to grow on me.

I totally agree with you there. Different Euro territories require diffferent advertising campaigns, so it would'nt be losing Square Enix any money. The UK (+Ireland) is the biggest market for games in Europe, anyway.
  • Azazel #22 5 years ago

omg I'd forgotten about Silmeria, can't wait for it now.

As far as I'm aware, no as they're on screen.

In fact, you can shoot the on screen enemies and they become platforms to help you reach higher ground too

Don't forget us Dutch, we don't get it translated to Dutch anyway, we could just get the english version as well...

Finally! I've bought and played the U.S. version but I'm getting this one, too. The game (Silmeria) is so good that it shouldn't be ignored by any JRPG fan.
