Spielberg talks up his games News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

10 July, 2007

Hollywood movie director Steven Spielberg has been filling in some details for his upcoming trio of games.

They're currently in development at EA Los Angeles and will be on show this week at E3.

The first of these is an action-adventure game for Xbox and PS3 codenamed LMNO. It's being described as an emotional game where characters will evolve depending on how they interact with each other over time.

Spielberg told Newsweek: "The challenge is, can the game have an emotional impact on players while they are actively manipulating the world?"

The second project is a puzzle game called PQRS for Wii. It's been likened to a Saturday-morning cartoon crossed with Jenga where you'll have to manipulate various blocks using the motion-sensing controls of the console. Apparently it should be great fun for all the family.

Unfortunately nothing was said about the third and final project.

We'll keep our eyes peeled at E3 for more information.

I gather LaughMyNutsOff is the title being overseen by superhero Doug Church, which makes it actually worth keeping track of.

Exactly. Doug Church is the one to watch, here. Spielburg is the Molyneux.

"Hollywood movie director Steven Spielberg"

As opposed to the Steven Spielberg who runs the jewish deli down the road?

Was there really the need to qualify who he was?

Spielberg, one of the greatest directors of all time, let loose on the Nintendo Wii, boasting one of the most innovative creations in recent history and all he can come up with is a... puzzle game.

I'm not sure who I'm more angry at Spielberg or EA.

Sounds like a good idea to have someone like Spielberg trying to pull some emotional value from a game... so it made me a bit cynical to see one of them is a cutesy puzzle game.

"Spielberg talks down his games"

'Likely to be shit', says Spielberg, 'The challenge is, can the world have an emotional impact on players while they are actively manipulating the game?.'

Jenga was an unlikely child for EA and Spielberg.

I didn´t know what to expect, to be honest.

But not that one.

It was Spielberg and his Dreamworks studio that initiated the Medal of Honour series, he's even on the credits of Allied Assault I think.
I think he also did The Dig.

"Allied Assault"

So, did he do the bit where you're in that snow-bound villiage, and if you step even remotely off an invisible path, you hear your sergeant shout "Panzer, DEAD AHEAD!" and then you blow up?

And then you reload and try again, and try going a different route, and you don't realize it, but you've stepped off the path again, and another invisible panzer shoots your legs off?

And you try this over and over until you find the correct path, and once you finally get through the section, you find that there was no tank on the entire level?

Genius!

Sénior Speilbergo and his son also had a big hand in the flawed/ahead of it's time game Tresspasser. There was even a little part of the software where they had an in game thanks to the gamer.
