Speedball II for XBLA
In August. About time.
Empire Interactive has finally stamped confirmation on Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe for Xbox Live Arcade.
The plan is to release it in August, complete with sparkly high-definition resolutions, more teams and downloadable content. No price has yet been mentioned, although we expect a figure of 800 gamerpoints is likely.
"We are pleased to be bringing this all time classic to Xbox Live Arcade," said Ian Higgins, CEO Empire Interactive. "With its brutal and addictive gameplay, plus the ability to play multiplayer over Live, we are sure this will be the definitive version of Speedball."
Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe is a violent sports game that pits two teams of heavily armoured and steroid-pumped players up against each other. The aim of the game is to throw your metal ball into the other team's goal, smashing through all opposition in your way. It's a bit like American Football gone mad, if you can imagine that. And if there were rules in the game, we can't remember them.
You can also ping the ball around the arena to trigger bonuses or thunder around collecting cash. This money can then be used to upgrade your team's abilities or to buy new players, helping you on your way to winning the league.
Bitmap Brothers developed the original for the Amiga back in 1991, which went on to sell over two million copies.

Bitmap MD Mike Montgomery is also currently overseeing a remake of Speedball 2 for PC. French outfit Kylotonn is developing it, and we jetted out to Paris in April to get a look at how it was all going.

Have I mentioned how excited I am about this?
Very.
That's how excited I am.
Fingers crossed they don't fudge it up.

Loved this on the Amiga.
Fingers crossed it doesn't get ballsed up or feel too out of place as many of the 'retro' XBLA games do (and god help us if it uses the D-Pad).

The XBLA title being put out by Empire (that this news story is about) isn't the remake.

Business as usual then.

BUT SURELY USING THE ANALOG FOR A DIGITAL GAME WOULD BE LIKE HAVING AN EVEN MORE WOBBLY DIGITAL CONTROLLER THAN THE DIGITAL PAD.

I now do make a solemn vow to shout "ICECREAM!" At random moments moments until this is released in August.

That's the one they're converting for this, as far as I know.

There are no rose tints - it's still supremely playable - and if the Live execution is smooth, it gets the full screen 16:9 HD treatment and they change UTTERLY NOTHING ELSE this will be an awesome, awesome addition to Arcade
although the ability to create online Leagues would be a stroke of genius...

There was a PC version which was great and blatantly the easiest version to convert from for 360. And on a PC analog joystick it was great anyway - shame I broke 3 playing it

I dont have access to any of the stuff batman does - ask him

Indeed it is. I stayed behind after work and played this and Track and Field. However, the 3D version feels much slower than the original graphics version. It's a shame but we spent most of the time playing the original graphics version which is super fantastic.

Ha ha. I don't think I'd be able to. I haven't been working for this company for very long and I really don't want to put my job in jeopardy.

I am worried about the PC remake version though, but this XBLA outing should be so good.
