When I first saw Square Enix's name attached to these, I thought we might be in line for a Puzzle Quest-stylee blend of classic Square RPG mechanics married to old-school shootiness or block breaking...
Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case after all. Ah well...

SIE is absolutely superb, and anyone who ignores it thinking it's an old-style Space Invaders game is a chump who deserves to miss out on one of the best DS games yet. A Euro release is great news, although the Jap version is almost totally free of language issues. Arkanoid DS is belief-defyingly rubbish.

I actually bought both Space Invaders Extreme on import for both DS and PSP, I then got the spinner for the DS so figured I might as well get Arkanoid as well!
To me, Arkanoid is a solid enough title (though not as good as the SNES version), but both Invaders titles are superb, with the levels being the same on both, but with better sound and resolution on the PSP (although I prefer the DS version for some reason). Imagine a cross-over between Rez and Space Invaders and that is what you are getting, it is truly excellent and both Edge and GamesTM rated it highly, around the 8 mark IIRC.

cawley1 is bang-on there, SIE is exactly that: Space Invaders, but 'retro evolved' in the GOOD way, so that it plays like Rez, but is still space invaders. You can still riff on these old chords and make something new and excellent if you try. I'd recommend it to anyone who ever enjoyed a vertical shooting game of any kind.
