Space Giraffe finished News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

20 April, 2007

Farm-based Jeff Minter has finally confirmed that work on Space Giraffe is complete.

It's expected to be available sometime soon on Xbox Live Arcade, and will cost a paltry 400 Microsoft Points to download.

Minter announced the news on his LiveJournal earlier this week. Joining this revelation were three new screenshots, each showing results of how he faired on a trio of different levels. His scores for each were plotted on a graph and matched up against a game-set median line, which he dipped under in the middle levels then bested on the latter stages.

Minter admitted he needs a little practice. There's also a picture of a sheep further down.

Space Giraffe is a psychedelic shooter in a similar vein to previous title Tempest 2000. However, the similarities end on the surface, and the developer is keen to point out that this is a different and unique game.

It's being created by Llamasoft, of which Jeff Minter makes up one half and Ivan Zorzin the other. Head over to the Llamasoft website for a short history of everything.

Interested but cynical.

I predict a whole host of hero worship activity though, regardless of whether it actually turns out to be any good.

the one with all the swearing should be released for 600 points at the same time and see which one sells the most ;)

Seriously tho.. this game has been in development for AGES so if they make any cash off of it I would be surprised.

If there's only two of them then hopefully they haven't run up too many costs in the process, I think he has enough experience to know where to spend his money ie. they haven't paid a marketing agency to rebrand them with a shitty flash website, hired lots of people to get the game done quicker, or failed cert 6 times.

I want a farm :(

Yeah, with that huge development team to support....and all those animals to feed....

I think Jeff will probably make more money from it than anything else he has ever done, even if a very small % of users stump up.

Edit - Jeff and another bloke. And some sheep.

And all the better for it. Right from the start, he's always shown plenty of imagination and personality in his games, and long may that continue.

If you put Jeff Minter and Alan Moore in a room together, the entire universe turns inside out and then vomits itself back into existence. This is scientific FACT.

Please, please, please, please, please, release the swearing version in some way or another. The early screenshots with the swearing plastered all over the game screen like fireworks just sent me into hysterics for some reason at it's plain randomness.

What can I say, I'm just a kid at heart :)

But then, anyone who fails to find neon messages appearing all over the screen saying "Horse Smegma; Fluff Fucker; and Cunt, Cunt" funny is emotionally dead in my eyes. Or at least miserable sod who had no childhood.

By 2 people. They could take 20 years and it'll still cost considerably less than most XBLA games.

On one hand i admire jeff.. lone ranger game developer sticking it to the man by making games still on his own, etc etc. Wish there were more of him about. Game developers (and indeed gamers) seem to have forgotten games are supposed to be .. you know.. fun.

On the other hand. All he seems capable of doing is tempest style games and light synthesisers (or both joined together). Be nice to see him try something a little different. But then, one man on his own, that's not gonna be easy.

So thumbs up from me.

I've bought nearly every one of his games from The Matrix on C64 (awful, cracked plastic wallet included free), through HovverBovver and Sheepies in Space to Tempest, and to be fair they're all a bit cock (Tempest excluded, then). But you've gotta love the old hippie for sticking to his guns - quite literally.
