Space Giraffe coming to PC next week News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

10 December, 2008

Llamasoft is whacking out a PC version of trancey shooter Space Giraffe next week, priced at USD 20 - that's GBP 13.50 to you.

"It is a joyous time of year full of sexy reindeer, inebriated bearded fellows with rosy cheeks and distended sacks, and wanton consumerism gone wild," said Jeff Minter, who's a bit of a hero.

"What better time to cheer up the entire world with the release of a new videogame. We at Llamasoft are dedicated to our ongoing mission to make the world a better place for everybody."

Jeff, we've never seen a sexy reindeer, but we do understand that Space Giraffe on Xbox Live Arcade divided quite a lot of people.

As an old-school almost remake of Tempest, Space Giraffe has players fly down a corridor level blasting enemies into the void, all the time avoiding being hit by an oncoming vessel.

There's a Power Zone ability to mix things up, as players become invulnerable to outlying ships while the effect lasts. Tactics, tactics.

Head over to our Space Giraffe review to find out more.

Update: Yes, this story originally said Space Giraffe PC is "out now". We're not liars, honest; just morons. Sorry.

That's a bit pricey considering how much it's available for on XBLA. Particularly given the content isn't great. At this price it has to compete with games like bioshock.

FOUR times the XBLA price, in fact. Or almost six times, if you get your MS Points from Tesco Jersey.

I really wanted to like SG, but it just wasn't fun. Geometry Wars 2 pisses all over it to be honest.

Why would you when you can buy them from the 360 dashboard. I dont understand how retailers manage to sell these cards when you can add points to your account directly when buying games.

He's a Scot, and would probably hitch a ride to Jersey if it meant another quid off.

Incidentally, WHERE is this game available, and WHERE do Llamasoft say these things they're quoted as saying? Not on the Llamasoft blog, and not on Minter's own blog or forum, and not anywhere that Googling "Space Giraffe PC" brings up. What the heck sort of shoddy-arsed journalism is this you're bringing us, EG?

It was an overpriced at £3.50 never mind £13.50

Terrible, terrible game. Mind you has Minter ever made a good game? No - just bad clones of decent games.

Jebus it isn't a 'terrible' game its a good game with a very obscure play mechanic.
If you play it like the original tempest its rubbish.
Its not like the original at all although it looks similar.
Its actually a very deep shooter linked to sound a bit like Rez.
But this is obscured by the trippy visuals and confusing tutorial.

The PC version has a 100 new remixed levels. Same as the old ones but with far less trippy backgrounds. (As well as the original levels)

Putting aside subjective views for a moment (personally, I enjoyed SG and am a Minter fan, but I can see why it is pretty inaccessible for most, and he DESPERATELY needs an artist), I'd say the price point for the XBLA version was too low. The PC price point is bonkersly high. Both at the equivalent of 800 points would have been spot on.

It's so kids can buy points with their pocket money without having to borrow daddy's credit card, duh

Linking to the 360 review isn't really going to be representative of the PC version as Yak has done a MAJOR remix of all the levels to make them far less trippy and more approachable to your average gamer. The original 360 levels are still there too as an for the hardcore fans as well so it should have something to suit all tastes now.

i look forward to pirating this. If it had been £3 on steam I would have bought it, but at £13, I will make a point of carrying the hacked version around on my USB pen and giving it to friends as well.

It's not fair to compare Space Giraffe with Geometry Wars.

GW is a 'twitch' game. If you try and twich your way through SG, you'll do badly and you'll have a terrible time.

Edit to add: if you play SG in a strategic, non-twitchy manner, you'll have a blast.

Of course - all of that is our fault, or that of the games industry in general.

Excellent game, rubbish demo, and too many backward people eager to jump on a Minter-bashing bandwagon.

...

Anyway, absolutely daft price for the PC version.
