Sony unveils GTA IV PS3 bundle
Console, pad, game for GBP 320.
Sony has finally unveiled an official Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 bundle for Europe.
It will cost GBP 319.99 (EUR 400) and include a 40GB PS3 with a Sixaxis pad and a copy of the game. It has a pretty box, too.
"We are delighted to offer the millions of PS3 and GTA fans the ultimate gaming package," said David Reeves, boss of Sony Europe.
Retailers have the bundle ready to buy right now and promise delivery on the day of GTA IV release - 29th April.

Admittedly, if I was buying a console I'd probably consider it for the Blu-Ray, but then again I'm not buying another console until I get a big shiny new TV, and I'm not buying that until I win the lottery, so....where was I?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
GBP 319.99 looks a bit of a silly price after constanly watching the GTA IV MS advert with £159.99 for the console constantly banded about.
Now we know that isn't the best value version, but Play.com are doing a 360 premium and the game for £199.99.
This will really test how strong the connection is between PS and GTA brands.

As for putting Sixaxis in this new bundle even after they have said they are being phased out, that is an outright piss take, shocking.
Edit - @ LazyDan
I don't really think this is for launch. This is for all those people who pick up GTA and a console after they hear how good it is a few weeks/months down the line (just like what happened with GTA3, VC & SA.)

Surely they are only "enticing" you to be raped?

You're getting confused. The Dual Shock 2 is the PS2's controller and has rumble. The Sixaxis is the non-rumbling PS3 one, with the Dual Shock 3 being the proper controller.

In the US the same bundle gets a Dualshock 3.

Thanks for correcting the typo (can't say I take that much notice of the wording on the pad when I go round to my mates) - I guess the important bit is that the bundled pad is the one which has no haptic feedback.
Should it be called the Dual-Shock 3 Sixaxis Rumble Free Mark One?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Because it is?, we can argue its value, but for a entertainment system it is expensive.

The fact remains that you can get a Premium 360 and a copy of the game for £200. That's £120 less than this bundle and no matter how you cut it that's pretty bad.
I'd rather have the £120 change to do with as I see fit.

A 360 Elite and a pS3 are not comparable hardware.
Add £60 for wifi dongle and £40 to get online and now the Elite is more expensive than the PS3 and still doesn't play blu-rays.
If you just want a GTA4 machine then a 360 is cheaper but don't pretend that a 360 Elite is a similar spec to a PS3 because it isn't.
I'm importing my copy of GTA4 for 31.99GBP anyway so it's all good here.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The HDMI difference can probably be offset to some degree by the fact you can't buy a New Dual-Shock 3 Now with Rumble Mark Two pad and have it delivered from anywhere for £20?
In addition
Seems the GTA IV advert is making the PS3's perceived value drop to the masses - many on here would find it hard to believe (myself included but it seems to be true) there are still millions of homes out there without a HD TV set - so the Blu- Ray addition is inconsequential (obviously if they have a crap TV uncompressed 7.1 audio is probably not going to be swaying them either);
Retro versions
As for the Amiga and St versions - I've read that the ST and A500 need the 1 Meg Ram pack and that the A1200 can get by with half a Meg - but all versions need to have 3 external disk drives to get the streaming geometry to work properly (the game is a monster and comes on 4 disks), other wise you have to disk swap when you move to different sections of the City.
EDIT - just read that you need Kickstart 1.3 or above for it to work on the A500. Damn my original machine!

Playing online over wifi is shit, you can have a superiour connection for 5 quid. I paid 7 € for this years online and have no interest in BRD atm (not in this console cycle anyway). So no, it really isn't cheaper. Just because you chose to have optional things shuved down your throat doesn't mean that others do as well.

PS3

Not that I hate 360, I own all three consoles, but you have to admit that the cards don't bode well for MS, now that they've lost a lot of major Xbox 360 exclusive devs. Bioware, Bizare Creations, Bungie... even Capcom's are all multiplatform now. And Sony has a massive amount of in-house of Sony exclusive studios. That kinda kicks one leg from under 360's strongest aspect.
Looking into the future, PS3 is a safer bet. And the public knows it, the monthly sales are the proof of that.

360 Premium plus GTAIV for £200 is probably the best deal going, I just don't see the value of the Elite when all it gives you is the larger hard drive and an HDMI cable. Maybe that's just me tho', as I don't use the HDD for much.

If your old 360 ran Crackdown - it should be fine with GTA IV. Both of my 360's are originals and neither has failed.
Every demo of the game has seemingly been on 360 (when mentioning button layout in game etc) I find it hard to believe Rockstar would show the worst version every time. From that you could guess that at best the PS3 version will be identical - or perhaps more likely after the PS3 no-shows, slightly worse.
That said I feel sure either version will be genre defining.

It's happened to me before - I bought myself a black DS about a week before those nice shiny silver ones got launched.
I've been waiting for the 80GB model (with backwards compatibility) ever since the old 60Gb one disappeared from retail. It's been a long, long wait...
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Anyway, I predict it'll still be a boring sandbox game with lots of compromises to the engine (poor framerate, cars and people disappearing in thin air if you look the other way, etc.) lots of variety in gameplay but not a single mechanism that's executed particularly well that will get rave reviews and outsell Halo 3. But it will not even create a dent in Wii's position as champion of this generation.

In France the GTA IV PS3 pack is sold for 439 EUR, while the XBOX 360 has the following offer going:
Buy any XBOX 360 pack + GTA IV and get a 60 EUR refund
in addition a core XBOX 360 pack will be launched on May 7 consisting of:
Xbox 360 core + 2 pads + PGR 4 + Halo 3 + 512mb all for the sweet price of 199 EUR.
As a result combining the pack above with GTA IV refund will get you the 360 with 3 top games and 2 pads (1 wireless, 1 wired) for 209 EUR

Depends on whether you plan to play more than a couple of games and whether you like Live Arcade. If all you want to do is play GTA IV and then throw the machine away, it's the cheapest option.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Can't believe people still complain about the price of the PS3, even after all the cuts and offers available - spose some people are just never happy. The 360 is NOT cheap, I ended up paying more for my (elite) than my PS3, what with the stupidly priced wireless adapter, xbox live etc. It is a great console though, I just wish people would see both consoles as equals.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
You're missing the HDD which prevents you from using DLC, game updates and Live Arcade games. You can use memory cards for the Arcade games, not sure about updates and DLC. There are a few games that require a HDD I believe, but couldn't tell you which ones - couple of large RPGs if I recall. You're also missing the HDMI cable, network cable and headset, but you may not ever use these items depending on your TV and internet set-up.
So no, I wouldn't say it's a con job, as long as you know what you're getting. There's a comparison guide here for the US versions which I believe are identical to the UK. The chart doesn't seem to be on the UK portal tho'.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I know 360 fanb... 'core gamers' have become salesmen for MS lately (comments always seem to be punctuated with the latest offers and prices) but the consumer who wants an all-round HD entertainment unit will go for a PS3, whatever the price. If you can afford a +40" 1080p display, you're not going to be tightening the purse strings over a few more quid on a PS3.
I'm just looking forward to the 29th to check out both versions of GTAIV first hand...

Yeah I was waiting to, but MGS4 is starting to loom and I don't need to pay for a year so I thought "F**k it, I need Blu-Ray and a DVD upscaler anyway"
But there lies the real problem for MS now, yes they are cheaper but if joe public wants GTA4 AND a machine that does all (including BR) they are stuffed.
@Les
I always chuckle at your view on one of the biggest franchises out there. You always bring up the Wii, why? It is, after all, for a completely different market (has ninty ever done GTA?). Also "boring sandbox game" have you ever played a GTA game???
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I would have been of the same opinion due to not knowing about the offer Isursock mentioned....

The above seems like a highly compelling reason to plump for the 360 version to me - I agree with him - the value in that is insanely good - although clearly that would be sales that happen a week after launch of GTA IV.

Comment below viewing threshold Show
Because people around here think that GTA IV will influence the 'console war'. It won't. It might be the biggest game release so far but it won't do anything about the lead of the Wii. GTA III was fresh and brought new people to gaming. GTA IV is GTA III with added pixels.
I've played Vice City and San Andreas. As games they are very poor. I liked the story of Vice City and it interested me just enough to finish it (though if I had played III and thus the novelty had worn off, I don't think I'd have made it to the end). SA was boring from the start and I never finished it and have no plans on wasting any more time on it. Sandbox game = no purpose game = boring game for me.

You on about cost, it's simple. People who wants to play GTA4 can spend from £159.99 for a 360. Then buy a game that's another £40. So just to play the game you can spend up to £200-£210. That's over £100 difference, this is about the PS3 bundle price being a rip off as it's hardly any difference on buying the game and PS3 separate apart from £10-£20. A dual shock 3 controller is not even included. To play GTA4 for £200 is the cheapest option you can get. The Xbox Live issue, I spend £25 for a 12+1 months subscription from Ebay plus if you look around normal online shops you should find them from £32.99-£34.99 easy. I own a PS3, 360 and Wii. I don't mind paying Xbox Live as the online features on PS3 is not as good.

The difference in total cost between a 360 + GTA4 and the PS3 bundle is the same as that for any other one game before.

Perhaps from a 360 fanboys perspective, anything that is said that detracts from their console being perceived as superior in any way possible could only come from a fan-boy.
You make me laugh."
Swam, you have to think about the main topic over the fanboys. Most people are generally correct that this bundle is a bit pointless due to not much price difference on buying a PS3 and the game separate. I remembered alot of advertisements a couple of weeks ago stated that the PS3 had a price cut of £279.99. This makes it no point having the bundle if you don't save money. Plus DS3 controller not included is a downer.

Sony are thinking "we've got this nice big stock of SIXAXIS left. Would be a shame (and costly) to throw them away. Let's put them in the boxes till we run out of them.". Just a business decision. If you don't like it, you don't get it. Simple as that.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The old "if you don't like it.." line. Why should it always be down to the consumer and his wallet to kick these w****rs in the head until they actually provide a decent deal/service. I voted with my wallet and ended up with a scaled back PS3 from the rest of the world! Maybe if big business changed it's attitude to us we wouldn't need to vote with our wallets and could happily spend with them rather than complain.
I know it's a business decision, just not a customer friendly one. mugging off consumers is more painful in the long run than dumping a mistake that should not have happened it the first place IMO.

The problem with the PS3 bundle is that it doesn't move anyone to purchase that bundle because of price and lack of anything more than the game. Even if you were holding out for a PS3 when the perfect bundle came along, you sure would not purchase this one but instead wait for the MGS4. Hell, Europe continue to get shafted because the US bundle will include the Dual Shock 3 controllers for that bundle while Sony clears it stock in Europe because they know they can. Its so funny, that for all the loyalty that Europe has shone Sony, instead of treating the market with respect that shows them the most love, Sony continue to slap you in the face and call you their bitch.

"whew at all the trolling in this thread, looks like Microsofts HQ just moved its headquarters into here.
i,l easily pay extra for a system that wont randomly 'break' on me and had to be sent 2 weeks for repairs whenever a the next 'big' game is released.
i love it when the MS trolls mention the ( 199£ ) price-tag for the arcade version, without mentioning the extra-(hidden) costs to even start properly using it, how much does it cost to buy a ' proprietary ' microsoft-only Hardisk so that you enjoy your 10 hours of extra missions ?
i love it how they never mention how you are 'forced' to pay so that you can play your games online, even though the online-component is a part of the game you purchased and is part of the decision on why you choose to buy that particular game, with the Xbox360 system....you pay to play with your 'own bandwidth.
Microsoft is also generous enough to offer you 'advertesiments' on your paid service, gotta love how they treat there fans
in all history of gaming system there have never been a system with a failure-rate as high as microsofts Xbox360 system, there are people on there 8th system, and some 'fans in here are recommending that system for others ? god.....what did humanity do to you that you are willing to hurt people with your recommandations ?"
1) So all Xbox 360s will 'randomly break' just when the next big game is released? Horseshit.
2) Fuck the Arcade version, look at how much the Premium GTA4 bundle is. Non-argunment.
3) Fact: The PSN is a fucking joke compared to Live. Lets not even try to somehow imply that the two are on an even keel. Thats what your sub pays for. Less than 3 quid/month, in fact. And thats roughly in the region of 6 quid less, per month, than all those millions of World of Warcraft players pay.
3.1) Add to that the fact that you get either 1 or 2 Arcade releases, per week. Some are wank, yes, some are ok but some are fucking ace . The PSN is a sore loser, in comparison. Updateslol
4) Please, so because I pay for the Live service, I shouldn't then see adverts? I went to the cinema the other day and was forced to sit through 20 mins of trailers and adverts. I also got on the bus this morning and was bombarded by ads for a daytripper pass. Cretin.
5) Failure rate may be higher than we'd like but hey, theres now a 3 year guarantee to go with. What would I sooner have, a console that has a good library of games with good new ones coming out on a regular basis, or a console that has a poorer release schedule than the Atari Jaguar. Well, actually I have both, but the point is if I had to choose one now, id take the one that has more games with an online service that delivers, on a consistent basis. If that means it breaks down 3 months in, and I have to make do without it for 2 weeks, so be it.
The PS3 is a good machine but FFS, that was a weak list of 'reasons' why people shouldnt buy a 360. You fail. Badly.

Definitely, given that the PS2 was more expensive than the xbox (and gc) for pretty much its entire lifespan... Price is important but providing an experience people actually want much more so. PS3/360 offer nothing new compared to the PS2/xbox/GC and therefore the public isn't really interested.

So less than 3 quid/month isnt 'worth it' for a service that, frankly, pisses all over the PSN? Your whole 'shouldn't have to pay' argument is null and fucking void, quite frankly, as the millions and millions and millions of WoW subscribers alone, never mind all the other MMOGs subbers, would also tell you.
If a service is good and delivers on a consistent basis, it is worth paying less than 3 quid/month for. If we had to pay for the PSN, you can bet your bottom dollar there would be uproar. It only gets away with the mediocre, at best, release scehdule it currently has because it's free.

The issue isn't the PSN Store, its whats on the fucking PSN Store. Especially the Euro PSN Store. Thank God for the Warhawk expansion because, aside from that, theres been sweet FA recently. As is the case on an almost week by week basis. Live releasing 1 or 2 games, per week is simply head and shoulders above what the PSN offers. I know that i'll see an announcement on Live, each week, about a new release or two.
And also, this in-game XMB, where have you heard that this is actually going to be implemented? Genuinely interested although, again, this is only part of what makes Live the success that it is. So keep pulling bits and pieces out and trying to imply that they are 'all Live offers'.

I think it has already happened with current Wii owners. A quick glance at October 2007 video game sales figures show that the Wii only holds two out of the top ten places with Guitar Hero III and Wii Play.
And if that means nothing else, it tells you one important fact about Wii owners -- they really only play a handful of games and don't bother to buy most of the games that are currently available for the console.
As I've said before, the Wii is a novelty device that doesn't have the long-term appeal that the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 do. Is it a fun console to use? Sure. Are there some good games? You bet. But is there enough of a software offering and downright appeal to entice gamers to buy a Wii over a Playstation 3? Right now, it does. But within the next year, look for Wii sales to slump as the PS3 continues to grow, suffice it to say, the Wii is a fine device, but it's not going to continue selling this well and if Japanese console figures are any indication of the rest of the world, Nintendo won't be selling more Wii units than Sony going forward.
We’ve all known that the PS3 has superior processing power with alot more potential but that hasn’t really slowed things down because, until late, the Xbox 360 still had enough grunt to keep up. On top of that, it was much easier for game developers to code games for the Xbox as it was an older platform and had more memory (specifically bandwidth, alot more). Well, that’s not going to be the case much longer… Playstation is going to have the edge in producing cutting edge games. Right now, the margin is small - but that won’t last for long, you can already have a taste of it by playing games like Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, and in short time MGS4... Ps3 will win the console war, with free on-line "HOME", AAA games, high quality hardware, Blu-Ray etc...
now back to GTA4... to play the DLC "added content", you need an HDD, how much does it cost??? you need to pay for your live service, how much does it cost??? you need to be very lucky because probably your console will end up dead during thouse long gaming hours, plus, GTA4 will be better both in terms of performance and graphics in the PS3... so, where does that lead us??? yes, in my opinion the PS3 is the best choice.

And Xbox Live has been discussed time and time again. But the bottom line is that it only costs £40 a year, and offers by far the best online service out there. If Sony can manage to surpass that, then that would be great, but as a PS3 and a 360 owner, I've seen nothing on PSN so far that comes close to matching Xbox Live. Home sounds interesting, but sounds more like a distraction and a novelty, rather than something that will actually aid online play.
And the fact you acknowledge that recent rumour that the 360 will die out from extended play time? I'm sorry, but that kills any credibility you may have had. I've had my 360 on for days at a time before, watching the entire of Star Trek The Next Generation, and haven't had a single problem with the thing. And no, it doesn't make that much noise either, before you try that old jab
Comment below viewing threshold Show
My 360 'will probably die during the long gaming hours'? How come it hasn't done, so far, then?
Seriously, the whole RROD affair was funny for the first few weeks but now its the only thing that anyone can level at the machine. Yes, it was a poor decision to release when they did, given the build quality, but as ive already said i'd sooner have 6 months of gaming pleasure and then 'maybe' have to have it repaired than have 6 months of mediocre shite, interspersed with the occasional gem, that the PS3 has been offering.
I love Warhawk and Drakes Fortune but how come they're the games that we see repeated over and over and over again, regards 'quality titles'? Therein lays the problem. That theres precious little selection and thats where the 360 kicks the PS3s ass. Big time.

The whole tread has turned back into the age old, My corporate company is better than yours instead of talking about the validity of this bundle.

You get shafted on price, features, etc but you get people like Apologie, Headbog and a few others who can find no fault with Sony.
The bundle is a joke because instead of getting the latest and greatest with a decent price, you get shoved the crap Sony wants to get rid of. Yep, just keep being the nation that Sony feels they do not need compete because I am sure Europe will continue to get crap first. The problem with WiFi that comes with the PS3 and Wii is that the more important it gets the worst it gets. In other words, as more people use it, the more interference you get and thus the worst reception you get. I know this for a fact because where I live, everyone has WiFi around me and it sucks for the PS3 and Wii that I have. I have everything wired (except the Wii orcourse) which even if I had better WiFi reception would be the way to go if you plan to actually use your console to play online. If all you are going to do is surf the web with your PS3 or Wii then WiFi is fine.
WiFi is a nice feature to have but in reality, its is not important if you want to play online without your WiFi not being up to snuff. If you plan on turning your PS3 into a media station then WiFi really becomes useless especially if you stream High Def content.

Yes there is the RROD but I am the only one out of 27 friends who have first run 360 who has had the problem. When the PS2 had the disk read errors from the DVD drive would you have been here calling it a "seriously defective console". I had to replace the DVD drive on 2 different PS2. Every friend I have who purchased a PS2 had to either get the DVD drive replace or attempt to take it apart and scrub the lens to make it work or just get a new one. Either way, the problem was fixed by Sony and that problem went away. The same can and will be done with the 360 version so living in the past on the RROD issue is stupid. Never did Sony give an extended warranty on the DVD drives so I say at least MS one up them on service in that respect.
Apologie, you do defend Sony like there is no other option. You have never questioned anything they have done and have only punished the 360 for the mistake they have made. You have never questioned how Sony has used the European market but steadily bring up rumors or even half truths concerning the 360. Please, you among all here are the true definition of a Fanboy. The masses will vote with their wallet.
All the ps3 and xbox 360 nobbery aside, this is a massive mistake on the part of Sony's marketing department.
As for the blu ray arguement, fact is, if i walk into HMV, i am assulted with row upon row of dvd's. Blu ray is far too young to be deciding factor for anyone, apart from early adopters, who also tend to be hard core gamers.
My first reaction to this - this is a rip off. Even 20 quid of would have made a bit of a difference, but this REEKS of sony throwing something togeather to counter the xbox360 media assault, and doing it half assed.

If you really are so cost conscious (and play a lot of games and don't care too much about the few 360 exclusives you can't get on PC) PS3 is rather cheap. Which shows without doubt the Wii is their machine of choice.
"All the ps3 and xbox 360 nobbery aside, this is a massive mistake on the part of Sony's marketing department."
Why?! Because they release a package that links the PS3 closely to GTA IV?! A branded pack is bound to be more effective than in-store combos, otherwise they would have died long ago. Let's just wait and see. I predict that far more PS3s than 360s will be sold because of GTA IV. Because only 'hardcore' gamers are interested in GTA IV and if they don't have a 360 by now they'll have good reasons for it and chances are incredibly slim they will get one because of GTA IV.
"As for the blu ray arguement, fact is, if i walk into HMV, i am assulted with row upon row of dvd's. Blu ray is far too young to be deciding factor for anyone, apart from early adopters, who also tend to be hard core gamers."
PS3 is still early in its lifecycle and not that cheap. Same goes for the 360s with HDD. People that tend to be interested in any of these two machines still fall in the hardcore gamer category (either because of price or because of image) and, like you say, are precisely the group that tends to be attracted by Blu-Ray (and goodlooking hardware).
But like I said before, this will have a minor impact on the battle for second place, nothing more...

We made our games so that they would run on the PS2 fine... and the xbox version had bigger textures (512x512 instead of 256x256).

1. Seriously...wifi is hit or miss with a lot of people, so to say it's a necessity is absolutely ridiculous. If I were to use wifi in my house, I'd be hampered severly. It's not the best option for everyone and for gaming, it's not the best option in most cases. In the future that may change.
2. PSN has figures as well. So, again...total nonsense. "proves that XB owners have no choice but to use XBL to play online." What options do you have to play online besides PSN, I'm curious to know?
3. RRoD is an issue, I won't deny. Didn't seem to stick much with PS owners that their PS2's were nearly as unreliable however, so this argument is ridiculous.
4. Bluray IS IN FACT irrelevant for many people. I'd check your stats on HDTV penetration before claiming blu-ray is an all-important feature. Not only that, but it's likely we'll have BD players w/full capabilities cheaper than the PS3 in the very near future.
5. Exclusives quality is debatable, but if you want a "measuring stick," then look at a site like gamesrankings.com or metacritic to see which has more quality exclusives. Otherwise, nobody gives a rats ass about your obviously skewed opinion on which has the better games.

I never claimed it to be "factually correct." I don't know that anyone could, but Swam sure made it sound like what he believed was a fact.
I just know a few people who try to use it for gaming and their connection is generally not as good, plus they get kicked off more often than usual, plus having them host is sometimes useless.
I'm not saying ALL wifi is like that, but for the few people I know that use it for gaming, some are fine with it and some aren't.
And when talking about wifi, mentioning DL'ing a song to your iPod and playing a game with 24 players online are two COMPLETELY different things. For gaming, much of it depends on how good of a feed you have coming to your house and not everyone has a great one. Not every part of every country provides quality internet connections, so in order to get the most out of a crappy service, sometimes wifi isn't a plausible option.

Well, at least you admit to having a limited experience. In which case, I don't think any of us are absolutely qualified to make a completely informed argument on the matter. And I doubt there are figures anywhere to prove anyone's case even if they claimed to.

You wifi elitists are a funny bunch. Like there's something wrong with people who don't have wifi or that those without it should do everything they can to get it. Good grief...not every gives a crap, please understand that. I don't lie awake at night wishing I had wifi, nor do I peer into shop windows looking at the latest wifi routers. I really don't.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
WiFi in it's current state on the PS3 and Wii barely cut it. The only thing I use it for is surfing the web or the occasional limited download. I would never consider playing most games using WiFi because of the lack of a constant signal I can depend on not including the overhead for using encryption and not that weak Wep but WPA. WiFi is definitely not a necessity and anyone that wants to do more than surf will soon realize you need a wired connection if you want any decent speed. I will say that it's an option but if I could have purchased my PS3 20 bucks cheaper without it, then I would. Unfortunately the 20GB model was discontinued before I purchase my PS3. I have no choice with the Wii because it does not come with a connection which was a decision I did not like.
I have a server, that has a video capture card, that gets HD stations over the air. I use that machine as my DVR with Media Center. I can watch TV and record a show at the same time or record two shows and watch a recording. I also download Anime TV shows from Japan which is also nice. Any way, WiFi is not the solution for any of the things I do, so I wired my house which took less than it cost to by a wireless router.

The problem here is that it's NOT free as you continuously claim. It is built into the price of the PS3, and is part of the reason why the PS3 is more expensive. As for me not having it: I don't effing care.
"There's common sense, and then there's Fanboy sense.
You have the latter.
I dont have to pay anything to play on PSN, wheraes I have to pay £5, £15 or £40 to play on XBOX Live.
Are you seriously suggesting that if offered the choice between a free online gaming service, and one you have to pay for that offers nothing more than a slightly more advanced invitation system, they'd chose to pay?"
I don't even know why you're attacking me here. You orignallly stated that XBL has figures as to how many people are playing on XBL and that by them having figures it "proves" that people have no choice but to use XBL to play 360 games online. I then asked what options you have with the PS3 to play online besides PSN, and I also pointed out that Sony in fact does have figures as to how many people are using PSN. Where your response came from is beyond me and what it has to do with anything is also a mystery that only you can solve.
"The unreliability of the PS2's early models are well documented, but they were not nearly on the same scale as the RROD.
At no point did Sony have to write off $1billion of costs in one financial quarter to cover repairs, and at no point did it reach this scale.
Quite frankly, it's another red herring Playstation haters clutch to when defending the RROD issue."
If you have any kinds of facts to back this up, I'd like to see them. Otherwise, you seem to "know" a lot more than the average gamer. You're very informed. :sarcasm:
"Considering the market is very, very young, and that HDTV sales are begining to take off, your argument is invalid:
[link url=http://rapidtvnews.com/index.php/uk-hdtv...
HDTV sales account for 4 out of 5 sales according to the link, and as content (I.E. blu-ray, Sky HD, Freeview HD, Freesat, and of course, Games consoles), increases, takeup will be higher."
I didn't realize that everyone with an SDTV is running out TO-DAY to buy HDTV's. I should make sure my grandmother's aware of this mass exodus to HD! So, since I'll have to also go along with this trend, I guess a blu-ray player and PS3 are my only option!
"You mean where there's barely a few percentage points? My god, a game that scores 88% on Metacritic is UTTER SHITE!!!!!
It doesnt matter that a game that scores 98% might not appeal to me, it got a better score !!!"
Again...why are you arguing with me? Did you not recognize how I said "onions for onions"? However, the only debatably factual evidence we have today are reviews. Whatever you personallyprefer, that's fine by me. But to say that the 360's games don't touch PS3's exclusives, I think you know is just nonsense and can only be claimed by yourself alone (along with the rest of the SDF, of course).
"Stock reply when a Sony hater is defeated?"
Defeated? LOL. You're suggesting I provide opinion as factual evidence and trash everyone who doesn't agree. In that sense, yes, I'm defeated. I actually try to make sense and use actual proof and evidence to back my claims when necessary.

Oh, and everyone needs blu-ray this very instant.

I wonder why someone has to be an xbox fan when they voice opinions that are negative about either Sony or the PS3. I guess I am such the fan that I purchased a PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, and quite a few of Sony's other products including DVD players, TVs etc. Yep, I sure hate Sony and I am so much in MS pocket.
It appears to be the classic tactic to brand someone as Fanboy this or that to try to disqualify their opinion. My opinion is based on my experience. What is your opinion based on or is it a salary.
What I will tell you is that I am a consumer. I purchase what I feel will give me value. I purchase a PS3 because it will have exclusives that will never see the light of day on the 360. Just because I do not kiss the ground Sony execs walk on doesn't mean I have a problem with Sony products. I am just not the corporate man like yourself. I do not care about Sony the company or MS and Nintendo. I care about their products.
You would be the one to say that the failure rate of the 360 is not comparable to the PS2 but why is it that such a large amount of people have experienced it if they had a first Gen PS2. The reason I bring the PS2 into the discussion is because products can have their periods of bad hardware but nothing stays in a vacuum. Sony, just like MS through either internal or external forces will find the faults within their products and usually fix them. There are no differences between the faults that plagued the PS2 during its time then the one that has plagued the 360. The only difference is that MS nutted up (through pressure I am sure) and paid the price to warranty those bad products. Sony never came close.

If I'm singling you out swam I'm sorry but you appear to be by far the most prevalent poster on this matter. It just baffles me why you construe some one else's opinion that one console is better suited to there needs as an attack on your purchasing decision. Why you further feel the need to 'set them straight' only clarifies the fact that you have no have grasp on the concept of a personnel opinion.
For example I prefer live to psn but that doesn't mean I think every one who elected to use psn is ‘wrong’ because they don't agree with me, why the fuck do I care? If there having a blast using psn and I’m enjoying live where is the fucking problem??? I’ll tell where it is, its right here with wazzacks (love that word!!) like you who would rather aimlessly pontificate about how there opinion is the decisive conclusion on things gaming than do some thing enjoyable, like uhh I dunno play your fucking PS3.
Also to all those people justifying the price of live, why you feel the compulsion to defend MS for charging you play online on system you already bought, with a game you already bought, on a service the has massive profit margin’s selling digital media, which on top of everything now has advertising!!! Your loyalty is as miss guided as poor swam here, personally my relationship with MS ends when I get the product/service and they get my money.
Think you guys could do me a favour and take a long hard look for your individuality.

I'll shorten the whole the whole thing down to match your intellect and phrase it in such a way you can understand.
YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICE, ok still with me? This is the hard bit, LET OTHER PEOPLE MAKE THEIR CHOICE. Right let it sink in.... IF THEIR CHOICE IS DIFFERENT TO YOURS, ok really pay attention now!! IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY ARE WRONG, winding up now nearly finished! THIS IS CALLED A PERSONNEL OPINION.

@swam
I saw your reply to my post and decided it was to my eyes what a vindaloo is to my arse. Painful and leaky. Get my drift?
Edit: Sorry, just had to comment about the whole '3 quid/month, wtf are you on about?' drivel you also plopped into your response to my post. The way you're going on about this is so completely retarded, it beggars belief. For less then the cost of one full price game you can gain access to an integrated, regularly updated, maintained online service for a full year .
If having already spent hundreds of pounds on the console itself, plus any accessories to go with, you think a paltry 35 quid extra is somehow a 'deal breaker', you need to seek professional help. Its a no brainer and certainly isn't anything that would somehow dissuade a proper gamer from buying a console. In fact, if Sony were to offer a 'Premium' membership for PSN, which then presented weekly, guaranteed, updates and access to better performing dedicated servers, I'd snap their hand off, simply because I don't consider 3 quid/month to be anything other than a very, very minor inconvenience when compared against the amount of money I spend on games each year.
Its seriously like watching someone grabbing at straws in some strained attempt to 'preach' the ways of Sony. Tragic. It wouldn't be so bad if you actually owned a 360, thus could speak from a position of personal experience.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Now the RROD is clearing up finally, surely the 360 is far and away the safest bet for the future, Sony's in-house the main reason did you say? MS have said they have alot to announce we dont know about this year... maybe some of that has to do with first party?
While we are on that subject of Sony's first party support, where are all the first party games then?(surely if the teams are that big then they'd get games out quicker than third parties, aswell as Nintendos and MS' first party studios, not stupidly slower... the "only been out 5 minutes" line is waring a bit thin now and its the excuse for everything despite neither Nintendo or MS not having to use that one).
They're going to make you wait again and again to get your moneys worth... if you think about it Sony use this tactic all the time, promise lots on the horizon and amazingly thats enough to keep some gamers happy, the anticipation rather than the experience.
Untapped potential(bullcrap every system has it, times up on the once devs get used to it excuse),
Free Online just as good as live(we'll see),
will eventually have the most exclusives because of this allegedly biggest first party support(and they actually make games do they? AAA quality ones? we're waiting as always Sony Im seeing a pattern here)
Might aswell wait for the end of the generation for a PS3 then(not buying one at all out of principle now myself) and it will serve them right if alot of people do that, I just dont trust Sony on anything untill I see it with my own eyes because we know what they are like.

I fear it is YOU that is talking arse
How many people do i know with an apple tv (and bear in mind i worked in apple sales for three years) none
Iphone - None
Wii - i know TONNES of people with a wii, most of them use it when they have friends around, and couldnt be arsed with it after that. Wi Fi doesnt come into it
Using lap top in wi -fi spots - maybe one or two uses their laptops in an airport once in a while, but stop pretending that Wi-fi has become indispensable in everyones life.
As for the 40quid a year, i actually use live to talk to my friends in America and Austrilia - which let me tell you, 40 quid a year is ONE HELL OF A SAVING
As for platform exclusives, which games are best etc, reviews are entirely subjective, but if you want to go down that path, i;m MORE than happy with the Xbox, with licenses like Gears, Halo3, Mass Effect, etc
Quite frankly, xbox live is outstanding value for money, and the simple fact is, if it were reversed and the ps3 had live, you;d be crowing about it
swam, no offense but you sound like a tech twat, talking about all this tech, and wi fi and other services, that most normal people don't give a shit about.
Simply put - live allows me to talk to my firends, play against, get great casual games, all for 40 quid a year
It doesnt fucking matter if you like live or not, and clearly you only dislike it because you're a pathetic ps fanboy, the point it is, it does exactly what it say it does, and it does more than anything sony currently offers, despite two years in the market.
christ, all sony have is a half finished home, which ultimately will be nothing more than a pedo grooming site, and a second life refugee camp
Get a grip and get off your high horse
Just another illustration of the xbox live value - sunday past was talking to a friend in australia for about 90 minutes - with bt, that's £21.90 - i've made probably about a dozen calls like that this year so far, roughly, thats 240 quid just on calls.
Shit, i even used to it to talk to my parents when my sisters boyfriend left his xbox at their place
Swam - and you think live is poor value???????!!!!!!!

My point being, perhaps you couldnt grasp it, is that it is ONE facet of a service, and a facet that pays for itself in NO time. When the full package is then taken into account, its clear to anyone except a ps3 fanboy, that it is a great service worth its 40quid a year
All i see from PSN is a gimped service, hoping, HOPING that home will make a difference
If sony put less resources into their second life clone, maybe, MAYBE psn would get the boost it needs right now
More to the point, i haven't actually seen you point to anything of value, other than the fact that PSN is free.
Wee, its free!!!! Great. I'll compare that with my 3 quid a month. I'd agree with you, if live cost 50 quid a month. But 3 quid? Its a pathetic argument. I spend more than 3 quid a month on fanta, for fucks sake
Oh, and as for ichat, having worked for apple for three year, i wouldnt put a product of theirs in my house if my fucking cock and balls were on the chopping block

Why can't you accept that other people have different opinions and leave it at that? The fact that you have an opinion on something like, I dunno, The Role of WiFi in Modern Consumer Electronics, does NOT automatically make other peoples opinions wrong or invalid, merely different. The fact that you appear to think so says a lot about you.

It has its faults, so focus on them, bitching about 3 quid a month on live seems churlish to the extreme, and your bull shit facts have brought out the worst in me. MS have a good console out, and whatever you may think of it, Mass Effect was the pinnacle of gaming for me so far.

A gimped PS3 model with a mediocre HDD size.
A game version (that delayed the original launch, by the way) that will not expand as much as the X360 version.
A laughing stock of a controller (see LAIR) that doesn't even have the dual shock ability yet.
Oh yes, and another £20 over the already overpriced unit.
Hmm, my guess is most people will buy the X360 version or buy an X360, just to play GTA IV on it and look forward to all those exclusive episodic content that will come out later this year and next year.
Sony can stuff their extortionately-priced bundles.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
all this fuss about wifi is great, wifi is unnecessary etc, surely this is all in the eye of the individual
I wanted:
a) console that would media stream xvids (at the time last year, Tversity was the key for this on PS3)
b) play HD material (I hedged my bets for bluray)
c) play my leftover PS2 games (on a 60GB PS3 here)
d) have my favourite franchises of choice available to me (Final Fantasy and Metal Gear series)
e) wifi, so no wires trailing across my front room, and for streaming from PC.
so bobs my bloody uncle for the PS3. I forked out 400 notes for it and regret it not one jot. In the meantime I've been getting more bonuses from the machine as the functions available to it expand, native Divx and PlayTV are just more joys for me.
I used to have bog standard Live on the past xbox, and so far for me, I've not had an inferior service from PSN than my times on that or using PC networks. Also like the fact, as many people say, like playing on a PC its totally free. Also got a decent stack of 15 or so games, so the mystery of this being a non-gaming machine baffles me.
So go me, basically. I've got the right machine for me.
If someone comes along, wants to hardwire a console into a net connection, get up, get going, for under £180 and have the bare bones of it all. They're not going to want the solution that my needs created, its the wrong console for them.
Thus creates the problem of our 300 comment long thread, we've all bought what was the right choice for us, thereby they are the best consoles of this generation. The anger comes from other people coming along telling each other "no, its rubbish, you are wrong" when clearly they are on the whole very happy.
This entire argument goes across everything, TVs... people wading in saying the Toshiba Z series is the best, people shouting about their Philips Ambilight, owners going on about Samsung black levels. Plasma owners bemoaning LCDs inability to deal with SD material and motion well, LCD owners getting sharper images and a greater array of choice. Its all down to choice and this argument will go round and round without end.

The fact that there are people DESPERATE to try and convince others against the 360(9 times out of 10 its a PS3 fanboy) says alot about their faith in their own choice(ie a bit anxious) and the fact that you jump to the defense of those actions(not even denying it for them but saying its ok?) just confirmed what you are about. When people offer other sides of the arguement or point out some obvious errors they are labeled Xbots.
Let them make their own mind up and shove your FUD back up your arse where you pulled it from.
I dont even care who wins anymore, I just think its pathetic how some sad little people who dont understand anything about these companies think its righteous to attack Xbox fans simply for preferring Xbox... more often than not they know LESS about the industry, the consoles, and the companies behind them and how all these aspects compare... yet look how they preach, my point is who do these sad little people think they are and how cant they see what hypocrites they are?

I'm not going to pretend that I can predict the outcome, nor am I going to side for or against BluRay/PS3. However, one can make an intelligent assumption and that's the best one can do.
1. BluRay's success relies upon people having an HD-TV. Whereas DVD didn't, BluRay needs more changes in a typical living room, before it can be appreciated and used more often and considered as a replacement for DVD. Now this may or, as some are already saying, may not happen. So it will either flop or succeed because of other factors; no need to extol its technical virtues - those have been covered enough in many places. But the technology is not as simple as buying a DVD player and sticking it under your telly, you need a new HD-TV and, possibly (for the enthusiast/avid fan), a better sound system as well. All of that costs money.
2. The PS3 is helping making BluRay a viable solution for HD content, not just because it's won the war against HD-DVD but because it's officially the cheapest BluRay player around. So, if people can achieve the requirements in point 1, above, then with the purchase of a PS3, they will have the whole infrastructure to support HD content.
So, it's kind of the PS3 helping BluRay and BluRay helping PS3 situation.
