Sony unveils fresh Lair DLC

Analog dragons for next week.

Sony Europe has shed more light on the freshly announced Diabolical Dragons and Skyguard Update packs for Lair.

Both will be available on 17th April, with the former said to be paid for and the latter a title update - pricing yet to be determined.

Diabolical Dragons will add two fresh scaly beasts to fly around the sky on. The first of these is a Poison Dragon, which is apparently one of the biggest and baddest around. Its chunkiness makes it a bit slow, but it has very fiery breath to roast things with.

Or you can pick the rather wimpy Wind Dragon. This is very fast and agile, but difficult to control.

The choice is yours: an angry sloth or a pidgeon.

The Skyguard Upgrade, on the other hand, adds the much sought-after analog control system to the game. This can be turned on or off and maps controls to the left thumbstick or nub if you are remote playing on your PSP. There is also a crosshair option you can turn on or off.

Hopefully this should make Lair a much more enjoyable experience than it was at launch.

Didn't they swear blind they'd never do this? At least they changed it before the game had faded into complete irrelevence.

    Oh wait...

    The irony! :)

    This game is genuinely awful.

My mate got it along with the fantastic Uncharted, i did warn him, his response was "dude you ride dragons, it's going to be awesome, like panzer dragoon orta" and oh dear i was 100% right.

@Johnson - Factor 5 fiercely defended their decision to go motion-control only when the backlash against Lair started but I guess they've had no choice but to concede it wasn't a good idea.

Personally, having played the game (well I did import it actually), I found the controls OK but the problem isn't really the controls, it's the shape of the PS3's controller which means that it all ultimately felt kind of clumsy and clunky, unnatural even, no matter how accurate or responsive they'd made them. That I'm holding a conventionally shaped controller just makes the whole motion-sensing pointless when I could easily have achieved the same result using an analogue stick. It just highlights how poorly conceived the SIXAXIS controller is IMO, at times I forget the thing even has motion-sensing, that's how little I actually use it. It's totally different on the Wii though as its remote was designed around motion-sensing, it wasn't tacked onto a bog-standard controller design last minute like the SIXAXIS' seems to have been. Thus the Wii's implementation works far better although it does have its own shortcomings that don't make it perfect for all games.

That said, even if Lair had been released on the Wii, I still don't think it would have fared much better critically as the game itself had too many flaws, e.g. poorly explained objectives and a horrid framerate, etc.

Charging for the dragons? They should be free to apologise to all those that bought the game.

I bought this a few weeks ago, and as a Wii lover, I thought the controls were fine.

Its a good game for me, definetly as good as the rogue squadron games were back in the day.

    Irony.

Lair had amazing graphics, amazing soundtrack, innovative gameplay and a different/intresting concept... the problem was the six-axis control scheme, now that they will fix it, i'm very tempted to buy the game, i hope IGN, Eurogamer etc... can do a new review.

Well I'll download the patch but I'm certainly not interested in buying a couple of new dragons; they're almost pointless additions IMO.

Anyone asking for a re-review, go back and read the original one. Not just the score, the actual words, like this bit:

"Even with the controls mastered, even with the numerous technical flaws ignored, the game remains shallow and repetitive, devoid of drama and reliant on sound and fury to disguise the fact that at its heart is a rather shoddily constructed collection of hoary old clichés."

Adding proper controls will do nothing to change the fundamentally flawed gameplay. What are you hoping for, an upgrade to 5/10?

with the control scheme fixed "unless people are retarded, biased as hell, or have never even played the game and just like to talk utter crap", in no way LAIR can only score 4/10... with it's production values and gameplay improved, it should at least score 7/10.

By the way, they say in the review something like "This sea serpent looks impressive, but acts like every other end of level boss ever. Find the pattern, repeat until dead"... lol... if that's true and becomes such a big motive to diss the damn game, then what should we think about Assassins Creed??? that game was the most tedious and repetitive game i've ever played and yet it deserved 7/10.

Checked out the ign impression of the Lair patch... it still sounds a bit meh really. Sixaxis control is NOT fully removed, meaning you still need it to do 180's and stuff. Basically seems like a doomed game all in all. Hopefully this will save some people some bargain bin cash which could be better spent towards other games, I think I can happily live life without Lair in it.
