Sony tots up SingStar sales News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

28 April, 2008

Sony is bragging that karaoke series SingStar has shifted more than 12 million copies around the world.

Apparently five million were sold between April 2007 and March 2008, while its online SingStore flogged more than one million tracks in the first four months.

Sony has also seen more than 140,000 or you share around 20,000 videos of yourselves singing along to your favourite tracks. Our rendition of "I Try" by Macy Gray is hard to beat.

"SingStar's success is built upon simple and entertaining game play. Historically we have added new music tracks to keep the experience fresh but the arrival of PS3 has allowed us to think differently," said series creator Paulina Bozek, whose name you can find on the leaderboards in SingStar PS3. And she must be rubbish if those are her real scores.

"We can now take advantage of the next-generation features to take the next step forward in the SingStar experience," she added.

Sony recently announced that SingStar PS3 will be out in the US on 20th May. Americans will be given a slightly different SingStore than Europeans because of broadcasting standards; we have few, apparently.

Sony plans to update the US SingStore with 25-50 songs each month, and will also focus on independent music from smaller bands. There's even a mention of entire albums being offered up.

SingStar was released last year in Europe to predictably favourable reviews. Little has changed, other than the addition of SingStore, which has finally begun to get recycled songs from previous instalments.

The second PS3 instalment in the series, SingStar Volume 2, will add a harmony mode and remote play support so you can shop for songs and look at other people's videos on your PSP. There will also be around 30 songs added, including "California Dreamin'" by the Mamas and the Papas and "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.

Wow, not many comments. I guess this either isn't a controversial topic, or a good example of the difference between casuals and hardcore in terms of internet/online behaviour.

Which explains why some titles that Eurogamer so fervently warns us against still can get good sales, obviously.

Fortunately, SingStar is absolutely awesome and Eurogamer concurs, so all is right in the world. ;)

I've had hours of fun on these, and (sadly) this was probably the game that pushed me into buying a ps3 rather than an xbox.

EDIT: And the d/l's have cost me a fortune!

25-50 new songs per month in the US SingStore, and no mention of the EU SingStore? Bodes ill, particularily when concidering that Europe is the "core territory" for this franchise.

They should add guitar tracks and other instruments to SingStar, and support the use of any "musical intrument perioheral" that connects to the PS3. So - combine SingsStar and Guitar Hero, and Hey Presto: a Rock Band clone on the cheap! You know; with Rock Band being both rather popular and hilariously overprized in Europe, that would sound like a pretty smart move to me. Would make a nice variant on duets... and for hardcores to handle both singing and strings simultaneously would have to be pretty challenging...

The online thing in Singstar says that the next set of new tracks in the UK is on May 2nd I think.

I wonder if they'll put the whole tracklisting for the disc releases on Singstore, so owners of one or the other can download instead of swapping discs?

Still, those video clips etc are great. So many funny ones, both intentionally and not.

What I find really interesting is the lack of coverage in the media as to why it took so long for Singstar to debut in the USA.

Hint: Rhymes with Poftware Satents

Bitkari: I hadn't heard that before. I assume the patents relate to the Singstore, because they don't seem to have affected the release of PS2 Singstar games in the USA (I know I have 3 of them).
