Internet fingers pointing to Resistance 3.

Sony apparently has a "surprise sequel" ready to unveil this week on GameTrailers TV.

A promo for this Thursday's episode (evening US, Friday morning UK) shows clips of PS3 big-boys Heavy Rain, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2. Is this new game supposed to follow their lead?

The bookies' money is on Resistance 3, after a forward-thinking Sony Pictures film - due next year - decided to advertise the game with a giant, on-set billboard poster. Someone drove past and took a picture.

Pop back on Friday to see what all the fuss is about.

I wouldn't call Resistance 3 a "surprise",rumours have been pointing to this for months,and it was almost guaranteed there was a 3rd. I think it will be something else,something great but not too big (cause they usually save the major annoucements for events or award shows).

Suspect that Resistance 3 would be likely but I'd like to see something else. I enjoyed the Resistance games and both had their merits. I'd like to see the obvious technical skills applied elsewhere.

My bet is on Killzone 3. As 52pickup said, Resistance 3 isn't exactly a surprise. In the meantime we haven't heard anything from Killzone, and yet I'm sure they didn't spend so long on their engine to put out a single game.

Agreed I much preferred the stylised voice over stills approach of R1 to the cut scenes of R2. However the very end was very good in my opinion. Just the last little cut scene. I'd been wanting and waiting for a opportunity to kill your annoying side man for quite a while, for him to be the one who popped a cap in your head was a great finish

If it's R3 it's hopefully with a new engine. The last game aped HL2 in places but the graphs looked worse than what the much older Source engine could manage.

I'm hoping it's not a killzone or resistance game as i wouldn't call them a suprise. I've heard talk of LBP2 what with sony's recent aquisition but i doubt it will be. I'm hoping it'll be something completly out of the blue.

I know in my head it will be something boring like another Resistance or another KZ, but when I hear of a Sony reveal my heart stupidly always keeps hope alive that Sony will see the error of their ways and will announce G-Police 3 or a new Colony Wars.

Fucking hell I hope not. Insomniac are fantastic developers but they've failed twice with Resistance, just stick to Ratchet and Clank and make a sequel to that, please! Or another platformer with great humour and top gameplay.

Jak 4 would be the one sequel I'd love. Naughty Dog need to get stuck in on that!

I thought the 2nd Resistance was nowhere near as good as the 1st one, it tried too much to be like Halo with only 2 weapons set-up and recharging health.
Resistance: Fall of Man had it own identity and will always be a cult favourite of mine.

@BritishBlue1 : Could not agree more. R1 was better in most areas - just had a slow start and looked like a average WW2 shooter to many people. Online was superb! With R2, they tried to imitate Modern Warfare to much - especially online. Online co-op in R2 was great though - I hope they bring that back and expand it for R3!

although sony says its a suprise sequel, it doesnt neccesarily mean its a sequel to a current gen game. id love to see a sequel for for zone of the enders, parappa the rappa, or even warhawk or wipeout. resistence 3 and killzone 3 are far too obvious. we all know theyre coming at some point, just like the next halo game.

Its a good bet that they are gonna announce both KZ3 and R3 this year, the overlapping audience for these games is prolly why they may announce one now and another at E3.

If I was to guess Id say its R3 this week for a november release, and a trailer KZ3 announcment at E3 for a march 2011 release

Resistance 3 taking the best bits from R1, a smaller amount from R2 but with graphics on a par with KZ2 due to them dropping to 30fps. Hopefully the controller lag will be less than KZ2 and more like the first 2 Resistance games.

No? How about PD announces they've started work on GranTourismo 6, and after 6 months and 10 million dollars they've created the most realistic license plate for a '96 Imprezza the gaming world has ever seen.

I keeed, I keed. (although Parappa the RaVer might be pretty kick ass)

Seriously though, wasn't there some Twisted Metal sequel rumoring going about a few months ago? I think "suprise" should denote something back-catalog-ish, an IP from PS2 days or prior. As people above have said, a sequel to Resistence or Killzone isn't exactly suprising.

If it is Resistance 3, I'd like to see more of the personality from Resistance 1 come back - less gruff, shouty, bald American soldiers saving the world, and more Grimsby fish markets please!

Oh, and bring back the "magic backpack" too - as the first Resistance game was based around clever new weapons, why then take away player choice over what guns to use, and when? Really didn't like being restricted to the now standard, and boring 2 guns system.

@farticusmaximus: well on the new game front the following is either out or coming out: Heavy Rain, MAG, the ICO game (can't remember if it's got a name), 3Dot heroes, ModNation Racers. Most bases are covered for each game type in that list.

I reckon it may be the inFamous sequel, as I don't think that has been officially announced. Failing that, Uncharted 3 - I can't imagine that it is anything ground-breaking.

I would have like a decent sequel to Resistance but I think R2 sort of killed most of my interest in that series. Even if they did do a similar game to the first one (with campaign co-op!) I think the Chimera have been ruined by too much explanation and all that OTT crap with the giant ships in R2. I preferred them more mysterious and with slightly more sensibly sized military hardware...

Colony Wars 4 would be rather brilliant. The poor game series didn't even get a PS2 incarnation despite Colony Wars 3 being utterly fantastic.

Yar, but Sony Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis for the rest of you) did move onto PS2 games and Colony Wars 1 and 2 originated there. A pity the franchise was neglected after the third game, which was developed by the long-dead Leeds studio along with Wip3out.

As for Jak and Daxter, it's been broken since they've added weapons. Just play Ratchet and Clank instead. If they went back to basics though it'd be brilliant.
