Sony reveals PS Home for PSP News

PSP News by Robert Purchese

24 September, 2009

Sony has unveiled a new online community service for PSP called Room, which will be free and available to all Japanese PSP and PSPgo owners before the end of the year.

Like PlayStation Home, Room allows 3D avatars to be created and room spaces decorated. Friends can then pop over to see what you've done, relaying their thoughts in real-time. "It's rubbish, start again."

Blogs can also be posted, albums compiled and groups of people ushered into circles to share topics in and chat.

Sony Japan will send closed beta invites out to select people over the coming months.

Sony Europe, on the other hand, had no further information to share.

You know, this is one thing I wouldn't mind if they didn't bother bringing it to Europe. Not like all of the other stuff.

If this can tie in with PS3 Home then I suppose its a natural evolution.....but I can see this being a bit pointless.

Also - when are they bringing the functionality to post pictures from your mobile to your PS Home apartment picture frames (not that they are even out in EU land) and also post stuff to your PS Home online page. If your wondering what Im on about just look at the old videos of Phil Harrison when Home was being hyped.

They should sort Home out first.

"PSP Go Home..." as ET never said

"Meh" as most (well three) PSP users said... can't we just have some complete games that aren't missing vital bits?

Home. as nice as it is, seems pointless to me. I have used it perhaps 5 times and no more. There is no reason to use it.

PSP Home sounds like more of the same. I want to play games on my machine, not waste my time in some virtual world.

There is a fine line between wasting time playing a game and wasting time using a games system. The former gives you a sense of achievement, the latter makes you feel like you could be doing something better, more constructive.

What an excellent way to waste cash and dev time :/

Of all the none-game things I use my PSP for, I've never felt the need for anything like this.

I'm surprised they've done so little with home or this new room. If they'd introduced some kind of "RPG lite" into the world it could be awesome. Instead it's a fairly heavyweight lobby system.

If they'd introduced some kind of Pokémon knock-off into the Home world then it'd be thronged.

Unless you had to queue to "battle" your Not-a-mons! Which you probably would have.

Meh,

I bet this is completely separate to the rest of the PSP - ie not integrated in anyway, with no idea if anyone you know is online using the service while you're using the PSP for other activities.

Prove me wrong, Sony...

Oh good god. So that's what they've been up to. And here's me thinking they've been building an awesome store.

I don't know why there's so much hate towards Home.

Personally, couln't give a shit whether it exists or not... it's not my cuppa' tea but I understand that some people like that sort of thing.

I think Japan is getting this because Japan seems to like Home, and also has this white cat thing that is quite successful. The way it's styled and presented though, I'm getting the impression that it's built so that it can be easily rolled out to the rest of the world.

I have no hatred for home, but I do think there are other areas SONY should be concentrating their resources.

People tend to think that they're the sole target for a company and that if they themselves don't like it then it must OBVIOUSLY be a waste of time and money.

The only thing I can think of thats duller than home is home with less stuff, worse graphics, on a smaller screen with one analogue stick.

Er... no - if Home was well implemented - it could be great. It's the shoddy integration of Home with the PS3 that's pathetic. It's just 'typical Sony' all the bloody time.

If they want to plough millions into a service - then make it USEFUL and USABLE. the experience of using home's like a bad joke at the moment.

Perhaps the option to store it on high speed flash memory would help? It would still need better INTEGRATION with the rest of the PS3 OS and experience.

This is silly bs.

What Sony should be doing, is concentrating on getting trophy support onto PSP, so I can bother to finish some of my PSP games. I'm so damn surprised they haven't done this yet, especially with 360 games selling on achievements so much. Such a move might have more of a dramatic effect on PSP games sales.

They need to strike while the iron is hot, because I'm betting that MS will intergrate Zune HD games onto their great Live Gold/Games for Windows accounts with achievements.
