Sony quiet on Gran Turismo 5 track editor

Non-denial denial from platform holder.

Sony has declined to confirm reports that Gran Turismo 5 features a track editor.

"We haven't confirmed this and aren't offering any other comment at this time," a spokesperson for the platform holder told Eurogamer this afternoon.

Over the weekend, E4G reported that the ambitious, long-in-development PS3 racing game would have one.

"Yes it will have a track editor," the site was reportedly told by developer Polyphony Digital. You will be able to rebuild a track from scratch or edit the tracks that are already put in Gran Turismo 5."

Were it to include the option to edit track layouts, that would certainly give GT5 a boost over its main competition, including Forza Motorsport 3 on Xbox 360.

It wouldn't be without precedent either - the Project Gotham Racing series on Xbox 360 didn't let you design tracks from the ground up, but it did allow you to plot your own courses through cities mapped by the developer.

GT5 is due out exclusively for PS3 in Japan next March, with a European release expected around the same time.

Now that would certainly be kick ass, still I would rather they invested their time in improving the AI.
  • woodnotes #3 2 years ago

I'd be surprised despite the dodgy denial. This isn't ModNation Racers and creating a GT track would be pretty complicated I should imagine.
  • IneptPercy #4 2 years ago

Will be easier to put the trees in, they are from the PS1 version.

If this does happen it would be interesting to see how limited you are, there has to be a limit.

If it is ture, Ill just sit back and wait for someone in the "Community" to create the Nordschleife circuit. Hopefully they will have some sort of share thing like LBP.
That is of course if PD havent already got Nordschleife in the game. Played it on forza at the expo and was just brilliant. 13 Miles or something... Great stuff.
  • Freek #6 2 years ago

Doesn't seem likely, especially the part about editing existing tracks seems extremely dodgy. Just think about all that complex geometry, there's no way you'd be able to make a user friendly editor to handle all that.

    @kj66246
I swear I've seen the track on screen on various GT interviews and GT5P interviews.
I'd be shocked if it was not included. Didn't KY himself race on it?
  • JahB #8 2 years ago

    @kj66246
the track was in GT4, i'd presume it made its way over to 5, being one of the most famous tracks and all
  • Milk #9 2 years ago

    never.gonna.happen.

    ever.
  • KayJay #10 2 years ago

@ Roarr & JahB - Cheers chaps. Ill have a look thrhough some of the Vids on the EG gamepage.
Didnt think about GT4 Just browsed the review on here.. "and of course the much vaunted addition of the enormous Nurburgring Nordschleife, which is so big you can barely pick out the turns on the mini-map, and one of the most visceral driving experiences we've ever enjoyed."
I will have to dig that out again. I remember sticking this in the BC PS3 and it being a little "sticky" I might have to grin and bare it just for that.

Would make mod nation racers seem a complete waste of time!
  • Negotiator #12 2 years ago

How can this compete with the incredible Forza 3, it can't.
  • DrDamn #13 2 years ago

    @GamerG
So you know nothing about ModNation Racers then.
  • altitude2k #14 2 years ago

I suspect this to be more along the lines of the PGR3 track creator rather than a full-blown environment editor.
  • NotSoSlim #15 2 years ago

Apparently confirmed by PD over on n4g!! Would be insane for rally mode n NASCAR mode also
  • funkateer #16 2 years ago

There's hoping Polyphony didn't notice this rumour thinking "great idea, let's delay a few more years and put it in!"
  • BritishBlue1 #17 2 years ago

Now that is an eye-brow raising feature, considering how many die-hard fans the GT series has the designs could be phenomenal. Let's hope it's true!
  • uglygamer #18 2 years ago

Add a dose of speed to the gameplay, make it a bit more fun and IMPROVE THE AI aswell as adding the track editor could mean it takes the crown as the best racer from Forza 3, which is a fantastic game but only the graphics hold it back from getting a 10/10

It's -easy- to see on the released gameplay vids so far that the AI (still!) completely motherfuckin sucks. If it's the same in the retail release (I really hope it's not) it will definitely give me reason to reconsider my purchase.
  • psousa #20 2 years ago

I agree with the whole criticism over the (lack of) AI. When I saw the footage of GT5, and the AI cars still follow a predefined path, even if you're right in front of them, I was really disappointed. Don't get me wrong, a Track Editor would be a nice feature, but it's just a gimmick. IMHO AI and a better physics engine on collisions (I hate that wall bouncing) should be the top priorities.
  • SAH1977 #21 2 years ago

Consider this, GT5 reportedly 'only' has 20 or so locations, while PD has spent huge amounts of time producing cars and implementing features, it's unlikely we'll be suprised by 100+ tracks.

Then you have the WRC licence, it should be quite simple to have a track editor for point to point stages, especially when you consider the scenery will be similar for the duration of a stage, whether it's a 2 mile stage or 20 mile stage.
  • Verminox #22 2 years ago

How do you want the AI to improve? If you watched the newest GT5 demos you would see that the AI brakes late into corners, if you nudge them when overtaking they then nudge you back when they've caught up.
  • ronuds #23 2 years ago

What exactly does "REbuild a track from scratch" mean? If you're building a track from scratch, usually you'd just say you were building it. "Rebuild" makes it sound like it isn't a complete editor, or maybe I'm way off?
  • smelly #24 2 years ago

I *loved* the original GT - but i admit to not playing any sequel.. Now i have a ps3 i'm tempted.. but watching videos recently told me it hasnt aged well at all (looks like the cars float around the track/sliding around walls/etc)..

We'll see.. ModRacers looks ace though! Day 1 buy
  • dominalien #25 2 years ago

If true, this will be a very nice feature.
  • smelly #26 2 years ago

?? I might change my name - seems that people are negating me no matter what i say!
  • RobTheBuilder #27 2 years ago

Ahh, at last something that's made me interested in GT5! ;)

It will probably be similar to PGR, where you have the multi layout circuit (such as Silverstone or Catalunya) and you choose which bits to use.
  • Murton #28 2 years ago

In the previous GT games there were variations of tracks which used various detours, racing "backwards" or the start/finish line was moved to another place on the track. If I was to hazard a guess this would be the level of customisation we'd likely see, the ability to choose which detours available on a given track were to be used/not used, the direction of racing and position of start line. These would all be relatively simple to implement in a user friendly way, I very much doubt we'll see something that allows a full scale track to be built from scratch.
  • Caimbeul #29 2 years ago

Why so nagative? It wouldnt be that difficult to make a user friendly track editor... LBP is a great example of bringing complex editing tools to everyone. Even if it was a little bit tricky, there are plenty of talented people out there ready to create and share!

I am honestly surprised that more people arent drooling at the prospect (if it is indeed more than just pie in the sky rumours)
  • Felwyn #30 2 years ago

as long as I can download SOMEONE ELSE'S hard work for free, I'm happy.
  • darren1976 #31 2 years ago

Track editor would be a nice touch for the hard core fans, of course the most important thing is to sort out the collision handling and AI. If they have brought that up tp FM3 standards then this game will be guaranteed a 9 at least as no know doubt the car models will look great.
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #32 2 years ago

The Gt series has already had multiple layouts of certain tracks. Adding an editor to change where certain bits of Armco, or lines of cones go would not be too much of a stretch. They've supposedly got the Top Gear test track in there, and that's just some lines and tyre Walls drawn on an airfield taxiway, so there's a fair bit of potential customisation for the likes of that.

    Or, what Murton said.

(no editbitton on the new iPhone app)

@smelly - ?? I might change my name - seems that people are negating me no matter what i say!

it does seem a bit unfair but to be honest you have brought it on yourself!

Edit: oh and I agree modnation racers does look ace.
