Sony pals with Fahrenheit dev

Quantic gets all emotional.

Sony is giddy with excitement after revealing a new collaboration with Fahrenheit developer Quantic Dream.

Details on the actual game are scarce, but it will be a PS3 title "expected to set a new benchmark in delivering emotionally compelling experiences to gamers", in Sony's words. So, probably another story-based action adventure, then.

"We always believed that 'next generation' meant more meaningful content based on players' emotional involvement," said David Cage, big cheese at Quantic Dream. "To us, PS3 is the only platform that can truly deliver on this promise, and Sony Worldwide Studios is both inspiring and pleasant to work with."

Fahrenheit appeared on PC, PS2 and Xbox at the end of 2005 to wide critical acclaim. It tells the story of a man who commits murder and is convinced he was possessed and unaccountable for his actions. The yarn was fabulous, but it was let down slightly by the frustrating action sequences.

If any developer could pull off the somewhat over-emphasised emotional content in the announcement, then Quanitc would be our pick.

Head over to our Fahrenheit review to see why.

I don't get it from reading the article... what exactly happened? Sony bought Quantic Dream? Sony will distribute Heavy Rain? Heavy Rain will be a PS3 exclusive? Did they really say so little in their announcement?

Or is there some connotation to the word collaboration that I missed, being stupid and all?

Hopefully this doesn't mean the Nomad Soul 2 is going to be a PS3 exclusive...
  • lambtron #5 5 years ago

I thought Nomad Soul was good.

And Fahrenheit was utter, utter rubbish.

Maybe if you're the sort of person who values story over gameplay then its alright but if not its garbage.

    IMO ;).

Wasn't there a video of pre-rendered stuff a while back by these guys? - featured a woman being screen tested etc, called something like The Origami Killer or somesuch.

Also, I had to stop playing Farenheit towards the end - it just got really rather silly. Started so well n 'all.

Fahrenheit was an amazing game, that was a joy to experience.... in the first half of it at least, the storyline went batshit insane from halfway through onwards.

Keep it close to reality, and you have a winner.
  • Raziel #8 5 years ago

Yeah, there is a demo of a woman like that. But as far as I know that doesnt really have a connection to the game, just an early engine test.
    Pretty impressive I'd say.

    That wasn't pre-rendered.

Fahrenheit had so so much potential, thrown away by those awful action sequences. Fighting the final boss as Q.T.E was ridiculous: you'd think the developers would want you to savour the action of the final conflict, but no, you're too busy looking at what button to press to be able to focus on the action. Add to that the APPALLING shoed-in stealth sequence, the cringe-worthy sex scene, and the AWFUL, IRRITATING cop character, all wrapped up in a plot which got too convoluted for its own good, and you've lost the point of the game.

Fahrenheit was in fact probably one of the most disappointing games ever.

"To us, PS3 is the only platform that can truly deliver on this promise, and Sony Worldwide Studios is both inspiring and pleasant to work with."

I would of thought the PC was the best platform overall but then they can't
charge what they will for a console title.
I also think that quote is butt-kissingly-sick-in a-bucket!

Expect Heavy Rain to be a PS3 exclusive, then...

    Indeed.

Fahrenheit captured a good idea in an average game. Whatever they do next I'll watch with interest but not enthusiasm. A big fat 'meh' from me.
  • imamazed #16 5 years ago

REALLY REALLY want to play Heavy Rain/whatever this game is, but it's still not worth buying a ps3 for.

    I'm going for a 360, still.

They are making a sequel?! o_o
  • FlamingCarrot #22 5 years ago

Fahrenheit was a big dogs cock of a game. So much potential that disappeared into a load of head up its arse pretentious crap. And that sex scene was lamentable and totally out of place. Oh God.....just thought what they could use the sixaxis for..
  • Chaote-Imagicka #23 5 years ago

Now I want it on Wii! That would be so much more fun!

But yeah all this actually says is heavy rain is PS3 exclusive without actually saying that. .>_

We need a clarification on this ASAP.

Is Heavy Rain going to be PS3 exclusive? or nomad soul 2 or whatever game they making after?

If these game are going to be PS3 only then it sucks.
  • Nova5lag #25 5 years ago

Fahrenheit... played it at work in lunch hours and had workmates watching the story unfold. Was actually really enjoyable.

The pressure to be good at the game was too much though! MUST not look shit in front of work mates!!! GAH!

Well I really liked farenheit, but then again im a sucker for overly complicated ridiculous storylines :)

shame this is ps3 exclusive, as it means as il probably never play it unless i manage to blag a free ps3 off someone !
  • Triggerhappytel #29 5 years ago

It seems I am amongst the minority in thinking Fahrenheit was rubbish for 80% of the game.

It was just embarrassing - an awful, awful plot, very little actual 'gameplay', extremely linear (despite what we were lead to believe) and dreadful, numerous QTE sequences.
  • Steroyd #30 5 years ago

If these game are going to be PS3 only then it sucks.

Sucks as much as Fatal inertia from being a PS3 launch title to a currently Xbox 360 exclusive?
  • Les #31 5 years ago

    "extremely linear"

What's wrong with linear?! It's the best way to tell a story. Non-linear games that rely on story don't work.
  • Les #32 5 years ago

"If these game are going to be PS3 only then it sucks.

IMO there can't be enough exclusives. I want titles that really take advantage of the hardware I invested in and not some lazy cross-platform ports. I understand that that means I'll either have to invest in all platforms or will have to miss out on some great games. But I really couldn't care less if it means the general quality of the games is much higher.
  • spongebob #33 5 years ago

Well, that's good news for PS3 owners, fanboys, stock holders, press and me.
  • SimonM7 #34 5 years ago

Nice! In a world of compromise and cross platform development it's nice to see something like this be able to fully tap the potential of ONE console. Especially being something as ambitious as this game.

360 or PS3 exclusive - really doesn't matter which to me.
  • peeetah #35 5 years ago

As a 360 owner and Fahrenheit fan this announcement makes me sad.
  • JediMasterMalik #36 5 years ago

You can be both a 360 owner and a PS3 owner ya know, not too difficult. ;)
  • Wyrm #37 5 years ago

I think everyone agrees on Fahrenheit. It was amazing until it went all supernatural and nuts. The demo section in the diner when you have to get out the murder was GENIUS. The game should have focused on that kind of thing. Hopefully a futyure version will do this.
  • CrumpledPaper #38 5 years ago

It's undoubtedly Heavy Rain. Sony went out of their way to ask Quantic to demo it at E3, even though Quantic was initially reluctant. The description of the game in the press release matches up with Heavy Rain. The demo was just a prototype - and the demo was actually called 'The Casting' - but in interviews at E3, David Cage was quite clear that it represented technology from their next game called 'Heavy Rain'.

As for the moaning, I think some people really need to quickly come to terms with the likelihood that PS3 will have quite a lot of content you're going to want, if you're any sort of serious gamer. It's pretty much the same every generation. I owned every system last gen, and I already own every system this gen, having learnt my lesson that every platform has something to offer.

PS3 is still on the market?, wow I thought that thing would have died after the terrible sales and public backlash. I wish it would hurry up and die so we can talk about the real consoles for this gen, 360/Wii. I guess I can wait another few months. Lair should finish it off.

Yea, to calrify, i didn't mean the game is now not worthy, just upset if it's truely going to be ps3-only tite.

Common, it's a adventure game, you can't not release it to PC as well :\
  • IAmBatman #41 5 years ago

    > and tiresome nerd backlash

    Fixed that for ya'.

    Indeed, blessed ignorance.
  • Martin #44 5 years ago

Farenheit was excellent and especially the story.
  • Noctilucent #45 5 years ago

Having played both games released by Quantic Dream so far, I can safely say that they are a very ambitious developer, overly so, I might add. If you don't pay attention to that David Cage guy, who loves to say something along the lines of "nobody does/is capable of that, we do/are", you can enjoy the games.

They just can't help it. I remember back when Fahrenheit was supposed to be published by Vivendi Universal that they said on their website that no one could say the exact date they will launch a game, but Quantic Dream could and would release exactly on November 21, 2004 or something. We all know that wasn't the case.

"To us, PS3 is the only platform that can truly deliver on this promise".

What a load of fucking nonsense.
  • dudefella #47 5 years ago

Hmmm... chalk one up for Sony, as I loved Fahrenheit, and moreover the potential of Quantic Dream. Get rid of the stealth sections, constant rhythm games and silly endgame and you've got a real winner!
  • Khab #48 5 years ago

Crap. I guess I'll eventually have to get a PS3 then.

I'll wait for a few price drops, mind you. :D
  • SeesThroughAll #49 5 years ago

360 owners who-suddenly-hate-Quantic may rest at ease, some rumours have surfaced that Heavy Rain is going to remain multi-platform. Apparently the PS3 exclusive is to be Nomad Soul 2:Karma. :)
  • UncleLou #50 5 years ago

I didn't know they made Nomad Soul as well - and Fahrenheit was only their second game? Not sure how long ago Nomad Soul was released, but there must be quite a gap between this and Fahrenheit.
  • speedjack #51 5 years ago

"We always believed that 'next generation' meant pointless console exclusive deals and content based on corporate greed and desperation," said David Cage, big cheese at Quantic Dream. "To us, SCE were able to truly deliver the amount of cash we demanded, and Sony Worldwide Studios are both inspiring, rich, pleasant to work with, and desperate to ringfence quality future I.P. after being given the jump so many times by Microsoft"

Well, I loved Fahrenheit...even if the ending unraveled and the black cop was dangerously close to being too much of a stereotype. And I really want Heavy Rain...but I don't want it badly enough to buy a PS3. I have a 360 and that's my console.

Oh...and I've never had the red ring of death.

"Fahrenheit was in fact probably one of the most disappointing games ever."

    +1.

I don't think I've ever hated a game as much as I hated Fahrenheit by the end. It wasn't just the wacko plot, but also the creeping realisation that event minigames were the entire game, and that the multi-branching puzzle solving pretty much began and ended in the diner.
