Sony in talks to bring more GTA to PSP

Reckons DS sales will be "interesting".

Sony has confirmed there are plans to bring more Grand Theft Auto games to the PSP.

"No one should sleep on that franchise. That’s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general," exec John Koller told MTV.

"We’ve had two that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with Rockstar on all their brands. That’s nothing that’s left the PlayStation family."

That doesn't mean the series isn't appearing on other platforms, of course. First came the Lost and Damned downloadable content for Xbox 360, and now Rockstar is gearing up to release GTA: Chinatown Wars for the DS. But according to MTV, Koller's not so sure it'll suit the audience for Nintendo's handheld, which he reckons is mostly gamers under the age of 12.

"It’s an interesting launch on DS,” Koller said. "It raises some eyebrows in a lot of areas. It’ll be interesting to see how that sells."

GTA: Chinatown Wars is out here on 20th March.

I wouldn't mind more GTA games on the PSP. Heck, for all I care, they could experiment on doing something new with the franchise.

Is 'interesting' a euphemism for 'huge'?

    Cheeky cunt.

Yeah, because there's plenty of 11 year olds training their brains, learning how to cook and reading classic literature.

Given there were GTA games on the Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color, it's hardly that surprising that there's now a DS one is it?

    San Andreas Stories?

The best thing about LCS and VCS was they were ported to the PS2. I wouldn't mind a SAS, but would it make it to the PS2 or go direct to the PS3? (Have Sony gone that way yet?)

How many 18-rated DS games are there out there right now? Off the top of my head I can't think of one, so I think Koller has a point in wondering how big this market actually is.

    San Andreas Stories?

Isn't Chinatown the first Mature rated DS game?

Koller does have a point in saying that it'll be interesting to see how it sells.

It'll be the first UK 18 rating, I think, but there are ESRB M rated games. Resident Evil, Dementia, Touch The Dead and Mortal Kombat.

Sony remembers that it has a portable gaming device shocker!

under 12? how can this person say that with a straight face? i mean really, sounds quite desperate to me, considering the facts that state otherwise. i guess this is just another example of a sony pr guy with his head buried in the sand pretending they are still some sort of 'official leader' of the industry.

How does the rating of the games on a system dictate the make-up of the userbase?

Anyone with a brain knows that the DS sells to all ages and the reason it's done so well is that it's not just the kids or the teenagers buying it.
  • suicida #15 3 years ago

I'm probably gonna buy a DS just for Chinatown Wars...
  • makeamazing #16 3 years ago

I dont see an issue with saying many of the DS users are young, I would say the large majority are under 18, or moms, grannies etc who want to do knitting programs :D... this is one of the first adult games to come out on the device (that i know of) and i would agree that it would be interesting to see how it will sell.

Of course there seems to be a growing number of teenagers who want to play Pokemon and Animal crossing type games (What happened to the youth of today!!!!)

fucksake is he claiming only over 18s bought GTA for PS2?
  • Cloud-Strife #18 3 years ago

Tempted to get it out of spite...
  • Kinkster #19 3 years ago

Well, I'm 32 and it will be the first game I've bought for the DS in a good 12 months or so....
  • Santino #20 3 years ago

so you didn't buy layton then :(
  • Sutekh #21 3 years ago

Well, he does have a point. The DS does have a lot of good games, but not many which you could claim were intended solely for a mature audience, outside of titles like Brain Training and the 100 Classic Books one.

Regardless of that, it'd be nice to see some more GTA on the PSP. San Andreas stories wold be good. Or a visit to modern GTAIV Liberty City. Sony should make the first two GTA Stories available on PSN while they're at it. And the PSOne versions.

I'll probably buy a DS Lite just to get Chinatown Wars too. And GTA Advance.

The two PSP versions of GTA are the best I've ever played, and I even prefer them to the various PS2 versions and GTAIV. I don't know why, but it just seems to work really well on the PSP.

    "San Andreas Stories? "

Oh god yes please Rock Star!!

Apart from emulators LCS and VCS are practically the only things I ever play on my PSP so more GTA is 100% welcome!
