Sony declines to comment on Killzone 3

Report says game out next year.

Sony has declined to comment on rumours that Killzone 3 is "deep in development" and will be released next year.

This is in response to Official PlayStation Magazine's "The Secret Games of 2010" article (via Destructoid), which claimed readers could "pencil in" Killzone 3 as well as Resistance 3 and a Call of Duty: World at War sequel.

Killzone 2 launched in February this year and earned 9/10 here on Eurogamer.

Resistance 2 was of similar calibre, and appeared a few months earlier that Killzone 2, in the autumn of 2008. Insomniac has just finished work on Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, which Ellie is reviewing as I type.

Activision rotates Call of Duty duties between Treyarch and Infinity Ward. The latter will deliver Modern Warfare 2, so Treyarch presumably has something in the can for next autumn.

"Resistance 2 was of similar calibre, and appeared a few months earlier that Killzone 2"

    WUT?!

    Killzone 2 == Mediocre.
Resistance 2 == Utter dross shite.

I couldnt really careless, Killzones universe is inconsistant and unimaginable!
  • Aretak #3 2 years ago

I loved Resistance 2 in both single and multiplayer, but I couldn't get on with Killzone 2 at all.
  • lambtron #4 2 years ago

I liked Killzone2, Resistance not so much. In any case I'd be surprised if we didn't see another installment of both.
  • SeesThroughAll #5 2 years ago

Maybe you should change that to "Rumour says game out next year".

Even with a working engine, a new game would need to be designed practically from scratch. That's too much work to be done in just less than two years.

The PSM article was clearly speculation.

lolz, I wonder if I should search for my "I have decided to buy KZ2 rather than COD as there won't be a KZ released every year" comments...
  • Zebula77 #7 2 years ago

That these games will get sequels is a no-brainer. Both good games that did good business.

Is anyone really going to play the CoD W@W sequel if MW2 is as good as its been made out to be? KZ3 next year, I'd prefer them to polish it up a bit more enjoyed KZ2 and would hate them to spoil anything by rushing the next one out of the door. As for resistance I've only played the first one and couldn't care less!

"Even with a working engine, a new game would need to be designed practically from scratch. That's too much work to be done in just less than two years. "

GoW2 was done in less than two years, ODST was done in almost a year. When the universe rules are set, the engine finished & mastered by the artists, developing something more of the same can be done pretty quickly.
  • Negotiator #11 2 years ago

Going head to head with Halo Reach, oh dear me, not a wise move at all Mr Sony.
  • Gregolution #12 2 years ago

@Charlie789 - you'd prefer they polished up KZ2 more? I feel like KZ2 was the best supported game I've bought on the PS3. There have been loads of patches and map DLC, I couldn't ask more of Guerilla Games.

It's great news if they are developing KZ3, imagine if they can put all their efforts into game play, story, multiplayer modes etc since they already have the basics of the world and engine done. Just think of Uncharted 1 -> Uncharted 2 in quality difference.
  • Xerx3s #13 2 years ago

"That these games will get sequels is a no-brainer. Both good games that did good business. "

I don't know, KZ2 did 1,5 million up till now? That isn't exactly stellar sales in terms of an FPS & 1st party. Having a full team working on that for 4 or 5 years with those sales doesn't leave a very large margin. But that in itself would make it all the more likely that they would use the same engine to push out a sequel relatively quickly.
  • GreyBeard #14 2 years ago

    @seesthroughall

Its very possible actually, it just depends on the scope of the project and the number of staff Guerilla want to throw at the job.
With an engine and level authoring pipeline in place its largely a matter of generating content, and realistically that can be outsourced heavily if time is an issue.

  • Stifler #15 2 years ago

I was really hyped by KZ2 (more in hope as my PS3 lay unused) and while waiting tried R2, it really was incoherent and poorly executed.

The exploding magnum rounds were a nice touch however, but the enemies were uninteresting to fight against and the equipment a joke.

kill zone 2 really disappointed the AI was poor (and i seem to remember constant re-spawning enemies in sections?) and the gun play brought nothing new to the table. It did look stunning, however it was just a by the numbers shooter in my book and towards the end i really was just trudging through it....
  • cianchristopher #16 2 years ago

I love the way Insomniac crank 'em out year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year

That's real quality control right there for ya ;)

Resistance was a run-of-the-mill shooter whose saving grace was that it was a launch title, Resistance 2 showed them to be no better than any other mediocre FPS developer (we're talking 5 or 6 out of 10 here)....
  • Mercatoria #17 2 years ago

I agree with Kevvymetal Killzone 2 wasn't that good.
  • Peew971 #18 2 years ago

So that means Killzone 3, World at War 2, Resistance 3 and Halo Reach all against each other... There's gonna be some blood.
  • SeesThroughAll #19 2 years ago

@Xerx3s: Those are indeed good examples, so maybe it is indeed not that far-fetched that they could produce another title in less than two years.

killzone for me has been the best FPS shooter story, gameplay, multiplayer wise and sound love it and i hope they do bring out a 3rd but dont water down or milk the series.

In this day and age, any profitable franchise will be milked. Just pick your favorite games regardless.
  • Inquisitor #20 2 years ago

Makes sense. The majority of the technical work was completed with the first so, like ODST, they could just concentrate on story and missions and produce a new one fairly quickly. Given the amount Sony probably spent on the game it makes financial sense too. No point spending years on a new engine when the first hasn't dated yet.
  • Ryze #21 2 years ago

It's almost a certainty that Sony will seek to recoup their costs by releasing several games which use the Killzone 2 engine.

The easiest game to make using that Engine would be Killzone 3, as much of the current game's assets can be recycled. The multiplayer component can also be recycled.

It's almost an absolute certainty. How many copies did Killzone 2 sell last week? If Killzone 3 came out next week, would it sell more?

    Er...

I'm surprised we haven't seen 5 different GTA spin-offs yet that play differently but use the same engine. I suppose The Warriors, Midnight Club, Bully etc are examples of such games...

Loved KZ2 and the Resistance games (R1 more than R2)... so sequels for both next year sounds great :)

Hopefully they both will feature more inventive singleplayer campaigns...
  • 52pickup #23 2 years ago

Killzone 2 was the first FPS game i have ever bought/played. I really enjoyed it. It's a good game, worth a look, especially since you can pick it up quite cheap now (i payed £22 for mine, about 3 months ago).
  • bad09 #24 2 years ago

Never played the first, found the second completely forgettable so much so I couldn't be bothered to play through it in the end. Won't bother with a third

I understand people liked it and it must have sold well, but Sony. Sony, Sony, Sony.....Look further back into the brands history. PLEASE FFS do something else and stop concentrating on this late PS2 stuff.
  • makeamazing #25 2 years ago

Going head to head with Halo Reach, oh dear me, not a wise move at all Mr Sony.

Ah thats right Sony shouldnt relase any 1st party products next year then because MS are releasing games too... DOH ;)

I cant see sony being that much of a hurry to make a 3rd killzone after the relative failure of the big budget sequel

And here comes Donnie.... its sold what a million or so... not as good as they expected but as more and more people buy a PS3 the likely hood is there is a larger userbase to buy the game... (look at uncharted 2 first week sales) you really have no common sense do you. Please do us all a favour, sell your "invisible" PS3 and stop posting in PS3 topics...

  • freakzilla #27 2 years ago

Why? KZ was nothing special and didn't sell that many copies. There's really no point wasting any more money on GG. The money would be better spent on devs who have demonstrated they're capable of more than just good graphics.
  • makeamazing #28 2 years ago

Now we have two donnies.... thats all we need...lol

I prefered KZ2 to Resistance 2... I really felt RS2 was quite poor and really not upto the standard. Perhaps R3 will be much improved...
  • PoundHound #29 2 years ago

KZ2 was the first game I played on the PS3, just last week there. After the huge hype and outstanding review scores I was stunned and actually a bit miffed that it isn't really that good (so far). I do have real difficulties with the PS3 controller so I understand that my button-fuckery has something to do with my inability to move around and interact in the game with any great meaning. However, it took until the end of the 3rd level - defending a plaza or something - before there was a semi-exciting set piece and graphically it doesn't actually look "all that". IMO.

As a new PS3 owner, I couldn't care less if there was a 3rd one. Roll on Unchrted 3 however. Now that's a game!
  • el_pollo_diablo #30 2 years ago

"Treyarch presumably has something in the can for next autumn."

By can I presume you mean toilet?
  • Benno #31 2 years ago

No, COD 7. It'll be half decent as well, like WaW.
  • el_pollo_diablo #32 2 years ago

    Half decent is absolutely correct.
  • cianchristopher #33 2 years ago

Methinks the new COD by Treyarch will be a Vietnam game. Hopefully they're done with WWII!

I read somewhere that they've been buying up the licences for all those classic 'Nam-era rock tunes (Creedence, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds).

A COD game like that'd be mucho cool!
  • GamesConnoisseur #34 2 years ago

R2 was more of a disappointment for me, one playthrough was enough and had enjoyed R1 far more, didn't move forward enough. Killzone2 was far better but the control lag as featured in digitial foundary article illustrated why I found the control to be an issue and hoping devs can tackle and improve this for KZ3. Please don't accept the tired excuse of giving weapon 'weighs' when fast turnings with a simple hand guns is harder to achieve the head shots than it is with other FPS!

Control lag is and always been the real reason, and spawnings become more noticeable, as a mean to overcome limited no of npcs on screen at any times, this is same for most or all fpsbut better covered perhaps? Still KZ2 is the better game.
  • Beano #35 2 years ago

"R2 was more of a disappointment for me, one playthrough was enough and had enjoyed R1 far more, didn't move forward enough."

Agree - but co-op in R2 was brilliant... hopefully a element they will build on for R3.
  • Dave52 #36 2 years ago

R2 and KZ2 were both excellent. More please...
  • Les #37 2 years ago

Which reminds me I still have to play 2... Haven't played games in weeks TBH, too much time spent watching the baseball post season and keeping up with other hobbies.
  • _LarZen_ #38 2 years ago

Hope they make Killzone3 a good game....since KZ2 was kinda crap.
  • penhalion #39 2 years ago

Resistance 2 was of similar calibre

Er no it wasn't. It was ruined by invisble charging monsters and creature AI that ignored your squad mates in favour of a suicide rush or full on assault straight at the player. I even showed this to a sceptical friend by triggering a rush of those skinny half converted creatures then ducking around a far away corner while my squadmates stood directly in front of them. Lo and behold every one of the creatures came barreling round the corner like my squad mates didn't exist!

Seriously it's annoying to have Killzone 2 lumped in with the shoddy crap that was resistance 2 (not talking about multiplayer here before people start shouting)!

"Sony declines to comment on Killzone 3"

Confirmed! It'll be out next year :-D
  • Xerx3s #41 2 years ago

"So that means Killzone 3, World at War 2, Resistance 3 and Halo Reach all against each other... There's gonna be some blood."

Not really. A) Apart from one COD7, they aren't on the same platform and B) It's pretty obvious what the expected sales will be.

"Killzone 2 was the first FPS game i have ever bought/played. I really enjoyed it."

I hope you play more FPS games if you liked KZ2. MW2 is out next month for a starter.
  • woodyrulesok #42 2 years ago

    Horses for courses.
I thought Resistance 2 was awsome, clocked up well over 120 hours on it so far.
Really enjoyed KZ2 as well. Although I have only played the single player campaign as I haven't had the time to go online with it.

R3 and KZ3 would both be welcome by me.
  • Lord_Gremlin #43 2 years ago

Wow. They declined PSP Go, PS3 Slim, now they decline Killzone 3. Very well, I'm informed.
  • drumbaby #44 2 years ago

I loved Resistance 2. Killzone 2 was a technical masterpiece, a showcase for all things Cell/ RSX....but because it didn't have a cool narrative I couldn't be bothered beyond mission 5. It felt even more mission-based (interchangeable missions that can be played in any order) than COD 4...yet another fps I couldn't quite summon up the energy to finish.

Give me a story driven fps game any day...and with damn fine online co-op to boot.
  • Les #45 2 years ago

"It was ruined by invisble charging monsters"

I really enjoyed those, kept you on your toes instead of just charging in running and gunning, just because you can. Agree on monster AI, though the best solution IMO is no AI squad mates at all.
  • MeBrains #46 2 years ago

does the 360 come with the tagline "superior online multi plat visuals etc" printed on the box?!

gears2 sold more in a weekend than K2 in its lifetime... hmm... why is that?

Because 360 is the platform of choice for FPS lubba's, that's why! And why do FPS's sell that well on 360?

Because the americans where 360 reigns PS3 are FPS lubba's, that's why!

edit: damn I'm smart compared to some others!

and while I am editing... had a good laugh with this "complete bell end" thing. thanks edwin.

    Yes?
  • cianchristopher #48 2 years ago

Bear in mind that for many PS3 owners, the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player first-and-foremost!

Fuck all games have sold huge numbers on the PS3; certainly nothing has ever come close to Xbox 360 numbers in terms of sales....
  • chessboxer #49 2 years ago

According to donnies080208's logic (the more you sell, the better the game) Wii Sports must be the greatest game ever as it has sold over 50 million copies.

So since no other game on the PS3 or 360 is even close to touching that kind of achievement, should developers for those platforms stop making games?
Wii Fit pissed all over Halo 3's lifetime sales in a much shorter time (Wii Fit was released 8 months after Halo 3) so should MS forget about their future Halo based games?
Should Naughty Dog forget about Uncharted 3?
Should Kojima forget about future MGS games (including Peace Walker and Rising) and not to even consider ZOE3?

    I thought not.
  • cianchristopher #50 2 years ago

I'm pretty sure I read some where that Insomniac have opened another studio. Hopefully, if true, this will mean that they can still pump out a game a year but be able to give each title more time. R2 was an ambitious game that was ruined by being produced in one year, rather than two.
  • patchbox360 #58 2 years ago

It's awkward to see that 75 people are responding to Sony declines to comment on Killzone 3 News
