Sony coy on PlayTV date, price

Amazon listing a phoney?

Sony has declined to comment over suggestions that PlayTV will be out on 31st July and cost GBP 60.

It was responding to a listing on retailer Amazon.co.uk, which has since retracted both the date and price for the telly-recording PS3 peripheral.

"We have yet to announce a release date and price for PlayTV, and do not comment on rumour or speculation," a spokesperson for Sony told Eurogamer.

PlayTV was unveiled for PS3 at the Leipzig Games Convention last August. It lets you watch and record digital TV broadcasts independently of each other, storing content on your hard drive.

Earlier this year retailer HMV predicted the peripheral would cost GBP 99.99, and be out at the end of March. But Sony rubbished this, too.

The only official word is that PlayTV will be out sometime this year.

    £50 and I'll buy it.

Any cheaper, it will sell very well.

    Make it so Sony!

Can someone from Eurogamer ask Sony what orifice the PSP GPS attachment disappeared into.
That was also announced at Leipzig and promised for Spring 08, which should be around now.

I'm interested in getting this before I go on holliers in May.

it always seems to take sony absolutely ages to release anything after it initial announcement.

Play TV, Go!Explore, LBP, echochrome. These have all been shown and annouced as coming soon miles before being finally released.

If I'm not much mistaken, it's only going to support DVB-T anyway (the initial version at least), isn't it?
That's pretty much going to be useless here in Denmark, unless you can live with a couple of channels. Give us DVB-C and I might be interested - though it's not like I really have anything to complain about with my current digital HD set-top box.
The recording features of PlayTV sound pretty neat though.

Miths: Yes but in 2009 the gatekeeper and DR will launch a lot of free and pay channels (not supported by PlayTV yet). Otherwise just enjoy 30 free German channels, if you live in the southern part of Denmark, or 8 Swedish if you live in Copenhagen.

I'll buy this, but Sony should really tell us the release date.

I can confirm that this device will be out when PSP's tilt sensor rolls out. You know, the one promised years ago...

@ neilch - Got me a Samsung 20" SM2032MW HDMI monitor last week. I don't think there's better value on the market, £200 at Richer Sounds. Every possible connector, PIP on PC display, 16:9 support which is a rarity, many monitors just stretching PS3 to 16:10. And straight away compatiblity with PS3, without any 'not optimum resolution' message nonsense. It's basically a monitor designed having learnt from past lessons on gamer use. One display for PC, PS3, other consoles to it you want (also has Component, composite, SCART, RF, and VGA), clean, efficient. Highly recommended, and I'm very glad I waited this long to get a display without any compromises.

I actually think they enjoy teasing their customers.

    SIXTY POUNDS!

For a USB DVB stick that you can't even use when playing games?

    Are they mad?
    Are Sony fans mad?

Be interesting if they actually built it into a PS3 model too, perhaps.

Having already got Sky+ I have no need for this device, although I would have considered it as it looks pretty nifty.

    @ShiftyGeezer

I know what you mean, I've got a M228WA, basicly the same, but 22 inch and made by LG.
6 inputs, built in speakers, HD Ready and you even get a remote.

Best alternative to a actual HD tv

hooray for global warming, lets all leave our ps3's on to record neighbours isntead of using a more efficient STB designed for the job.
