Sony confirms "PS4" videos are fake

Not a nifty PS3 promo campaign either.

Sony has confirmed that trailer videos for "PS4" doing the rounds on YouTube are nothing to do with the company.

"I can confirm that this video is not from SCE [Sony Computer Entertainment]," a PR representative told Game Informer.

The chances of Sony announcing a new home console next week were zero, obviously, but the 3D focus of the videos - one of which you can watch below - led some to believe that it might be a cunning viral campaign for PlayStation 3's expanding range of features, including stereoscopic 3D.

Sony's E3 press conference is on Tuesday 15th June at 12pm PST / 8pm BST, and the company is expected to show off the likes of Killzone 3, and provide more information on PlayStation Move and its 3D products.

Nothing to do with Sony.

    "The chances of Sony announcing a new home console next week were zero, obviously"

    OR WERE THEY?!
  • Shadders #2 2 years ago

    I thought it was odd when the guy in the video wasn't wearing Sony glasses (or indeed shutter glasses from a different manufacturer) that are required to view 3D on a Sony TV.

    But a new handheld console is a different story...:D

    fab advert though, cries for a good budget
  • muziksoulchild #5 2 years ago

    So whens the UK time of the E3 press conference...?
  • lordofthedunce #6 2 years ago

    Anyway Sony were revealing a bunch of stuff this morning including 3D TVs
  • optimusprym8 #7 2 years ago

    AFAIK most 3DTVs won't actually come with 3D glasses and you'll have to buy them separately at a cost of around £50-150 depending on quality / manufacturer.

    Oh and of course, Sony denying a leaked video usually means it's legit ;)

    The PS4 will actually just be a pair of glasses.

    "Oh and of course, Sony denying a leaked video usually means it's legit ;)"

    Nope, when something is legit Sony gives the standard "We do not comment on rumors and speculation... yadda yadda yadda..." speak :)

    Sony wouldn't advertise a future console using a current gen multiplatform game (he was playing MW2) either.
  • callum9999 #11 2 years ago

    optimusprim8: Sony TV's will come with 2 free pairs according to the Sony Store.

    A 'fab' advert for 3D doesn't involve a guy having an epileptic fit of sorts.
  • sonicyoda #13 2 years ago

    Since when was the PS3 a disaster? It certainly took a while to gain some momentum but look at this way, there must be a similar amount of PS3 consoles out there as 360s and Wiis if a game like Heavy Rain can make it to number one.
  • Auyx #14 2 years ago

    Student video me thinks.
  • M_of_the_sys #15 2 years ago

    @sonicyoda

    Don't even bother. It's typical Donnie garbage.
  • 00.00.01 #16 2 years ago

    chessboxer is right, no way SCE would promote their next console with a guy playing a mediocre 2009 multiplatform title. Expect them to show GT6.
    Video is well shot though. Not some amateur.

    *edit: It would probably have Kevin Butler as well, Vice President Next Next Next Gen Console.

    Another site has commented there it'd be silly for Sony to push a PS4 as they're pushing the Move (or is it Motion? I really don't care about the name). Plus, I remember a while ago I read somewhere that they're on a 10-year cycle.

    It'd be stupid for them to come out with a PS4 anyways, while the PS3 is still going strong.

    My guess is this, like a lot of the "banned tv ads" you see on YouTube, was produced by a marketing or advertising firm as a means of demonstrating their creative chops to potential clients. No affiliation with the brand, not intended for public consumption, inevitably leaks to the internet.
  • DoctorFraud #19 2 years ago

    "Since when was the PS3 a disaster?"

    Since it was released. It has singlehandedly brought Sony to thier knees financially, and will never recoup them the costs it has incurred. I doubt even a 100 million install base and 10 year lifespan could get them back in the black.

    Of course if they had software that sold well then they might have a chance. They don't though. 1-2 million unit sales cannot sustain continual 40-60+ million dollar budgets.
  • geeza2020 #20 2 years ago

    ^^^ This quack is talking out of his arse. Have you forgotten about the rather large number of psones and ps2's sony have sold over the years? I tihnk they may still have a few quid left from those.

  • Spekingur #21 2 years ago

    Geeza, he is talking about PS3 not the PSone and PS2. And he speaks the truth, financially PS3 has proven difficult for Sony.

    It speaks nothing of the console itself though - PS3 is quite good.
  • DoctorFraud #22 2 years ago

    "Have you forgotten about the rather large number of psones and ps2's sony have sold over the years? I tihnk they may still have a few quid left from those."

    I can't find the article, but last year a Sony rep was interviewed on thier financial situation and the basic jist of it was that all the remaining profits from the PS2 went into the PS3 plus a substantial amount more, and that they were not expecting the PS3 to break even for them over it's lifetime.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #23 2 years ago

    That's such a good-quality promo - in terms of sound design, photography, lighting, etc - that I wonder if it's been "hijacked" with a bogus PS4 message at the end, but really was for something different (some other company's 3DTV, f'rinstance).

    Having said that, the guy with the glasses isn't the world's greatest actor, and I don't think it does that good a job of making what he's watching seem exciting or scary. It's too naturalistic - it needs to big it up even more.
  • sonicyoda #24 2 years ago

    @M_of_the_sys

    Don't worry man. I'm not trying to fight a corner or anything. I just find the thought process of the console fanboy to be quite funny. It's like they're living under a rock.

    @DoctorFraud

    Think about it man, PS3 can't be doing that bad if Sony have the money to produce the first 3D TVs. I'm not knocking you because internet bickering is one of the most pointless past-times of recent, but seriously; you're telling me you cannot see any evidence that the PS3 hasn't been a massive failure?
  • KayJay #25 2 years ago

    ""since when was the PS3 a disaster?"

    Since it was released."

    You are starting to look like a bit of a fanboy troll.

    @sonicyoda

    "Think about it man, PS3 can't be doing that bad if Sony have the money to produce the first 3D TVs."

    Completely uinrelated. The PS3 has lost Sony's gaming division a fortune, plain and simple. That has no bearing on what products thier electronics division put out.
  • sonicyoda #27 2 years ago

    @DoctorFraud

    I can't speak for Sony's finance division, but if it's anything like the finance division I work for (which is a part of a major, conglomerate company), everything Sony sells effects dealings with every other product. Sony will make its' revenue on a complete, company basis.

    You're quite an angry fellow aren't you?
  • coolbritannia #28 2 years ago

    Anyone pointing to the PS2 as signs of the PS3's inevitable success is mistaken. No way will the PS3 match the PS2's dominance, the 360 has already put that idea to bed.
  • Atropos #29 2 years ago

    I just played a demo of Motorstorm in 3D (I'm on the same floor as a Sony office, so I get to see lots of stuff ahead of time), and I think I may actually be a convert to 3D. I thought it would be nothing but a gimmick, but man, that depth perception really adds to the experience. I actually got butterflies during a particularly huge drop.
  • DoctorFraud #30 2 years ago

    Sony themselves have said they will not make back the investment they have put into the PS3.

    Sony have said it, financial analysts have said it, we all know it. The PS3 is a huge financial burden. This is a fact that your stamping of feet and throwing of toys from the pram will not change.

    The fact that you shed fanboy tears over a balance sheet is pathetic and laughable.
  • monkfishjoe #31 2 years ago

    At the end of the advert (when the guy is sitting shaking), it looks like he is jizzing his pants
  • max75 #32 2 years ago

    forget ps4 ........
    anyone expecting new consol this week,look no further the xbox360 slim with possible natal built in....
  • Stop-gap #33 2 years ago

    PS3 (CECH-210x) units manufactured as of last month are sold for a profit. Hardly what I'd call a "financial burden."
    http://ne ws.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-2000... There was something on EG about it too.
    It's got some repairs to do though, to be sure.

  • SilentNinja92 #34 2 years ago

    I doubt it did come from sony, but whoever made it knew what they were doing. It did have a sony vibe to it.

    That was actually a really good advert though. conveyed how much more immersive 3D could be than standard 2D. better that most adverts which come from game companies and console developers anway.
  • SilentNinja92 #35 2 years ago

    @DoctorFraud

    I think for Sony though its a cost that was well worth paying otherwise theyd have cancelled the console if it was really all that bad, weve seen if before with console manufacturers.

    youve got to look at the bigger picture. for starters this gen will last ages. So the loss incurred may not be fully recouped, but much of it should be clawed back. When you look at what the ps3 did for blu ray vs HDDVD though, then it shows that the ps3 was also part of a plan which will undoubtably bring in huge earnings for sony in the years to come, easily getting back the cash lost with the ps3.

    Factor that in with the recent push for 3D tvs, once again the ps3 is being used to give buyers more incentive to buy these TVs, which will have a knock on effect for all 3D tv producers including sony, and it becomes clear that the ps3 is actually a key piece in bringing in a lot of revenue in other areas which sort of overlap with the video game market.

    Next gen we may see MS using blu ray as it'll be cheaper than making their own format (unless they go fully DD). And chances are the ps4 will just use an updated version of the cell chip so R&D costs will be lower.

    At the end of the day all large companies like these know what theyre doing. In this case its just spending a lot now for a long term benefit.
  • Lamb #36 2 years ago

    I agree with Silent Ninja. The shoe is on the other foot the lack of a standardized hardrive with plenty of space is going to hurt Microsoft not only with DLC but also cross platform games. The decision to stick to dvd instead of hddvd at the time really chomps the disc with all the compression involved.

    Sony took a huge gamble with its design choices and now its paying off. Playing Uncharted 2 multiplayer is a real pleasure on a free network and having wifi built right into the console makes it so simple to connect. You don't have to buy a dongle and a network subscription to begin enjoying multiplayer which makes it easier to buy DLC exclusively for multiplayer.

    The ball is now in Microsoft's court will they up their game or go home?
  • DoctorFraud #37 2 years ago

    "Sony took a huge gamble with its design choices and now its paying off."

    No, it is catagorically not paying off, and it wont pay of for the lifetime of the console.

    They will NOT make back their investment, they will NOT reclaim their market share. The popularity of the 360 and Wii have crushed Sony's previous gen dominance and the PS3 is simply not a good enough console to claw back what they lost.

    The PS3 is the biggest disaster in Sonys history, even moreso than the ill-fated PSX hybrid. This is a cold, hard fact.

    That should have no impact on your enjoyment of it though.

    DrFraud by name.....fraud by nature. Are you finished with your keyboard vomit? Also, why are you so adamant that Sony are in financial strife? Funny, beacuase if you look around they're sposoring every Tom, Dick and World Cup...no money my arse.
  • DoctorFraud #39 2 years ago

    "why are you so adamant that Sony are in financial strife?"

    Sonys gaming division. Why? Because they are. It's fact.

    Why are you trying to pretend they arent?
