Sony chops PS3 sales targets

But gaming profits generally up.

Sony has slashed its full-year sales targets for the PS3 down from 11 million units to 9.5 million, despite strong third-quarter sales of 4.9 million consoles.

Conversely the platform holder has upped its PSP forecast from 10 million to 13 million.

The October to December period net the platform holder an admirable profit of JPY 12.9 billion (~GBP 61 million), which compares well to a naughty loss of JPY 54.2 billion (~GBP 256 million ) for the same period in 2006.

Sony attributed the rise to the PS3 hardware cost reduction and strong PSP sales.

Game sales for the three month period climbed up to 26 million, which turns into a healthy pile of JPY 581.2 billion (~GBP 2.8 billion) - a 38 per cent increase over 2006.

Sony also confirmed that PS2 sales are slowing down, but said the console is still a valuable asset.
