Sony boss praises Ico team's new game News

PlayStation 2 PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

4 August, 2008

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has promised the next game from Fumito Ueda will be "really, really good". Phew.

Ueda, of course, is the man who brought us Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. In the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (as reported on NeoGaf), Yoshida says, "I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, 'I want to make this game.'

"I said, 'Yes, let’s do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it,' so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn't compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn't complete the game because I moved to the United States." What a palaver.

But Ico did make it onto the shelves, and so did Ueda's next game - eventually. "It took four years and the second game took four years too. So I started calling them the 'Olympic Team'," Yoshida revealed.

"They haven’t released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they’ll take four years! But they have something really, really good on the way."

Four years, eh... Well, Shadow of the Colossus was released in Europe in February 2006. Could it be we'll have to wait until 2010 for Ueda's next title? It had better be really, really good.

Wrong! Shadow of the Colossus was released in 2005. So the next project will be finished in 2009, next year.

bar any DLC I may import this from America in 2009 if we're going by the 4 year thing. :P

Semi wrong Released in Europe in 2006 and because of crappy localisation we may not see it on these shores till 2010 anyway.

EU ICO had bonus stuff not in the US version, besides in the end I feel both ICO and SotC were rightly released in the spring, releasing them here inthe run up to Christmas would've been a Beyond Good and Evil disaster, these are critical and cult darlings, not mass market hits. Like the insight that someone who had never made a game before came up with it, this is what the industry needs more of, inviting outsiders to get involved and bring new ideas, and then learn from those already about how to make future games for themselves.

Four years is a long time to wait, but I'm sure Ueda and Team Ico won't dissapoint. I will buy a PS3 for whatever this game is.

Loved Ico and SotC, can't wait to see what's next. With any luck, we'll get the first genuinely great PS3 game.

If they made a game as good as Ico, I'd basically be forced to buy a PS3.

SotC was out in October 05 in the US

Plus this isn't really news, as Yoshida doesn't need to have actually seen anything to know anything Team Ico is going to be hella good

"releasing them here inthe run up to Christmas would've been a Beyond Good and Evil disaster"

i recently picked this up for 99p from ebay due to the recent hyping it got on eurogamer. The controls were horrible (i like inverted controls) and couldnt find any way to improve them Got to admit i gave up on it after about 10 mins.

@zedzee: I can guarantee that it won't come to a rival's platform. Team Ico are a first party SCEJ group.

Shadow of the Colossus is still one the most unique and enjoyable games available on any format. I hope the developers can release something of equal quality for the PS3.

I don't mind waiting, it'll only mean a better game overall if we're patient.

I was trying to fight the Colossus in the lake last night (looked surprisingly lovely in prog scan).

I can't kill it, though. I was lucky my old (2001) PS2 even loaded the game!
