Sony 2009 line-up is "relentless, AAA"

Man also thinks KZ2 will convert 360 fans.

Sony America's Scott Steinberg believes that the company's 2009 line-up is "relentless and AAA-quality", and says to expect "even more excellent titles at E3" in early June.

"Starting it with Killzone 2, we're going to arrest the momentum from competitors with titles like MLB 09: The Show, which some are calling the best sports title ever made. Then in summer there's inFamous and you'll get to see even more excellent titles at E3," Steinberg told GameDaily in an interview focusing on Killzone 2's launch marketing.

"If PlayStation fans thought that we'd rest on our laurels from last year and if competitors thought that we'd punched ourselves out, both are mistaken!"

Steinberg also explained Sony's marketing approach with Killzone 2 - from internal mock reviews (a pretty standard way of checking a game's health) and the decision to launch in February, to the pre-release beta testing and "Bullet" advert - and argued that the game lived up to its billing.

"We feel that Killzone 2 is a tremendous exclusive. It's an exclamation point that demonstrates the distance between the PS3 and other systems. The game is 40GB and could not be done on anything else," he said, which will probably go down well with the 360 fundamentalists.

"It will move people from the sidelines, and from what we've seen from blogs, will push 360 owners to try out the PS3. I think it's going to be a major launch for us and this historical PlayStation brand," he finished. Good luck on the comments thread. Distract yourself by reading our Killzone 2 review again.

    I dread to even say it but, KZ2 ain't all that. Very nice, but it's an 8 out of 10 for me. Sony's straw-clutching grows ever bolder.

    Maybe it's just me, but trying to steal focus worldwide with a baseball game isn't the best plan. Sure, the US love that series, but it's going to do nearly nothing in Europe, and I think Japan have their own baseball game series they prefer.

    As good as Killzone 2 is, it could be done on any other system. Heck, I bet you could get a lower res version running on Wii if you really wanted to (but shouldn't).

    Well MLB 09: The Show is, indeed, excellent but I doubt it will do anything for PS3 sales in Europe since (a) it's baseball; and (b) it isn't officially released over here anyway.

    And while Killzone 2 is great, I don't think it alone is enough to convince 360-only owners to dash out and buy a PS3, not when it costs £299. As it is the biggest deterent is the price of the PS3. I'm sure if it was under £200, more people would be tempted to buy one.

    I think the release of God of War III, Uncharted 2 and other triple A games such as Gran Turismo 5 (whenever that comes out!) will boost the appeal of the PS3 and make it a more tempting buy. Assuming they're all great games that is. I don't think the PS3 needs another Haze or Lair personally. ;)

    That's true of any game though. Halo 3 could run on the Wii with toned down visuals and smaller levels. Crysis could run on the 360 and PS3 with compromised graphics, etc., etc.

    I guess the point is that the PS3 is the only platform that can run Killzone 2 at the visual level it does from a single disc. If it came out on the 360 it would span six DVDs which isn't really practical for a FPS, or have inferior/heavily compressed textures and audio to fit on fewer discs. ;)

    The visuals dont show me anything that can't be done on 360. Texture quality isn't as high as some people seem to make out, its just post processed with (very good) cinema effects to give it that gritty look. What stops it fitting on one 360 disc? Video? Sorry I don't know as I haven't bothered picking the game up yet, am just going on impressions from playing at a mates.

    Before you hobos get out your internet typing fingers of doom, I own both consoles, play both regularly. It's a fantastic fun enjoyable game and probably the most fun single player FPS experience out at the moment (COD4 still wipes it for online), but this "Killzone would Killzone teh 360 these graphicz are s1ck" comments are pish posh.

    I thought we were on about 2009 Sony line-up anyway? Can't call it relentless or AAA without backup, Mr Steinberg/Steiner whatever you're being called this week

    I'm still plodding through the Killzone multiplayer, but that's exactly what I'm doing - plodding. It's just isn't that... exciting. Still, a good game. I'm holding my breath for Unchartered 2!

    Killzone 2 is a visually arresting game yeah, im half way through atm, but i played Gears 2 for the first time in a while yesterday....and it still made me say "Damn this is a good looking game!"......whilst chainsawing a Giant Worms heart out!! :)

    Why people, especially PR stooges continue to spout dribble like "AAA Title X could never been done on out competitors console not in a million billion years!" is anyones guess...

    Yeah we need to chill out, and X360 owners trying PS3 is all good so they can see what the fuss is about and likewise PS3 die hard owners should be brassed up enough to be able to touch X360 and see that its wont mutate them to chavs!

    True that the more there are AAA titles on PS3 such as God of War III, Heavy Rain and so on the more harder it is not to tempt gamers not to get PS3, however the truth is also that if PS3 owners were able to resist getting X360 for its exclusives and say these games stinks or simply not convinced enough to get second console ....then X360 owners can say the same vice versa!

    I m just glad to own all consoles got I m too addicted to the fear of missing out great games! Quite a few games still in their wrappers and must find the time...mutters...

    I bought Killzone. does look pretty but fails to pull me in due total non involvement in the campaign proceedings. Terrible story and pacing (playing Visari Square for 25 minutes with wave after wave of enemies spawning felt more like Space Invaders to me than an exciting 2009 videogame). It get's boring real fast.

    Can't wait for Uncharted 2 tough. I loved the first. And heavy rain and GoW3 could be awesome.

    KZ2 is probably the best FPS game you can get.. on the PS3. If you own a PS3 then you should probably get KZ2. But saying KZ2 is 40gb because it needs it is just BS. If it really takes up 40gb on the BR disc then it's probably just because of some config for the BR drive itself (reading speed). The reason why KZ2 wouldn't work on the X360 is basically (a) programming diffirences and (b) set-up of the game - since it'll probably require an install. Since it has been designed with PS3 in mind from the beginning.

    To be honest, I would probably enjoy being able to play KZ2 on my X360.

    the more i play KZ2 online, the less i like it. who ever thought up the cloaked sniper or the saboteur class are idiots. spawn raping horror of a multiplayer game tbh. i quite like the single player but it's nothing THAT special in the graphics dept. all looks a bit fuzzy to me.

    Don't get me wrong, there are games that can convert. I played Goldeneye at a friends house, and ended up buying an N64 for it. I played Halo, and wanted an Xbox. I played Final Fantasy VII, and bought a Playstation.

    Killzone 2 wouldn't have got me to buy a PS3 if I didn't have one. LittleBigPlanet probably, but not KZ2. I do think it's a great game, but I can't see it converting anyone or selling systems.

    I'm finding the KZ2 multiplayer to be fantastic. I'm loving the way it rolls around the different modes and it is tough. If someone gets you in their sites, you'd better kill them quick. The graphics are astounding and I'm yet to see any lagging at all.

    I thought the campaign was pretty standard fair for an FPS, but the visuals, the sound effects and the feel. Leaves the rest behind - imho, obviously...

    I'm excited about the line up on the PS3 this year, especially Drakes Fortune 2 and God of War 3.

    Jesus Christ - the only thing Sony have been doing for the last 3 years is the bloody ROPE-A-DOPE , of course they haven't punched themselves out, they have been getting battered senseless by MS and Nintendo.

    I think it may very well be the best year for Sony software wise BUT I bet the other two still shift more units.

    I agree with that. For me, the pinnacle of FPS was COD4, but I genuinely think that KZ2 has raised the bar, especially in its online element.

    And it looks beautiful (in all its war-torn ugliness!)

    Could it be done on a 360? I don't really care to be honest. All I know is it HAS been done on the PS3, and it's glorious.

    I like the saboteur and sniper classes (and I haven't even unlocked them yet!). They're fairly easily dealt with once you know how - eg. they both appear as red-dots on your map. If you can't stand the heat, go and shoot Covenant grunts.... ;)

    None of the companies will announce anything major or new 'till GDC or E3 anyway.
    MS tend to announce their big titles very late and Sony will likely be doing the same this time to counteract any big news.

    So let's all chill out for a while, ignore the industry mouthpieces, and wait and see.

    Much to my surprise I quite liked Killzone 2. I prefer the MP to SP. It's very, very simple but it's pretty well done.

    ROFL at MLB though - now there is a title with worldwide appeal ;).

    Scott Steinberg is head honcho for SCEA which is why he's talking to a US magazine about a baseball game.
    While it's not everyone's cup of tea, MLB is a very important game for the US in the same way that FIFA or F1 games are in Europe.

    While KZ2 might not set the world on fire, I do know of 1 XBox360 co-worker who bought a PS3 to play it. So despite what the informed masses on these forums might think, it will shift consoles.

    And as for Steinberg's comments, WTF do you expect him to say? "Our console has slightly inferior gfx to the competition, but this is pretty close to the best they could manage." Cop on, he'd be rapidly unemployed if he didn't talk up the product he's trying to sell. The MS crowd would be no different.

    COD is terrible, it has some of the worst multiplayer maps I have ever encountered and relies utterly on XP ocd as its hook.

    Sony has got a strong line-up this year, can't deny that. If Heavy Rain gets a release that's another game t add to the list, but there's still not enough there to even tempt me to spend £300 on their console. Sony's consoles have never really had anything to get me excited, I like the look of Drake's Fortune, would definetly pick those games up. But beyond those not even the Blueray player gets me interested, of which I'm probably gonna get myself one in the next 6 months gets.

    Microsoft do have a battle this year though, a real battle, all the talk of 2008 being the year of Sony was rather laughable. But so far Microsoft are yet to announce anything really big, well other than Halo ODST (I guess?). E3 will definetly be an interesting year this year, I expect some big announcements.

    I own both consoles and do not believe Killzone 2 lived up to its promise. I sold it after only one week. Poor controls, average single player campaign and badly implemented multiplayer (ie no friends invite system) etc.

    Poor, deluded Scott Steiner. When will he realise that the blinkers are a packaged feature with 360 fanboys?

    Anyway, despite spouting pure drivel I think we should give the guy a break. He is American after all. That aside though, I'm looking forward to the PS3 line up this year. GOW III and Heavy Rain are my two mains to keep an eye on.

    @Widge - COD4 is the first online shooter I've played as I'm not a PC gamer. Briefly tried SOCOM2 on PS2 and hated.

    Can you explain what you mean. I genuinely interested. Would agree that unlocking the P90 on G63C + 3 frags seems to give you a huge advantage.

    I'd rate myself as average at COD4. However I do hate some of the maps. Ambush springs to mind. I just don't seem to know where I am on that map. I also find, that sometimes the game just passes me by. I'll go from 10-12 kills on a map to 2 or 3 on the next just constantly dying before I can find my feet.

    Very bad maps, I realised the most enjoyable bit of the game for me was when the XP screen came up, not the actual gameplay itself.

    Ok, the game isn't terrible obviously, but I don't think it quite deserves its crown of #1 multiplayer. I'm sure I saw an article or a piece of info a good while back that according to Live data, people were defecting back from COD to Halo 3. I've not done Halo 3, but I do remember the Halo 2 maps being cracking, wonderfully balanced.

    EDIT:

    I'm coming from the perspective of playing Halo 2, co-ordinated attacks and tactics on Assault and CTF. Day Of Defeat with clear front lines, flanking tactics, necessity for a variety of skills, Warhawk can be swung in your favour by thinking clever, being aware of what is happening on the map.

    Whenever I play COD, it just seems like its a straight up deathmatch where all the objectives just add a few new markers on your hud for the deathmatch. The rather bitty and open maps are the fault for this, they just don't seem to be geared for natural tactical play, more like for roaming mavericks.

    I actually enjoy reading the comments thread more than the articles here on Eurogamer. That's not to knock the writers, but I often skip straight to the comments. Gives me plenty of chuckles and snortles.

    On the PS3: The only thing I miss since selling mine is the ability to browse the internet whilst still lying in bed.

    at least in COD if i want to shoot someone in the head i can and if i miss, it's my own fault. not hope that the game has recognized that i have shot them or wrestle with the controls and hope i hear that "plink" that i've killed the other player only to drop down dead myself at the same time.... bad, bad, bad.

    @Widge - Strange you mention Warhawk as being better then COD from a tactical POV. I've found that it only takes 1 or 2 of the opposition spawn camping your base to make the game very unpleasant and one sided. It's very tempting to quit a game when you get into the respawn-die cycle. On the other hand, there's nothing more satisfying then getting a mine kill, 2 or 3 mins after planting them on a jeep or Warhawk.

    Part of the lack of tactics on COD is due to the lack of players with headsets on PS3. Those with headsets just seem to want to make the rest of the group listen to their shitty rap music or whatever else is going on in the trailer park. Flanking the opposition is tough when everyone just spreads out to do their own thing.

I like KZ2, although considering the 2 year old uncharted still batters most things on my 360, I cant wait for uncharted 2 and think that will probably be a console shfter more then KZ2. After all, I bought my first PS3 for uncharted. Just like i got another wii for Madworld today and my 360 for PGR3 at launch. Its usually single games that move consoles but whcih games they are will always be open for debate

    £200, are you lumping case, ram, PSU, CPU, optical drives, HDDs, the works in with that?

    £200 would run Crysis for me, I'd need just a new PSU and graphics card, probably a 4870 to get good performance at 1680res

    Mr. Steinberg, please get a grip on reality. Your two largest exclusives sold way below expectations in US and hardware declined year-on-year last quarter in the US. Super support from multiplatform publishers and a gradual closing of multiplatform titel performance vs. X360 is what keep you afloat through '08 and you know it!

    Dont get me wrong KZ2 is a good game not AAA the controls are a bag of shite. The multiplayer isnt grabbing me by the balls either. I would still rather play COD4 on the 360 with a bunch of mates that all have headsets, comunication is the main aspect of a team based game that PS3 users still are not taking full advantage of.

    The main reason i got my Xbox was for Dead Rising... and version 2 of that is coming to the PS3 as well.

    I dont know why some Xbotters get so hopping mad, the guy didnt say anything bad, he was just pleased with the software line up they have. To be honest considering the lack of big games known about at the moment I would have to agree. I would say we know more about PS3 games that are in development than Xbox.Perhaps MS are holding back for the shows so they can really get a big publicity blitz... just dont know.

    IMHO Last year the PS3 just edged the Xbox on exlusives and caught up (finally) with many games that were finally released later than their Xbox counterparts. The only other game I really wanted to play was Fable (other than DR).. which I will get round to playing at some point.

    This year I would say at the moment there are more game exclusives on the PS3 than I would want on the Xbox (Mass Effect 2 next year, but i can get that for PC). But still the year is long and there are bound to be many surprises yet, but I think Sony with KZ2 has started the stronger.

    Well, it is this guys job to big up Sony so can't blame him for doing his job.

    KZ2 was a great way to start the year and I think Sony were wise to do so that way.

    I don't think that all the Sony 'can only be done on PS3' crap does anything but de-value the brand since everybody knows it's bullshit!

    I am eager to get hold of GoW III and InFamous but otherwise it's just gonna be 3rd party releases that get my attention!

    I bought and enjoyed many PS3 exclusives last year (a few of them underrated gems like Valkyrie Chronicles and Motor Storm 2). By contrast I only got two 360 exclusives, Gears 2 and Fable 2, the latter being the disappointment of the year for me.

    Plenty of PS3 games this year have got me interested while the only 360 one is Alan Wake so far. Still, with most multi plats the 360 will be getting due attention.

    Still yes I would fully agree that Sony is much better at bigging up their games and MS seem too quiet at the moment, keeping cards close to chest can be useful but not if you are causing some of your supporter to ponder if worth owing PS3 afterall!

    I ll just say....remember last year when the forumites were buzzing that 2008 was finally going to be PS3 year, I owned both consoels and I would say the year still went to X360 (Wii but actually but we ll ignore that!) despite LBP and Valkyria Chronciles being a great games and just not backed up by great sales as Sony would have liked.

    I m looking forward to Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Infamous and God of War 3 but like fuck if I m going to miss Mass Effect 2 or even Halo: ODST and Alan Wake if I think worth only having PS3! Nevermind the accepted fact by now that multi plat games will always in great majority plays better on X360.

    Here's my opinion of Killzone 2 and ive played alot of fps's being 30yrs old. It is the best ive ever played, simple as that. I love COD4, COD2, Halo3, Half Life, FarCry etc but nothing has made my jaw drop every time i turn it on and play it, and i mean play it, i play it to death cus' other than the best looking game on a console i've ever seen, it DOES have awesome gameplay too you cock who has never played it.

    Note, that's just my opinion and it means nothing to anyone but me...I play it and love it and no one else's fanboy crap will change that.

    So why not do everyone a favour, especially the statisticians out there who reckon that gamers are likely to die younger and choke on your own self deprecating bile.

    Well, the vast majority of gamers are only interested in the games they can play on the games machines they own, regardless of whether the games will be available elsewhere, or superior on another system. The only gamers who tend to argue they don't need machine X because they can play certain games on machine Y are usually those seeking to score 'fanboy points' online, and hence tend to be those who had no intention of ever purchasing machine X in the first place. ;)

    Anyway.... Scott Steinberg is saying exactly what we would expect him to say, and it's great to see the well earned growing confidence in the PS3 and it's games, however I do feel MS are keeping their lineup very close to their chest, and hence I think the 360 is going to surprise many with some of the games to be announced/released this year and beyond. We'll see.

    Killzone 2 is good and not a turd as Farti tried to portray it as, but man to say its the top example of fps!! I m sorry that taking it a bit too far, as the flaws are quite well trodded out by now, control, forgettable story and respawnings to name a few.

    Killzone 2 is a must buy for PS3 owner as still DO have redeeming merits, it may be just me but I still havent yet got myself to get back to KZ2 to finish the game instead I have played through RE5 twice already and infi ammo 4 guns so far. RE5 is not a better game compared to KZ2 but somehow its more fun and meaningful for me as RE series fan.

    Will pull (literally) myself back to KZ2.....sometimes soon!

    I m toooo used to seeing visually nice game on all platforms and thus KZ2 visually perhaps didnt steamrolled me off my armchair enough as it would have if I only had few games feather to my cap.

    Heck! I dont dispute games look better on PC but also PS3 games will look better on PC (plus edged by X360), this is another debate entirely regarding people preferring to play on PC with monitor and sitting upright or lounged up on the comfy armchair, beer and shocking big HDTV!

    I used to be a BIG PC gamer and I got shamed into stopping buying games on PC when I got piles of unopened PC games and wasted upgrading to uber ninja set up for what? To browse internet, emails, downloadings and work stiuff!

    PS3 get used far more than my PC, so yes you would perhaps have less need to get X360 if you can get them on PC, but still missing out on X360 experience as for me undisputed its the best gaming machine I had the past 3 years.

    Who know what future brings, but I will always largely values the time I spent on X360! However PS3 is gaining a lot in popularity for me.

    Could you point us to a link verifying this? I'm not seeing the same on gamerankings or metacritic, which I'm certain are the sites you're referring to? On gamerankings, the # 10 rated 360 game is rated 92.57, while the # 10 PS3 game is 91.02 (KZ2).

    Not saying I don't believe you, but it's not what I'm seeing and I'd like a little proof.

    Edit: Looking further, nope. 360 has 17 titles rated over 90 and the PS3 has 12. And the 360 has more exclusives over 90 than the PS3 by 6-4. Total bollocks. You probably should have counted on someone actually doing their research. :p

    But even that isn't true as I showed before, soooooo....yeah. I suppose if you want to say that 360 exclusives aren't exclusives because they're on PC as well, but technically they are still 360 exclusives - because they don't appear on any other console. You can say technically they're not, but I can say otherwise and we'd probably both be correct.

    BC became something for early adopters (thanks to people moaning about the price). I've only used it a for 2 games so far. It's a bit painful going back to PS2 games after playing the PS3, but I did miss out on God Of War 1 & 2 thanks to Unreal Tournament (UT99/2k3/2k4) and Counter-Strike: Source so I may pick them up at some point. I still have a perfectly working chipped Slimline PS2 so it's no cheese off my helmet.

    Personally I think people would be better off with 4 USB ports (and possibly the card reader) than BC, but that's just my opinion.

    Also, there are 8 360 exclusives and 7 PS3 from that list?

    Actually, I only see 5, not 8.

    Braid is out on PC this month and I'm not sure if Portal is any different from the PC/PS3 versions. If so then it is 6 for the 360. Everything else is available on PS3 and/or PC.

    £200, are you lumping case, ram, PSU, CPU, optical drives, HDDs, the works in with that?

    £200 would run Crysis for me, I'd need just a new PSU and graphics card, probably a 4870 to get good performance at 1680res

    See, that's not counting a monitor (But they come separately to the PS3 too) or a keyboard and mouse (Which I swiped from my old system) and I can't run without losing framerate in any resolution higher than 1280, but it's still a system that should be able to run a Killzone 2 port fine if there was one.

    Ahhh, so you've been picking and choosing what is and isn't an exclusive as you see fit. If you can get a game on the 360 and not the PS3, or vice versa, that, sir, is an exclusive. Not "what Chess feels is an exclusive." lol

    Anyway, you still need to expand your search because only searching the top 20 isn't much research. The 360's rated-over-90 list of games goes beyond 20 games, while the PS3's does not.

    What are you doing to your consoles, man? I know the 360's hardware is shotty and there have even been questions lately over the PS3's quality, but I can't help think you're doing something wrong.

    I didn't pick and choose, I used the same exclusive ruling for both the PS3 and 360. I think people would agree that an exclusive game is a game which cannot be played on another gaming platform and yes, the PC is a gaming platform a very good one at that (strokes Counter-Strike: Source and UT2004).

    I don't own a 360, yet I do own Left4Dead and I could go out to buy and play Gears of War and/or Mass Effect if I really wanted to. I might even get Alan Wake if it gets finished and is any good, all without owning a 360. Now if you or whoever it was on the other page had stated console exclusives then that's a different matter, but the topic was exclusives and in the top 20, the 360 has less than the PS3. Sure you can look at games with a score of 80 and higher, but you will still find that the PS3 has more EXCLUSIVE games than the 360. It's not a vast amount more, but the PS3 has the higher count.

    Going by your definition of a console exclusive, anyone could call Castlevania: Symphony of The Night a 360 exclusive game, when it was available over 10 years ago on the PS1 & Saturn (1997) and more recently the PSP.

    IGN had a 10ish page article up at the end of 2008 looking at exclusives games released that year across the PS3, 360 & Wii. They concluded that the PS3 had more higher scoring exclusives than the 360, with the Wii coming 3rd. Even Gametrailers said the same thing http:// www.gametrailers.com/player/43916.html.
