Actually, I guess it pretty aptly describes the marriage of styles that's happening: The Happy-Pretend-Land Blue-Skies of Sega and the fantasy nerdery of a Bioware RPG.

It was genuinely good RPG material: Started off just as Sonic fighting vs robots made by Robotnik, who then found Tails and went to on the Floating Island and teamed up with Knuckles after finding out the Dr. had tricked them both. Then there's Amy (complete with crossbow) and later the squirrel in indestructable armour (whos name escapes me). Other main enemies included Brutus (robot solider), Metalix (seen briefly in Sonic 2) and Super-Sonic (a Sephiroth-esque psycopath).
Oh, to be eight again....

Yeah, they should never have turned him into a mario style franchise. I was looking at the pics feeling strangely unmoved despite the involvement of sonic AND bioware, and I think you might have hit on why. I will continue to follow this with mild interest though.
