SOE working on new PlanetSide
Player survey reveals MMOFPS sequel.
An email sent out to PlanetSide subscribers by Sony Online Entertainment suggests that a sequel to the cult massively multiplayer shooter is in the works.
The email, titled "Help Us Design the Next PlanetSide Game", said: "We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design." It invited readers to take part in a survey.
"The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter," it said, but assured fans of the original that it wouldn't be discontinued. "Don't worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn't going anywhere."
Fansite PlanetSide Universe also discovered that SOE had registered the domain name www.planetside2.com, which redirects to the PlanetSide website – and obtained this comment from SOE chief John Smedley: "Planetside fans will be happy. We have big things planned in the next 12 months. We're working on something new that's really cool."
Smedley also mentioned that a patch for the original game in the works, bringing full Vista compliance among other things.

That kinda describes all SOE MMOs ...
Seriously, misgivings about their dire management of certain MMOs aside, good on SOE for doing this - I'm craving an FPS MMO done right. Even if the greatest problem of the concept (Latency) is not technologically ready yet, it's great to see an attempt being made.

No kidding.
SOE are useless. To the point it appears, incapable of designing their own game.
Never invite a community to design a game. Judging by open betas, the community can't even test games.
I have fond memories of Planetside but stopped when they screwed with it too much. Have they really only now got it to run on vista?? rofl...

Yup - Planetside, pre Core Combat, with a new engine, will do fine. I will happily buy a new PC for this game (as has been the case since about 2005). Or a PS3. Or both, just get it right Sony, or I will park a Galaxy dropship on your collective heads.

YES. Now don't fuck it up by being horrendously overcomplicated and adding unneeded game modes like last time. Overground, different elevations, nice scenery, balanced weapons, shitloads of customisation and SQUAD based AWESOME.
If they can keep it simple and come up with compelling reasons to prevent people from simply zerging everywhere then I'll love it.
Planetside was the first game where I encountered the zerg (well, outside of Starcraft

I loved Planetside... but then they had to screw it up with their expansions and stuff.
Still I cant wait to drive the skygaurd once again! Had such a blast in that game driving buggies and tanks

Us PS vets have been wondering for years why no one's been putting any effort into another MMOFPS.

Yeah, he was banned for hax0rz though: wall hacks, water-walking, exploiting item duplication bugs for loaves and fishes that sort of thing.
The worst were his health and resurrection exploits: 3 seconds after you took him out he'd respawn.
