Ouch.

You kind of wonder sometimes why publishers, if not prepared to spend enough money to make a proper job of things, are prepared to spend any money at all. False economies are rife in games development :(

eurogamer takes aim, spots smash court through its sniper scope, and BAM, one shot, one kill, and the bloody carcass is twitching on the ground.

Goodnight

A shame - the original classic Namco Smash Court Tennis on PSOne was bloody awesome.

Oh, and spelling error - herd, not heard. ;o)

Reading this it sounds a lot like Smash Court 2 as I played it on the PS2 and if you wanted to play the match without the "quest system", and you do, there was an option to do so in the menu. Although hiding such an option in the menu could be considered a, really, poor design option, it was there and it told you so in the game manual.

Anything like that on SCT3 perhaps?

Also, hitting the ball took some getting used to because, as I remember it, you didn't press any button to start the swing, as in pretty much any other tennis game out there. Instead the backswing begins automatically and what you had to do was to time the racquet hit the ball.

Once I had gotten used to that SCT2 provided me with one of the better tennis games on the PS2, just got a bit curious if it might be the same for SCT3 seeing that this review reads a lot like the ones that didn't get it for the PS2 did.

Edit: Interestingly enough I just noticed that EG's reviewer was one of those that didn't read the manual on the "RPG-tournaments" last time around as well. So now I'm really curious, does it play like the PS2 version did?

Is it me, or the shadow in the first screenshot has nothing to do with the player?

@Kristan: Ignatius_Cheese and I were debating whether to send you a Castle Crashers invite yesterday, but we saw you were playing this and assumed you were doing a review... looks like we should have sent it anyway and rescued you!

Hey! That's genuinely what happened :P

And please, it's 'asphaltcowboy', none of this underscore and capital letter business!

I wish they would stop tarnishing the good name of SCT with these shit 'serious' tennis titles. Namco SCT and Anna K's SCT were both ace. More little people you can hit in the balls please.

Eurgh! So glad I cancelled my pre-order for the 360 version a month ago... I realised that already owning Virtua Tennis 3, Top Spin 3 and SEGA Superstars Tennis, I really didn't need ANOTHER tennis game... one that is apparently the worst of the lot! LOL

shame on you for this poor review!. I bought the game and I kind of agreed with some of your points at first. but an hour into the game and its absolutely brilliant especially online. I have Tops pin 3 and Virtua tennis 3 and I think this is better
