Smash Bros. user content to stop News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

5 June, 2009

Nintendo will stop accepting user-generated content for Super Smash Bros. Brawl from 30th June.

"As of June 30th, 2009, the current service that accepts user-generated snapshots, stage designs, and replay data will no longer be available. Please note, however, that we will continue to distribute such data after that date," notes the official website, pointed out by Kotaku.

There's no reason given for the decision.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out here last March and is fantastic, as our review points out.

Idiots. Why? How hard can it be to support the game for a few years?

Just goes to show how useless Nintendo is with online functions.

Pretty sure it was June. March was the US release.

They must have tons of replays, screenshots and levels.

They're still sending out stuff daily.

Whether they have enough data to send out unique content every day remains to be seen, however. Once they do to stop or repeat content you can come back here and complain.

I didn't even know such a feature existed.

So users submit replays and maps, and the 'best' are redistributed via a channel ?

You're spot on with that. Pretty lame to discontinue this after barely a year, unless they're just switching it off to clear their backlog.

@ Smelly

I'd rather be charged a montly fee than have a free Nintendo like "service".

I bloody would. Under £1 a week for integrated voice chat, people with names that work across games and party systems? Yes please.

hm sony offers that for free, but something tells me you'd still prefer to pay a subscription fee, than buy another company's console

1) PSN doesn't match Live yet.
2) Not at all. I'd rather have the money to buy all of them, but I don't. Why you felt the need to construe fanboy rubbish out of my comment that Nintendo's service sucks in comparison to others, even if they charge, is more to the point (but just as dull)

This is still the last 'hardcore' first-party Wii release I can remember, so the fact that this functionality is being dropped after just a year, and before any other 'hardcore' games have been able to follow it up, seems pretty poor...

That's way too soon, when I bought the game I didn't expect this. Generally, I wish Nintendo would focus on online gaming more, and learn a bit from Sony/Microsoft in this area.

Still, until Powerstone 3 is announced Smash Bros will continue to be my favourite party fighter :-)

This is probly because not long after TMNT Smash 'em Up is out - Whichin itself IS Brawl 2 just with Turtles itstead. Nintendo probly are being cheap and using the same data servers for that instead

Most likely they have had a bazillion things submitted to them and can keep distributing until the end of the universe.
I guess they don't see the point of anymore for a while since they're really just distributing a level per day.

Only problem is I would expect the more worthwhile levels to be the ones developed in a few months, not the ones people mashed together at launch.
