SmackDown demo on Live News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

15 October, 2007

THQ has oiled up a new demo for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 and slipped it onto Xbox Live.

It lets you hop into the Lycra hot pants of Rey Mysterio, Bobby Lashley, Undertaker and Randy Orton, and stamp your feet as you punch each other in single- or two-player head-to-head exhibition matches.

Hopefully it will also give you a good idea of what has changed this year, including the new Superstar Fighting Styles and Struggle Submission System.

We got to twiddle our thumbs on it back in August, and were impressed with what appeared to be one of the strongest iterations in the series to date. The challenge, we said, would be replicating it across all of the platforms.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 is due out for PS3, PS2, Xbox 360, Wii and DS on 9th November. The PSP version will follow on 23rd November.

Have they ever re-written the engine from the original PS1 Smackdown game years ago? The last 5 versions have looked more or less identical to my eyes, just higher poly counts but the over-all look seems to dark in contrast to the neon gloss of TV wrestling.

I'm interested to see if there's any noticable change to last year's highly disappointing 360 version. It just seems so limited compared to how it could be if JAKKS bothered using the 360's power properly.

Oh and thanks for plugging my group at the bottom there :-D

This is going to be shit isn't it. Yukes need this license taken off them cus they are doing nowt with it.

Last year's 360 version was crap.

Rubbish royal rumble, maximum of six guys in ring at a time, terrible tag team matches, can't be bothered going on because there was so much wrong with it.

On a related note, have people been keeping up with Midway's work on the TNA Impact! title. Just head over to Gamespot, as it's looking quite promising.

Clever idea by head execs at Sony, they thought that if they released duplicate versions of games it would make their software catalogue seem less barren...and then they proceeded to listen to the Benny Hill theme tune and rejoice at their 'brilliance'...

Then Ken got the sack lol

Yeah, it's still shit.

Glitchy, slow and utterly tiresome to play.

Go for TNA impact instead.

The demo was only for US marketplace it seems as myself and a couple of others already said. EG were obviously just too lazy to check the source matter when posting this one up. I'll happily admit I am wrong, but all the stories I have read related to this demo have been some guy from Yukes/THQ saying how the demo is available for the North American market. No mention at all of us.

Might pick up the DS version if it turns out to be solid. I can see myself playing this in short bursts. If they can nail the touchscreen controls it could turn out to be a fun title.

As long as you've got a correct zipcode and state, you can use whatever adress you want.

Example:

I dont think the smackdown demo is there even on the US marketplace yet (although I woulndt mind my hands on the eternal sonata demo from there).

I do believe this iteration of smacdown is gonna be just as shit as the last one, but then again, being a wrestling whore I am.. :D.

Cant wait for TNA!

I thought last year's WWE SmackDown game was really good on the 360, only marred by all the loading screens and a few other gripes. Graphically it was spot on, the animation was mostly OK but more importantly it played fine albeit the game is still hampered by a slightly clunky feel and some dodgy collision detection/clipping issues. Even if this year's game is only a slight improvement I'll still enjoy it so I've pre-ordered it already. I'd still like to try the demo though... whenever it's out!!!

apparently you cant use the old style control scheme on this demo, which sucks cos I didnt get along with the new control scheme introduced in the last one.

Smackdown 2007 was wayyy to easy, and the animations were generic and the commentary was awful. Not to mention the pathetic collision detection (like Taker grabbing the air instead of Rey Mysterios throat for a chokeslam).

bloody awful.

I really used to enjoy hese games, getting some mates together and battling it out in a rumble with 32 bizarre created characters was ace.

But it just hasnt moved on since then. The controls etc have changed but it just plays exactly the same as it always has.

In this day and age, thats just not acceptable.
