SKATE Reader Review

Reader Review by Matty10209

5 November, 2007

I can say with severe confidence and over 10 years of gaming experiance that this game is a ten. Revolutionary for skateboarding games and yet still fun to play is quite an achievement. They have pulled this off so perfectly what with all vast majority of actual sponsors and their merchandise, its hard not to give it a 10, and i never give 10s...

The controls, camera angles and feel of the game reinvent the skateboarding genre, so much so that you never look at tony hawks in the same way again. However, i will say that i actually skate in real life, so i appreciate every last bit of skating detail present in the game such as Flat spots, slowing down on turns in mid-air and so do all my friends.

I cant say for sure that someone generally not interested in skating at all is going to love it when they play this game as i don't know anyone who doesn't like skating. I think this is important as i think Smackdown vs Raw 2007 is wank because i don't watch wrestling; yet someone who does will be able to gasp at all the moves available from the show and at the entrances (i know someone like this) its that sense of familiarity and maybe thats why i gave this game a ten.

To conclude i was starting to feel gaming wash up with sequel after sequel with the same overused gameplay mechanics such as FPS and was overjoyed to see a game so different come across. If your a fan of skating, or even if you've ever wondered what it was like to skate, you need to buy this fresh game complete with slick visuals, unique gameplay and awesome camera angles. I'm off to go skate...and then play skate

Its ok, its not a ten, but its ok... The really bad camera? The awful voice acting? The poor character customization? (about 8 hair styles... & you can only make male characters) The repetitive pedestrians and cars? The Loading Times? The frankly ridiculous way that you progress?

I would prob give it a high 7. I enjoyed playing it, especially the free skate online, and it is genuinely a pretty fun game, but lets not get carried away.

@bengray66: I haven't played this game, so naturally you should all bow to my superior intellect and unmatched powers of logical analysis. The things you mention including poor customization, voice acting, repetitive graphics, should not bother too much if the gameplay is good.

On the other hand, the camera, loading times, and progression are points of concern.

So it's an 8 then! ;-)

I think this game is particularly well received by the critics because everyone expects EA to jump late into a genre and turn out a bland copycat. In this case this was not true.

i absolutely love it. it's a flawed masterpiece. i could never give it a 10 simply because there is so much that could be improved upon, in terms of presentation. the gameplay setup seems rushed and unfinished, the various modes are less than perfect and somewhat unimaginative and the customisation is particularly poor, but the core gameplay mechanic is sooooo spot on, it more than makes up for any of the game's shortcomings. i also think it's utterly beautiful. as for the camera, i have no issues with it what so ever. it always looks at your feet and their position on the board, which is the most important thing. okay sometimes your body obscures the odd bit of street furniture but skate wouldn't be the same game with a different camera. my verdict would be a ... hmmm... 8?... 9?.... 10?.... 9... i thin... yes a 9

if you skate its a 9.95, they are missing a few tricks and there can be annoying loading pauses. The camera is a non-issue actually because it mimics real-life skating, its supposed to be a filmer following you and it works wonderfully.

The option to change would be nice for those who don't understand it tho i suppose. But it is without a doubt my GOTY i have been playing it solidlt since release day and cannot see my self getting bored anytime soon. A masterpiece...

Who cares about character customisation anyway? In my opinion they should have left it out completely as it's only icing. What is important in Skate is the dynamics of riding a skateboard and they have nailed it 100%.

I hated the camera originally but now I love it, it adds that element of difficulty due to randomness that the world has.
