Skate 2 Hands On

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Hands On by Christian Donlan

Turning weaknesses into strengths is an appealingly simple approach to take with sequels. The main reason more developers don't try it is pretty simple as well: it's very hard. Much easier, then, to simply ignore the cracks that are forming, paper over them and let the problem quietly spread around the entire structure until, one day, several years down the line, it undermines the whole enterprise and you're left with a pretty mound of toxic rubble.

But EA Black Box hasn't done that. The developers of last year's Skate actually managed to take one of the very few things that annoyed players in the original game and spin it into something fun. "We discovered the control scheme could be confusing, and people fell down a lot," admits producer Jason DeLong. "We decided to reward that."

The team's solution is to turn falling down into one facet of the challenge: fling your skater off the top of a bridge, or a building, or down the side of a mountain, and see how much damage you can do to them. Once they're falling, you can explosively launch them off their boards, and make them strike any of a number of inappropriate poses, from a cannonball curl to a flailing spread eagle, in order to maximise the bone-shattering and face-grinding that ensues. Welcome to the Hall of Meat mode: it's gravity, only fun.

It's a mini-game that may be familiar from elsewhere: both PAIN and Amped 3 got a lot of mileage from variations on the same mechanic (and its inclusion in Skate 2 probably means that a large proportion of players will still be doing a lot of falling down in the main game, incidentally) but you can't really begrudge a little strategic theft when the implementation is this good: collisions are jarring and amusingly horrific, and the game presents you with a heavy chunk of stats post-splat, including bones broken and medical costs accrued alongside the distance fallen and speed of impact. Even the simple act of ejecting from the board brings back all the right memories of Monkey Target, with its emphasis on timing and its delight in experimentation.

Character damage may be persistent in the final version, so you may end up with a lamppost sticking out of your stomach for most of the game.

So that's how I came to spend the best part of twenty minutes at a recent EA press event throwing fashionably-trousered counter-culture types off a bridge, delineating the minute variations in the way they'd smash against objects on their way down. It's good, old fashioned, stupid fun.

But if it suggests a more Johnny Knoxville approach to the wider game, however, that's not the case - the bodies piling up at the bottom of the canyon are about as endearingly moronic as Skate 2 gets. This is not unexpected: despite the slacker soundtrack and regular incidences of heads hitting poles, the original Skate was defined by an air of self-effacing competence. This was the game that quietly set about revolutionising a skating genre which had gimmicked itself into a tired, confusing anticlimax, and it's the same game that then quietly went on to clean up in the shops, sending Tony Hawk (and possibly even Tony Hawks, too) into a crisis of confidence resulting in a rare year off.

Then there's the "grab the world" button. By squeezing R1 (or RB on a 360 - the demo was running on a PS3), you can reach out and grasp onto the environment at any point. For tricking, it has obvious benefits: you can now perform extremely satisfying handplants at the top of a ramp, for example, but besides adding another layer to your moves, it opens up much wider possibilities.

I like.

In my mind the who point of Skate was a really back to basic's skateboarding game.

All the skaters i know love it because its the first game to feel like skating since Thrasher:skate or die on the playstation.

I suppose it should have been expected really. Have a great idea for a game and then as soon as you move on to the sequel start heading down market as quickly as possibly.

Here's to Skate3: Xtreme

@ Monsta

Overreaction much?

Okay the bail mode sounds stupid, but everything else is a welcome and sensible addition.
There is no lame extreme and underground story, they've added in most of the tricks that were (noticeably) missing from the first game. They've created a new city, apparently removed the annoying loading when returning to a session marker. Doesn't sound down market to me, sounds like they've changed all the things they needed to while retaining the feel of the game.

Sounds good fun. Skate/Tony Hawk + PAIN.

Love how you have stuck this in the 360 preview section but, "Then there's the "grab the world" button. By squeezing R1 (or RB on a 360 - the demo was running on a PS3)" EG staying true to their cause ;)

I think that will be harder to fix, since it deliberately emulated those fish eye skate videos.

But, yeah, I didnt really like it and found the character obscured far too much of the screen.

liked the first one.. lots

apart from Black Rob's challenge where you had to do a 360 flip on a bench while a big boy walked round it...there was nothing hard about it apart from the trick only came off the analouge once every 75 times

As long as it's as difficult and frustrating as the first one then I'll be happy.

It was also the entire basis for the game 'Crusty Demons'. But no-one ever played that so it's ok.

I was worried for a moment that this was now the basis of the whole game, but as a mini-game it should be a fun diversion, this sounds good.

I think the camera view was part of the point. Perhaps an alternate view would be nice, but the camera was a revolution I thought.

@Monsta

did you read the preview?!

anyway... i loved skate but in these days of havok behaveour and euphoria, bailing really sucked. it was like you just died or froze up or something as soon as you came off the board... the new stuff looks great in videos, bailing before you really hurt yourself.

@Quine

yes... at least one of the vids doing the rounds seems to suggest so.

Another quality "Hands On" Christian, many thanks :)

Did you see the 360 version at all? Are they looking to touch the graphics at all or leaving them alone completely?

does the PS3 version have the shame shoddy framerate of the original? It was shockingly bad when you span the view around unlike the much smoother 360 version.

I loved skate and i'm sure i'll love the new one. I'm just worried if the focus becomes throwing yourself down a mountain and down hill racing (the comparison to ssx was what really scared me) the it will loose what was most appealing about the original.

I didn't have an issue with falling a lot. When your skating you fall down. Repeatedly.

Skating is very difficult. Why should games make it so much easier.

Nope- this time Black Box is using PS3 as the lead platform (hence why this hands on is using PS3 instead of 360).

I know they probably aren't going to but including longboards for the downhill races would make my day.

Absolutely loved the first game even if some of the later video challenges were tedious to the extreme. They went from fairly challenging to vertical wall of fury.
